    Maintaining the Mental Model: An Exploratory Study of Dialogic Processes on Good Teaching Practice

    This paper presents some outcomes of an exploratory, mixed-method study that examined mental models of teaching and understanding of learning processes in 26 educators from a small suburb in the Northeastern United States. Participants, in semi-structured written interviews, were asked to rate variables contributing to their mental model of effective teaching. They were then presented with a specific educational problem and asked to provide pedagogic solutions. One finding of this exploration was that some educators did not adhere to their own described mental model of best teaching practices when faced with an educational problem. However, those who responded to the problem in concert with stated mental constructions for teaching were more likely to have engaged in daily dialogue about pedagogic practices with their colleagues. The role of self-reflection, through daily dialogue as a mediator of teacher development is discussed, along with implications for policy and practice in elementary and secondary education

    Blood Lead and Decision Speed in Working Age Adults

    Lead is a central nervous system poison. Healthy People 2010 established a target blood lead level (BLL) for children of 0 μg/dL by 2010, but is silent with regard to any changes in BLLs standards for working age adults. In this paper, the relation of BLL to performance on two neurobehavioral tests was assessed in working age adults (N = 4909; Age 20 to 59 years; 51.4% Female) employing data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES 111). Multiple linear regression analyses indicated a significant effect of BLL on time taken to complete an attention demanding cognitive task (Symbol Digit Substitution Task, SDST) but not accuracy of performance of the SDST or simple reaction time, after controlling for confounding variables of age, sex, race-ethnicity, and education. Persons with BLL ≥5 μg /dL took longer (multivariate adjusted mean = 23.6 Sec, SE = 0.30) compared to individuals with BLLs \u3c5 μg /dL (mean = 22.5 Sec, SE = 0.14). The results suggest that lead burden in working age persons impairs central nervous processes involving executive mental functions (decision speed and attention). The findings, if confirmed by case control and or cohort studies would indicate a need to reconsider currently accepted lead levels in working age adults

    Internships as clinical rotations in business: Enhancing access and options

    Internships are high impact practices that offer work experiences and provide advantages for participating undergraduate students and for the talent acquisition efforts of firms. While research consistently documents the benefits of internships as a transformative experience, access and outcomes may vary for students and for underserved populations. Limitations of internships can include lack of access to enough positions as well as inadequate interactions between undergraduate students, firms, and faculty members in business programs. The purpose of this article is to describe an approach to enhancing access to internships on a larger scale with greater variety. Protocols found in clinical rotations in medicine and best practices for business internships guide development of the concept proposed in this paper. Steps associated with antecedents, process, and outcomes are summarized in a schematic and guide the development of the clinical internship framework. If high impact practices such as internships are to provide transformative experiences for all students, then the ideas developed to enhance academic efforts become critical components of future research and of continuous improvement efforts in business education over time
