What poetry does best: the Harrisons' poetics of being and acting in the world.
Simply paying attention guarantees the transformation from a nature supposedly asleep to the work that displays nature's strange vitality. Art is what attention makes with nature. This observation by Michel De Certeau, noted French philosopher of the everyday, writing the introduction to Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison's (hereafter the Harrisons) seminal work the Lagoon Cycle (1974-1984), gets to the heart of the Harrisons' project to understand and work with the agency of all things, and to recognize that attention is central to being and acting in the world. A question arises about how our attention, as listeners, readers, and viewers, is drawn into a work of art, or more specifically, how the Harrisons draw our attention through their poetics. One of the salient features of the Harrisons' work is attention to what is actually present, in the sense of suspending disbelief. The particular form of attention that the Harrisons exercise aligns with the forms of attention found in improvisation - being in the moment of an experience and using the materials at hand. They see improvisation within the rich potential of inconsistency and contradiction in human relations with environments. This acts as a stimulus to the improvising of new futures
Coupling geometry on binary bipartite networks: hypotheses testing on pattern geometry and nestedness
Upon a matrix representation of a binary bipartite network, via the
permutation invariance, a coupling geometry is computed to approximate the
minimum energy macrostate of a network's system. Such a macrostate is supposed
to constitute the intrinsic structures of the system, so that the coupling
geometry should be taken as information contents, or even the nonparametric
minimum sufficient statistics of the network data. Then pertinent null and
alternative hypotheses, such as nestedness, are to be formulated according to
the macrostate. That is, any efficient testing statistic needs to be a function
of this coupling geometry. These conceptual architectures and mechanisms are by
and large still missing in community ecology literature, and rendered
misconceptions prevalent in this research area. Here the algorithmically
computed coupling geometry is shown consisting of deterministic multiscale
block patterns, which are framed by two marginal ultrametric trees on row and
column axes, and stochastic uniform randomness within each block found on the
finest scale. Functionally a series of increasingly larger ensembles of matrix
mimicries is derived by conforming to the multiscale block configurations. Here
matrix mimicking is meant to be subject to constraints of row and column sums
sequences. Based on such a series of ensembles, a profile of distributions
becomes a natural device for checking the validity of testing statistics or
structural indexes. An energy based index is used for testing whether network
data indeed contains structural geometry. A new version block-based nestedness
index is also proposed. Its validity is checked and compared with the existing
ones. A computing paradigm, called Data Mechanics, and its application on one
real data network are illustrated throughout the developments and discussions
in this paper
Performance of oscillatory flow reactor and stir tank reactor in solvent fermentation from palm oil mill effluent
Advance in mixing technology has developed a new way of mixing fluids by introducing an oscillatory motion to replace the conventional mechanical agitation or an air bubble displacement. This new way of mixing breakthrough has been implemented in an Oscillatory Flow Reactor (OFR). This research will be focus on the performance of OFR as a bioreactor by comparing with Stir Tank Reactor (STR), which is the traditional device in fermentation. The experimental work was conducted in an OFR and a STR with a working volume of 1.5 l. Solvent production strain, Clostridium acetobutylicum NCIMB 13357 was grown in OFR and STR, using fresh Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) as growth medium. All of the experiments were conducted anaerobically under batch mode for 72 hours at constant temperature of 35°C. Comparisons of the growth trend and solvent fermentation performance for both devices were investigated. Total solvents (acetone, butanol and ethanol) produced in an OFR was comparable with that of STR. Total solvents production in OFR is 1.8 times higher than that of STR resulted in total 1.6 g/l of solvents. The results of this investigation showed that OFR has an excellent potential as an alternative device in fermentation processes
