On the smoothness of static multi-black hole solutions of higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory
Previous work has shown that static multi-black hole solutions of
higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory do not possess smooth horizons. We
show that the lack of smoothness is worse than previously demonstrated. We
consider solutions describing multiple black holes on a common axis. In five
dimensions, the metric is generically twice, but not three times, continuously
differentiable at the horizon. The Maxwell field is generically continuous, but
not differentiable, at the horizon. In more than five dimensions, the metric is
once, but not twice, continuously differentiable, and there is a
parallely-propagated curvature singularity at the horizon. The Maxwell field
strength is again continuous, but not differentiable, at the horizon.Comment: 19 pages; minor correction

Design and experimental evaluation of a swept supercritical Laminar Flow Control (LFC) airfoil
A large chord swept supercritical laminar flow control (LFC) airfoil was designed, constructed, and tested in the NASA Langley 8-ft Transonic Pressure Tunnel (TPT). The LFC airfoil experiment was established to provide basic information concerning the design and compatibility of high-performance supercritical airfoils with suction boundary layer control achieved through discrete fine slots or porous surface concepts. It was aimed at validating prediction techniques and establishing a technology base for future transport designs and drag reduction. Good agreement was obtained between measured and theoretically designed shockless pressure distributions. Suction laminarization was maintained over an extensive supercritical zone up to high Reynolds numbers before transition gradually moved forward. Full-chord laminar flow was maintained on the upper and lower surfaces at M sub infinity = 0.82 up to R sub c is less than or equal to 12 x 10 to the 6th power. When accounting for both the suction and wake drag, the total drag could be reducted by at least one-half of that for an equivalent turbulent airfoil. The Unluckiest Quality Individual Stock Investor versus Quality Index Investing
This paper will compare the results of two individuals investing 125,000 as an initial lump sum into a market basket of stocks. The other initially invests only a portion of the $125,000 into a collection of randomly selected quality dividend paying stocks while investing the remaining portion into the same stocks on a quarterly basis over 15 years. This second investor unluckily always invests at the high points of the market. Both investors reinvest the dividends. The comparison of the two investment strategies is astonishing
Approaching equilibrium and the distribution of clusters
We investigate the approach to stable and metastable equilibrium in Ising
models using a cluster representation. The distribution of nucleation times is
determined using the Metropolis algorithm and the corresponding
model using Langevin dynamics. We find that the nucleation rate is suppressed
at early times even after global variables such as the magnetization and energy
have apparently reached their time independent values. The mean number of
clusters whose size is comparable to the size of the nucleating droplet becomes
time independent at about the same time that the nucleation rate reaches its
constant value. We also find subtle structural differences between the
nucleating droplets formed before and after apparent metastable equilibrium has

Evanescent Black Holes
A renormalizable theory of quantum gravity coupled to a dilaton and conformal
matter in two space-time dimensions is analyzed. The theory is shown to be
exactly solvable classically. Included among the exact classical solutions are
configurations describing the formation of a black hole by collapsing matter.
The problem of Hawking radiation and backreaction of the metric is analyzed to
leading order in a expansion, where is the number of matter fields.
The results suggest that the collapsing matter radiates away all of its energy
before an event horizon has a chance to form, and black holes thereby disappear
from the quantum mechanical spectrum. It is argued that the matter
asymptotically approaches a zero-energy ``bound state'' which can carry global
quantum numbers and that a unitary -matrix including such states should
