Ethnic Categorizations in Literature

Anglophone scholars have generally been more prepared than their French counterparts to openly recognize the ethnic and political issues raised by literatures arising from international migration. At a macro-level, this gap is reflected in the importance accorded in countries such as the United States and Britain to the concepts of “postcolonialism” and “multiculturalism”, which have generally been eschewed in France, where the linguistically-based notion of “francophonie” spans related ground but from a very different perspective. At a micro-level, the gap is typified by the growing importance accorded in the United States to categories such as African-American and Latino literatures, in contrast with the marginalization in France of categories such as “Beur” or “banlieue” literatures.Les catégories ethniques dans la littérature.Les chercheurs anglophones se sont montrés plus prêts que leurs homologues français à reconnaître ouvertement les dimensions ethniques et politiques des littératures issues des flux migratoires internationaux. Sur le plan des concepts de base, ce contraste se manifeste dans l’importance accordée aux Etats-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne aux notions du « postcolonialisme » et du « multiculturalisme », termes qui sont généralement récusés en France, où l’idée de la « francophonie » marque une approche théorique très différente à des phénomènes littéraires similaires. La représentation cinématographique de l’ethnicité en France : stigmatisation, reconnaissance et banalisation

Le cinéma « beur » et le cinéma dit de la banlieue marquent l’éclosion des ethnicités post-coloniales dans le cinéma français. Cependant, la plupart de ces films restent relativement marginaux par rapport aux grands circuits de distribution ; en outre, les étiquettes qu’on leur appose sont de nature à renforcer cette relégation des minorités, issues de l’immigration post-coloniale, dans une zone secondaire de la production cinématographique française. Pourtant, depuis quelques années, des producteurs et acteurs issus de l’immigration investissent le cinéma grand public. Leur présence grandissante fait preuve d’une diversité croissante, non seulement eu égard aux acteurs visibles à l’écran, mais aussi aux rôles que ceux-ci interprètent, ce qui va dans le sens de ce que les Anglo-saxons appellent integrated casting.Beur and banlieue cinema brought the emergence of post-colonial minorities onto French cinema screens. Most films of this kind remain relatively marginal in relation to the major distribution circuits and the labels by which they are known tend to set them apart as a secondary field outside the mainstream of French cinematic production. In recent years, however, producers and actors of immigrant origin have become much more visible in mainstream box office movies. Médias et migrations dans le bassin méditerranéen. L’internationalisation des savoirs ?

À partir d’une présentation des résultats intermédiaires d’un projet de recherche consacré aux « Médias et migrations dans l’espace euro-méditerranéen », financé par l’Agence nationale de la recherche (anr), l’article propose une étude de cas des complexités scientifiques et pratiques caractérisant l’internationalisation des savoirs. En se penchant sur les réalités de l’espace euro-méditerranéen, ligne de front Nord-Sud, l’objectif du projet est d’appréhender la contribution des médias tout au long du circuit migratoire, depuis l’émigration jusqu’à l’immigration. Il s’agit dans ce cadre, en combinant les perspectives de l’économie politique et des études sur la réception, d’articuler l’analyse du rôle que jouent les médias et les nouveaux médias en amont de la dynamique migratoire dans les pays du sud avec l’étude de leur rôle en aval de cette dynamique, dans les pays du nord de la Méditerranée.Drawing on the provisional results of a research project on « Media and Migration in the Euro-Mediterranean Region », funded by the Agence nationale de la recherche (anr), this article presents a case study in the scientific and practical complexities involved in the internationalization of knowledge. By focusing on the Euro-Mediterranean, on the front line in North-South relations, the project seeks to understand the role of the media throughout the migratory process, from emigration to immigration and permanent settlement. Combining a range of approaches ranging from political economy to reception studies, the research aims to elucidate both the role of traditional media and new media in helping to stimulate migratory flows from the South and their role at the other of the migratory chain, in countries of settlement on the northern side of the Mediterranean

Direct recordings of grid-like neuronal activity in human spatial navigation

Grid cells in the entorhinal cortex appear to represent spatial location via a triangular coordinate system. Such cells, which have been identified in rats, bats and monkeys, are believed to support a wide range of spatial behaviors. Recording neuronal activity from neurosurgical patients performing a virtual-navigation task, we identified cells exhibiting grid-like spiking patterns in the human brain, suggesting that humans and simpler animals rely on homologous spatial-coding schemes

Post-Colonial Cultures and Globalization in France

Most of the papers in this colloquium relate to the territories which the European powers built up overseas during a period of several centuries, part of a process which some theorists of globalization have referred to as a kind of globalization avant la lettre. During the colonial period, the main direction of population flows was from Europe to the overseas empires in America, Africa, Asia and Oceania plus forced migrations from Africa to the Americas. One of the unexpected consequences of European empires and their dissolution has been a reversal of those original North to South migratory flows. Since the end of empire, there have been significant population flows from South to North, i.e. from formerly colonized territories to Europe, leading to the rise of post-colonial minorities within the heartland of the former colonial powers. Post-colonial migrants and their descendants constitute new minorities in Europe not only in a demographic sense but also in their social, political and cultural status. Unlike the United States, which from 1965 onwards gave priority to skills-based criteria in selecting migrants, in Europe during the same period the majority of immigrants from former colonies were unskilled and often illiterate. Not surprisingly, the languages they brought with them have generally remained highly marginalized in relation to the national languages of the countries in which they have settled
