Self-directed learning (SDL) is becoming a prominent issue discussed in the workplace learning topic. Each of the employees needs to be aware that organizations need people who do not only believe the importance of learning but they must have initiative and capability to learn effectively. This study aims to examine the antecedent factor of the emergence of SDL in the workplace. This study using qualitative research design, particularly case study approach conducted in a prominent motorcycle-manufacturing company in Indonesia that intentionally set the organizational direction toward a learning organization. A total of thirty staff and managers were purposively selected and interviewed using a semi-structured approach. The Data gathered were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Findings indicate three factors as the antecedent to the emergence of SDL in the workplace, namely : personal factors, organizational factors, and family support. Discussion and recommendations based on research findings will be explained later

This study aims to provide evidence on how work-related self-directed learning (WRSDL) practices among staffs and managers from various job fields proof as basis towards cultivation of the Five Disciplines of Learning Organization by Senge. This qualitative study was conducted in a prominent motorcycle-manufacturing company in Indonesia that intentionally set the organizational direction toward a learning organization. In this organization, improvement and innovation have always been the central issues and become a way of life ingrained among employees. A total of thirty staffs and managers who were prominent as self-directed learners were purposively interviewed using semi-structured interview technique. These participants were selected in order to get their experience in carrying out learning in the workplace context. The data gathered were analyzed using content analysis approach. This study provides evidences that cultivating WRSDL will strengthen the implementation of the five disciplines of learning organization. This study contributes insight of the importance of WRSDL to the body of knowledge, and suggested recommendation to practitioner as well as for future research which will be explained later

Examining knowledge transfer using SECI model as lenses : A study of interaction among local Malaysian entrepreneurs and Indonesian cross-border entreprenuers in cross-border Serikin weekend market

Little attention has been given to the study on the impact of local Bidayuh entrepreneurs in Serikin weekend market despite the tremendous presence of cross-border Indonesian entrepreneurs. The objective of this study is to examine the knowledge transfer that may have happened between the entrepreneurs between two countries during their interaction every weekend by using SECI Model as lenses. Qualitative phenomenological study was conducted to answer the research questions. A total of thirty local/Bidayuh entrepreneurs were purposively selected to participate in this study in order to get rich data. Participants were interviewed using semi-structured interview questions and the data were analyzed using content analysis approach. This study concluded that the presence of Indonesian-cross border entrepreneur helps to improve the economy of the villagers, open the opportunities for business partner, provide role model in doing business, and bring revenue to the government. However, although the business-activities in Serikin market have been going on for decades, the transfer of knowledge among fellow entrepreneurs (between Indonesian cross-border entrepreneurs and Bidayuh-entrepreneurs) is still very minimal. This is due to the very limited time and space for them to have interaction. Recommendations to improve this situation are provided at the end of this paper

The purpose of this study is to develop the “Research Methodology Toolkit” which enable to assist for front-line staff that enables them to learn about an issue and identify approaches for addressing them. Toolkits can help translate theory into practice, and typically target one issue or one audience. A toolkit is a become tool importance for lecturers or instructors to engage and interact with students in class. In this study, the “Research Methodology Toolkit” is a toolkit for supporting lecturers in teaching research methodology to students whether in class or research supervision. There is a Quantitative research design. This study is consisted two (2) phases of development. First phase is “Content Development” and second is “Toolkit Development”. Aims of this study are (i) identify the gaps in comprehension which affect the conduct of small-scale research projects among the final year students; (ii) develop a research methodology toolkit for students and lecturers; and (iii) examining the effectiveness of the research methodology toolkit. For the First phase, researcher come out the toolkit content using Inquiry based learning and Gamification approach in process of executing the questions to students. Then, the Second phase development comprises the keyword cards, keyword manual of answers, leader board, score board, game based, games regulations and role of game master. In answering the first research objective study found students has difficulties to understand the concept and application of research methodology as well as lecturers/supervisors also have issue in explaining the research methodology concept as well as application to students/supervisees. Then, the second objective is development of toolkit which consisted seven (7) components which are the keyword cards, answers booklet, leader board, score board, game based, games regulations and role of game master. Hence, in examining the effectiveness of the “Research Methodology Toolkit” the first usability stated 94% participants mentioned they are satisfied with interface and content of the toolkit and the second usability test is described majority of participants understand on the keyword questions. Practical implication showed the “Research Methodology Toolkit” is enabled to increase the engagement and interaction between lecturers and students in class as well as supervisor and supervisees in supervision process. Future researcher is advised to expand this research to the postgraduate students

Reducing intrinsic cognitive load in percentage change problems: The equation approach

    No full text
We compared the equation approach and unitary approach in helping students (n = 59) learn percentage change problems from a cognitive load perspective. The equation approach emphasized a two-part learning process. Part 1 revised prior knowledge of percentage quantity; Part 2 integrated the percentage quantity and the original amount in an equation for solution. Central to the unitary approach is the concept of unit percentage (1%). The unitary approach would expect to incur high element interactivity because of the intrinsic nature of its solution steps, and the need to search and integrate quantity and percentage in order to act as a point of reference for calculating the unit percentage. Test results and the instructional efficiency measure favored the equation approach. It was suggested that the equation approach reduced the intrinsic cognitive load associated with percentage change problems via sequencing and prior knowledge
