    Postoperative complications of Okabayashi's operation for carcinoma of the cervix in recent 5 years

    Okabayashi's radical extensive hysterectomy is one of the excellent operations for carcinoma of the cervix. In this study on the postoperative complications during the recent 5 years, we obtained the following results. 1. In the total of 861 cases studied, the primary mortality amounts to 1.2 per cent, the incidence of the uretero-vaginal fistula 2.7 per cent, the pelvic abscess 16.8 per cent, and the lymphocyst 23.3 per cent. 2. On comparing the results with our previous ones as well as those of other investigators, it is found that satisfactory results have been obtained due to the advent of various antibiotics in recent years and also due to a marked advance made in the technics of blood and fluid administration as well as anesthesia. 3. Since the various complications have not completely been overcome and they still pose an important problem, an effort should be made toward a better postoperative care in order to prevent the complications.</p

    Preparation of Ba1-xLnxFeO3-δ and BaFe1-xLnxO3-δ (Ln: trivalent ion) with cubic perovskite structure and random distribution of oxide ion vacancy

    Oxides with perovskite structure and random arrangement of oxide ion, such as Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe0.2Co0.8O3-δ, attract much interest as oxygen permeation material. For wide spread of oxygen permeation devices, development of new material without Co is highly desired because of high cost of Co. Recently, we reported that arrangement of oxide ion vacancy in monoclinic BaFeO2.5-δ changes from ordered to random by partial La3+ substitution for Ba2+ site, resulting in cubic perovskite structure and improvement of electrical conductivity [1, 2]. Fujishiro reported preparation of BaFe1-xInxO3-δ with cubic perovskite structure and enhancement of electrical conductivity with In substitution [3]. It is expected that material with higher property may be developed by substitution of other trivalent ion, such as lanthanoid or Y, for Ba- or Fe- site in BaFeO2.5-δ. In this work, preparation of various Ba1-xLnxFeO3-δ and BaFe1-xLnxO3-δ (Ln: trivalent ion) was examined and factors determining substitution site and crystal structure were investigated. The samples of Ba1-xLnxFeO3-δ and BaFe1-xLnxO3-δ were prepared with Pechini method. Each solution of Ba2+, Ln3+ and Fe3+ was mixed with nominal cation composition. After addition of citric acid and ethylene glycol, the solution was heated at about 450 ºC, resulting in precursor. The precursor was calcined at 700 ºC for 24 h in air, followed by 1300 ºC for 10 h in air twice. The crystal structure and lattice constants of the specimens were investigated with X-ray diffraction. The chemical state of Fe and oxygen content of the specimens were evaluated with iodometric titration. Please click Additional Files below to see the full abstract

    HIP AND LUMBOSACRAL JOINT CENTRE LOCATIONS IN ASIAN POPULATION: BIASES BY EXISTING REGRESSIONS AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW METHODS

    Accurate prediction of the lumbosacral and hip joint centres (LSJC, HJC) is crucial for the analysis of lumbo-pelvic-hip dynamics in various movements. Here we show that pre-existing regressions proposed by European research groups produce biased estimates of the LSJC and HJC in Japanese males and females (n = 23, 24), and that the biases in LSJC depend on sex. When compared to locations directly measured by MRI, the pre-existing regressions estimated the LSJC to be more posterior in males and more inferior and posterior in females, and the HJC to be more medial for both sexes. We suggest the importance of considering racial and sexual differences in morphology. We propose new regressions for Asians and validate them using leave-one-out cross-validation. Our regression can be a powerful solution for accurate motion analysis in Asians

    Abscisic acid induces ectopic outgrowth in epidermal cells through cortical microtubule reorganization in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Abscisic acid (ABA) regulates seed maturation, germination and various stress responses in plants. The roles of ABA in cellular growth and morphogenesis, however, remain to be explored. Here, we report that ABA induces the ectopic outgrowth of epidermal cells in Arabidopsis thaliana. Seedlings of A. thaliana germinated and grown in the presence of ABA developed ectopic protrusions in the epidermal cells of hypocotyls, petioles and cotyledons. One protrusion was formed in the middle of each epidermal cell. In the hypocotyl epidermis, two types of cell files are arranged alternately into non-stoma cell files and stoma cell files, ectopic protrusions being restricted to the non-stoma cell files. This suggests the presence of a difference in the degree of sensitivity to ABA or in the capacity of cells to form protrusions between the two cell files. The ectopic outgrowth was suppressed in ABA insensitive mutants, whereas it was enhanced in ABA hypersensitive mutants. Interestingly, ABA-induced ectopic outgrowth was also suppressed in mutants in which microtubule organization was compromised. Furthermore, cortical microtubules were disorganized and depolymerized by the ABA treatment. These results suggest that ABA signaling induces ectopic outgrowth in epidermal cells through microtubule reorganization

     Plant cortical microtubules align perpendicular to the growth axis to determine the direction of cell growth. However, it remains unclear how plant cells form well-organized cortical microtubule arrays in the absence of a centrosome. In this study, we investigated the functions of Arabidopsis NIMA-related kinase 6 (NEK6), which regulates microtubule organization during anisotropic cell expansion. Quantitative analysis of hypocotyl cell growth in the nek6-1 mutant demonstrated that NEK6 suppresses ectopic outgrowth and promotes cell elongation in different regions of the hypocotyl. Loss of NEK6 function led to excessive microtubule waving and distortion, implying that NEK6 suppresses the aberrant cortical microtubules. Live cell imaging showed that NEK6 localizes to the microtubule lattice and to the shrinking plus and minus ends of microtubules. In agreement with this observation, the induced overexpression of NEK6 reduced and disorganized cortical microtubules and suppressed cell elongation. Furthermore, we identified five phosphorylation sites in β-tubulin that serve as substrates for NEK6 in vitro. Alanine substitution of the phosphorylation site Thr166 promoted incorporation of mutant β-tubulin into microtubules. Taken together, these results suggest that NEK6 promotes directional cell growth through phosphorylation of β-tubulin and the resulting destabilization of cortical microtubules
