    Spatial resolution of a GEM readout TPC using the charge dispersion signal

    A large volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is being considered for the central charged particle tracker for the detector for the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). To meet the ILC-TPC spatial resolution challenge of ~100 microns with a manageable number of readout pads and channels of electronics, Micro Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) are being developed which could use pads comparable in width to the proportional-wire/cathode-pad TPC. We have built a prototype GEM readout TPC with 2 mm x 6 mm pads using the new concept of charge dispersion in MPGDs with a resistive anode. The dependence of transverse resolution on the drift distance has been measured for small angle tracks in cosmic ray tests without a magnetic field for Ar/CO2 (90:10). The GEM-TPC resolution with charge dispersion readout is significantly better than previous measurements carried out with conventional direct charge readout techniques.Comment: 5 figures, 10 page

    Micro-pattern gas detectors, such as the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) and the Micromegas need narrow high density anode readout elements to achieve good spatial resolution. A high-density anode readout would require an unmanageable number of electronics channels for certain potential micro-detector applications such as the Time Projection Chamber. We describe below a new technique to achieve good spatial resolution without increasing the electronics channel count in a modified micro-detector outfitted with a high surface resistivity anode readout structure.     Resolution studies of cosmic-ray tracks in a TPC with GEM readout

    A large volume TPC is a leading candidate for the central tracking detector at a future high energy linear collider. To improve the resolution a new readout based on micro-pattern gas detectors is being developed. Measurements of the spatial resolution of cosmic-ray tracks in a GEM TPC are presented. We find that the resolution suffers if the readout pads are too wide with respect to the charge distribution at the readout plane due to insufficient charge sharing. For narrow pads of 2 x 6 mm**2 we measure a resolution of 100 micometer at short drift distances in the absence of an axial magnetic field. The dependence of the spatial resolution as a function of drift distance allows the determination of the underlying electron statistics. Our results show that the present technique uses about half the statistical power available from the number of primary electrons.     5-14 mu m Spitzer spectra of Themis family asteroids

    Context. The Themis collisional family is one of the largest and best established families in the main belt. Composed of primitive asteroids, there is evidence that water is likely present in a large fraction of its members, either in aqueously altered silicates or in water ice reservoirs. The study of the abundance of water in the outer asteroid belt is important as it may be linked to the origin of Earth\u27s water. Studying the Themis family can also help to constrain the compositional and thermal environment in the region of the solar nebula where these asteroids formed. Aims. Our aim is to constrain the composition and thermal properties of the surfaces of several Themis family asteroids. Methods. We present 5-14 mu m spectra of 8 Themis family asteroids observed with Spitzer: (222) Lucia, (223) Rosa, (316) Goberta, (383) Janina, (468) Lina, (492) Gismonda, (515) Athalia, and (526) Jena. We determine their diameters, geometric albedos and beaming parameters using the near-Earth asteroid thermal model. Their emissivity spectra are studied in order to determine if they exhibit an emission plateau from 9 to 12 mu m which has been observed in other primitive asteroids and attributed to fine-grained silicates (the Si-O stretch fundamental). Results. The derived mean albedo of our sample of Themis family asteroids is (p) over bar (V) = 0.07+/-0.02, and the mean beaming parameter is (eta) over bar = 1.05+/-0.10. The derived (eta) over bar value is close to unity, which implies that the infrared beaming is not significant, there is likely little night-side emission from the asteroids, and the thermal inertia is probably low. The emissivity spectra of at least 5 of our 8 asteroids show a 9-12 mu m emission plateau with spectral contrast of similar to 2-4%, similar but smaller than that observed in the spectra of Trojan asteroids and cometary dust. The plateau may be due to the surfaces having either small silicate grains embedded in a relatively transparent matrix, or from a very under-dense (fairy-castle) surface structure. Conclusions. The surfaces of a large fraction of Themis family asteroids with D similar to 50 km are covered by a fine grained silicate mantle as observed on Trojan asteroids of similar or larger size. The lower amplitude of the silicate emission in Themis family asteroids spectra (2-4%) with respect to that of Trojan asteroids (10-15%) could be attributed to larger dust particles, a slightly denser structure, or a lower silicate dust fraction

