    A comparison of the value of viscosity for several water models using Poiseuille flow in a nano-channel

    The viscosity-temperature relation is determined for the water models SPC/E, TIP4P, TIP4P/Ew, and TIP4P/2005 by considering Poiseuille flow inside a nano-channel using molecular dynamics. The viscosity is determined by fitting the resulting velocity profile (away from the walls) to the continuum solution for a Newtonian fluid and then compared to experimental values. The results show that the TIP4P/2005 model gives the best prediction of the viscosity for the complete range of temperatures for liquid water, and thus it is the preferred water model of these considered here for simulations where the magnitude of viscosity is crucial. On the other hand, with the TIP4P model, the viscosity is severely underpredicted, and overall the model performed worst, whereas the SPC/E and TIP4P/Ew models perform moderately

    Acute bilateral anterior circulation stroke due to anomalous cerebral vasculature: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Simultaneous bilateral cerebrovascular infarction is relatively rare and its initial presentation as a space-occupying lesion is extremely uncommon. However, bilateral infarction can result from unilateral occlusion of anomalous cerebral vasculature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a man presenting with lower limb weakness and aphasia of acute onset with initial computerised tomography suggesting bifrontal neoplasm. However, further investigation confirmed bilateral anterior cerebral artery territory infarction with a hypoplastic left anterior cerebral artery with the right anterior cerebral artery supplying both frontal lobes (an anatomical variant). We present the clinical and diagnostic features of this presentation and attempt to ascertain, by reviewing existent medical literature, the frequency and patterns of structural variations in cerebral vasculature.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Simultaneous bilateral cerebral infarction can be the result of a unilateral cerebral artery occlusion and this can potentially mimic a space-occupying lesion. Anomalies of cerebral vasculature are not as rare as is usually believed and this should be borne in mind when investigating unusual presentations of cerebrovascular infarction.</p

    Types of the cerebral arterial circle (circle of Willis) in a Sri Lankan Population

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The variations of the circle of Willis (CW) are clinically important as patients with effective collateral circulations have a lower risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke than those with ineffective collaterals. The aim of the present cadaveric study was to investigate the anatomical variations of the CW and to compare the frequency of prevalence of the different variations with previous autopsy studies as variations in the anatomy of the CW as a whole have not been studied in the Indian subcontinent.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The external diameter of all the arteries forming the CW in 225 normal Sri Lankan adult cadaver brains was measured using a calibrated grid to determine the prevalence in the variation in CW. Chisquared tests and a correspondence analysis were performed to compare the relative frequencies of prevalence of anatomical variations in the CW across 6 studies of diverse ethnic populations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report 15 types of variations of CW out of 22 types previously described and one additional type: hypoplastic precommunicating part of the anterior cerebral arteries (A1) and contralateral posterior communicating arteries (PcoA) 5(2%). Statistically significant differences (p < 0.0001) were found between most of the studies except for the Moroccan study. An especially notable difference was observed in the following 4 configurations: 1) hypoplastic precommunicating part of the posterior cerebral arteries (P1), and contralateral A1, 2) hypoplastic PcoA and contralateral P1, 3) hypoplastic PcoA, anterior communicating artery (AcoA) and contralateral P1, 4) bilateral hypoplastic P1s and AcoA in a Caucasian dominant study by Fisher versus the rest of the studies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study reveals that there are significant variations in the CW among intra and inter ethnic groups (Caucasian, African and Asian: Iran and Sri Lanka dominant populations), and warrants further studies keeping the methods of measurements, data assessment, and the definitions of hypoplasia the same.</p

    Comparison of three weather generators for crop modeling: a case study for subtropical environments

    The use and application of decision support systems (DDS) that consider variation in climate and soil conditions has expanded in recent years. Most of these DSS are based on crop simulation models that require daily weather data, so access to weather data, at single sites as well as large amount of sites that may cover a region, becomes a critical issue. In many agricultural regions, especially in developing countries, the density of meteorological stations is low, and reliable long-term continuous data are scarce. Researchers can use interpolated surfaces of weekly or monthly climate variables and generate daily weather from these. Various software tools, called ‘weather generators’, are available to automate this data generation process. The main objective of this study was to compare the performance of three weather generators, MARKSIM, SIMMETEO and WGEN, with observed daily weather data for one of the major maize growing regions in northwest Mexico. A second objective was to evaluate the impact of using different generators for creating daily weather data for the simulation of maize and bean growth at nine locations. No single generator was clearly superior. However, considering data requirements, the weather generator SIMMETEO is robust and can be recommended for (crop) modeling applications at single point locations as well as for applications that use interpolated summary weather data as input. The weather generator MARKSIM created a high inter-annual variability and long chains of wet days that are not found in observed data, but the generator has use for areas of poor distribution of weather stations or where monthly means are unavailable. The results from this study can be considered valid for the subtropical region from which the test locations were selected. For climates in different regions of the world, we suggest repeating the evaluation process following procedures similar to those used in this paper
