A Patient with Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma Presenting with Spastic Paraplegia as the Initial Symptom

In this report, we describe the case of a patient with splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) who presented with spastic paraplegia as the initial symptom. A 42-year-old male developed progressive spastic paraplegia over 4 months. His neurologic examination revealed paraplegia with pyramidal syndrome, hypoesthesia below the T1 level, and anal hypotonia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spinal cord revealed an extensive high-intensity signal in T2-weighted sequences and swelling involving the thoracic region and conus medullaris. A laboratory test revealed presence of the serum M component. Abdominal computed tomography images showed moderate splenomegaly. Abnormal lymphocytes of B-cell lineage markers (CD19+, CD20+, and CD25+; surface immunoglobulin κ expression; IgD+ and IgM+) were found in the peripheral blood, cerebrospinal fluid, bone marrow and spleen. Splenectomy confirmed the SMZL diagnosis. After the completion of chemotherapy, the patient was in complete remission, and spinal MRI findings were normal. Intramedullary spinal cord involvement in SMZL is extremely rare, and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of SMZL with intramedullary spinal cord involvement associated with clinical and radiologic signs without the involvement of cerebral structures. Spastic paraplegia can be the initial presentation of SMZL

Predictors and correlates of self-esteem in deaf athletes

The aims of this study were to examine the association between different aspects of self-esteem and level of sport competition and to assess the associations between self-esteem and age, length of participation in sport, and number of dramatic sport experiences in deaf athletes. One hundred and twelve congenitally deaf Japanese athletes completed the Self-Positiveness Scale (SPS) and the Inventory of Dramatic Experience for Sport (IDES). A correlational analysis demonstrated moderate to weak relationships between all of the SPS subscales except self-acceptance and public self-consciousness. One-way ANOVAs revealed that international athletes had fewer negative relationships with others and more dramatic sport experiences. Multiple regression analysis indicated that dramatic sport experiences significantly predicted self-acceptance, self-achievement, life satisfaction, negative relationships with others, and self-disclosure. Thus, dramatic sport experiences can enhance some aspects of self-esteem

Reversed halo sign in pneumocystis pneumonia: a case report

Abstract

Background

The reversed halo sign may sometimes be seen in patients with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, but is rarely associated with other diseases.

Case presentation

We present a case study of a 32-year-old male patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, who had previously been treated with chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A chest X-ray showed bilateral patchy infiltrates. High-resolution computed tomography revealed the reversed halo sign in both upper lobes. The patient was diagnosed with pneumocystis pneumonia, which was successfully treated with sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim; the reversed halo sign disappeared, leaving cystic lesions. Cases such as this one are rare, but show that the reversed halo sign may occur in patients who do not have cryptogenic organizing pneumonia.

Conclusion

Physicians can avoid making an incorrect diagnosis and prescribing the wrong treatment by carefully evaluating all clinical criteria rather than assuming that the reversed halo sign only occurs with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia.</p

The Japanese space gravitational wave antenna; DECIGO

DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the future Japanese space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to open a new window of observation for gravitational wave astronomy especially between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz, revealing various mysteries of the universe such as dark energy, formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and inflation of the universe. The pre-conceptual design of DECIGO consists of three drag-free spacecraft, whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry– Perot Michelson interferometer. We plan to launch two missions, DECIGO pathfinder and pre- DECIGO first and finally DECIGO in 2024

DECIGO pathfinder (DPF) is a milestone satellite mission for DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) which is a future space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to provide us fruitful insights into the universe, in particular about dark energy, a formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and the inflation of the universe. Since DECIGO will be an extremely large mission which will formed by three drag-free spacecraft with 1000m separation, it is significant to gain the technical feasibility of DECIGO before its planned launch in 2024. Thus, we are planning to launch two milestone missions: DPF and pre-DECIGO. The conceptual design and current status of the first milestone mission, DPF, are reviewed in this article

DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) is the planned Japanese space gravitational wave antenna, aiming to detect gravitational waves from astrophysically and cosmologically significant sources mainly between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz and thus to open a new window for gravitational wave astronomy and for the universe. DECIGO will consists of three drag-free spacecraft arranged in an equilateral triangle with 1000 km arm lengths whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry-Perot interferometer, and four units of triangular Fabry-Perot interferometers are arranged on heliocentric orbit around the sun. DECIGO is vary ambitious mission, we plan to launch DECIGO in era of 2030s after precursor satellite mission, B-DECIGO. B-DECIGO is essentially smaller version of DECIGO: B-DECIGO consists of three spacecraft arranged in an triangle with 100 km arm lengths orbiting 2000 km above the surface of the earth. It is hoped that the launch date will be late 2020s for the present

Partial Purification and Demonstration of Anti-tumor Activity of High Molecular Weight DNA-binding Protein (HMDBP) in Ascitic Fluid of Mice with Meth-A Ascites Fibrosarcoma

この論文は国立情報学研究所の学術雑誌公開支援事業により電子化されました。A high molecular weight DNA-binding protein (HMDBP), from the ascitic fluid of mice with Meth-A ascites, was partially purified with isoelectric focusing column chromatography. The HMDBP was shown to be acidic in isoelectrophoresis. It did not cross-react with IgA, IgM and IgG. The major HMDBP was determined, by sodium dodecylsulfate gel electrophoresis, to be about 160, 000 daltons. In tumor cell cultures, HMDBP suppressed the growth of tumor cells. Therefore, this high molecular weight DNA-binding β-globulin may play a role in controlling tumor growth