    Topical anti-inflammatory activity of Polygonum cuspidatum extract in the TPA model of mouse ear inflammation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study tested the ability of a characterized extract of <it>Polygonum cuspidatum </it>(PCE) to inhibit mouse ear inflammation in response to topical application of 12-<it>O-</it>tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A 50% (wt:vol) ethanolic solution of commercial 200:1 PCE was applied to both ears of female Swiss mice (n = 8) at 0.075, 0.15, 0.3, 1.25 and 2.5 mg/ear 30 min after TPA administration (2 μg/ear). For comparison, 3 other groups were treated with TPA and either 1) the vehicle (50% ethanol) alone, 2) indomethacin (0.5 mg/ear), or 3) <it>trans</it>-resveratrol (0.62 mg/ear). Ear thickness was measured before TPA and at 4 and 24 h post-TPA administration to assess ear edema. Ear punch biopsies were collected at 24 h and weighed as a second index of edema. Myeloperoxidase activity was measured in each ear punch biopsy to assess neutrophil infiltration.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>PCE treatment at all doses significantly reduced ear edema compared to the TPA control. The PCE response was dose-dependent and 2.5 mg PCE significantly inhibited all markers of inflammation to a greater extent than indomethacin (0.5 mg). MPO activity was inhibited at PCE doses ≥ 1.25 mg/ear. <it>Trans-</it>resveratrol inhibited inflammation at comparable doses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PCE inhibits development of edema and neutrophil infiltration in the TPA-treated mouse ear model of topical inflammation.</p

    Measurement of electron screening in muonic lead

    Energies of the transitions between high-lying (n≥6) states of muonic lead were accurately determined. The results are interpreted as a ∼2% test of the electron screening. The agreement between experiment and theory is good if it is assumed that the refilling of the electron K shell is fast. The present results furthermore severely restrict possible ionization of the electron L shell

    Effects of Distal Pocket Mutations on the Geminate Recombination of NO with Leghemoglobin on the Picosecond Time Scale

    The picosecond NO geminate rebinding kinetics of wild-type leghemoglobin, a monomeric plant hemoglobin with structural similarity to myoglobin, and six mutant proteins at the distal histidine (H61G, H61A, H61V, H61L, H61R, H61F) are investigated. All of the mutant proteins yield rebinding kinetics that are initially more rapid than that of the wild-type protein. At long times, the rebinding of H61F becomes slower than that of wild-type leghemoglobin. The H61V, H61L, and H61G mutant proteins give extraordinarily rapid and complete geminate rebinding. On a 40 ps time scale, distal effects are overwhelmingly evident for all of the mutants considered. That binding is both rapid and, in several cases, essentially single-exponential is suggestive of the nature of the barrier induced by the distal modification:  it must be such that the ligand is prohibited from reorienting with respect to, and diffusing sufficiently far from, the heme iron so that a distribution of return paths is not offered to it. Over the past 20 years, the relative importance attributed to the proximal and the distal sides in modulating geminate ligand binding has varied considerably. Our results with leghemoglobin are discussed in terms of the relative contributions of proximal and distal effects to geminate rebinding kinetics

    A Comparative Femtosecond Coherence Study of the Unligated Monomeric Hemeproteins Myoglobin and Leghemoglobin

    Impulsive optical excitation has been performed on wild type, unligated leghemoglobin for the first time to compare the induced vibrational coherence with that observed in myoglobin. Both proteins were excited at the Soret maxima and probed at red and blue edges of the Soret band. The resulting kinetic traces were modulated by low-frequency vibrations. Leghemoglobin shows a decrease in vibrational amplitude compared with myoglobin. The possible cause for the amplitude differences is discussed in terms of contributions from both ground- and excited-state vibrational coherences and ground-state heterogeneity

    Gene expression changes in a tumor xenograft by a pyrrole-imidazole polyamide

    Gene regulation by DNA binding small molecules could have important therapeutic applications. This study reports the investigation of a DNA-binding pyrrole-imidazole polyamide targeted to bind the DNA sequence 5′-WGGWWW-3′ with reference to its potency in a subcutaneous xenograft tumor model. The molecule is capable of trafficking to the tumor site following subcutaneous injection and modulates transcription of select genes in vivo. An FITC-labeled analogue of this polyamide can be detected in tumor-derived cells by confocal microscopy. RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) of tumor tissue allowed the identification of further affected genes, a representative panel of which was interrogated by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR and correlated with cell culture expression levels
