Renormalized Kaluza-Klein theories
Using six-dimensional quantum electrodynamics () as an example we
study the one-loop renormalization of the theory both from the six and
four-dimensional points of view. Our main conclusion is that the properly
renormalized four dimensional theory never forgets its higher dimensional
origin. In particular, the coefficients of the neccessary extra counterterms in
the four dimensional theory are determined in a precise way. We check our
results by studying the reduction of on a two-torus.Comment: LaTeX, 36 pages. A new section added; references improved, typos

Quantum analogues of Hardy's nonlocality paradox
Hardy's nonlocality is a "nonlocality proof without inequalities": it
exemplifies that quantum correlations can be qualitatively stronger than
classical correlations. This paper introduces variants of Hardy's nonlocality
in the CHSH scenario which are realized by the PR-box, but not by quantum
correlations. Hence this new kind of Hardy-type nonlocality is a proof without
inequalities showing that superquantum correlations can be qualitatively
stronger than quantum correlations.Comment: minor fixe
Bohm's interpretation and maximally entangled states
Several no-go theorems showed the incompatibility between the locality
assumption and quantum correlations obtained from maximally entangled spin
states. We analyze these no-go theorems in the framework of Bohm's
interpretation. The mechanism by which non-local correlations appear during the
results of measurements performed on distant parts of entangled systems is
explicitly put into evidence in terms of Bohmian trajectories. It is shown that
a GHZ like contradiction of the type+1=-1 occurs for well-chosen initial
positions of the Bohmian trajectories and that it is this essential
non-classical feature that makes it possible to violate the locality condition.Comment: 18 page
Plasma wave instabilities induced by neutrinos
Quantum field theory is applied to study the interaction of an electron
plasma with an intense neutrino flux. A connection is established between the
field theory results and classical kinetic theory. The dispersion relation and
damping rate of the plasma longitudinal waves are derived in the presence of
neutrinos. It is shown that Supernova neutrinos are never collimated enough to
cause non-linear effects associated with a neutrino resonance. They only induce
neutrino Landau damping, linearly proportional to the neutrino flux and

EPR-Bell Nonlocality, Lorentz Invariance, and Bohmian Quantum Theory
We discuss the problem of finding a Lorentz invariant extension of Bohmian
mechanics. Due to the nonlocality of the theory there is (for systems of more
than one particle) no obvious way to achieve such an extension. We present a
model invariant under a certain limit of Lorentz transformations, a limit
retaining the characteristic feature of relativity, the non-existence of
absolute time resp. simultaneity. The analysis of this model exemplifies an
important property of any Bohmian quantum theory: the quantum equilibrium
distribution cannot simultaneously be realized in all
Lorentz frames of reference.Comment: 24 pages, LaTex, 4 figure
Competing with stationary prediction strategies
In this paper we introduce the class of stationary prediction strategies and
construct a prediction algorithm that asymptotically performs as well as the
best continuous stationary strategy. We make mild compactness assumptions but
no stochastic assumptions about the environment. In particular, no assumption
of stationarity is made about the environment, and the stationarity of the
considered strategies only means that they do not depend explicitly on time; we
argue that it is natural to consider only stationary strategies even for highly
non-stationary environments.Comment: 20 page
Relational Hidden Variables and Non-Locality
We use a simple relational framework to develop the key notions and results
on hidden variables and non-locality. The extensive literature on these topics
in the foundations of quantum mechanics is couched in terms of probabilistic
models, and properties such as locality and no-signalling are formulated
probabilistically. We show that to a remarkable extent, the main structure of
the theory, through the major No-Go theorems and beyond, survives intact under
the replacement of probability distributions by mere relations.Comment: 42 pages in journal style. To appear in Studia Logic
Tilt Grain-Boundary Effects in S- and D-Wave Superconductors
We calculate the s- and d-wave superconductor order parameter in the vicinity
of a tilt grain boundary. We do this self-consistently within the Bogoliubov de
Gennes equations, using a realistic microscopic model of the grain boundary. We
present the first self-consistent calculations of supercurrent flows in such
boundaries, obtaining the current-phase characteristics of grain boundaries in
both s-wave and d-wave superconductors
Life course variations in the associations between FTO and MC4R gene variants and body size
The timing of associations between common genetic variants for weight or body mass index (BMI) across the life course may provide insights into the aetiology of obesity. We genotyped variants in FTO (rs9939609) and near MC4R (rs17782313) in 1240 men and 1239 women born in 1946 and participating in the MRC National Survey of Health and Development. Birth weight was recorded and height and weight were measured or self-reported repeatedly at 11 time-points between ages 2 and 53 years. Hierarchical mixed models were used to test whether genetic associations with weight or BMI standard deviation scores (SDS) changed with age during childhood and adolescence (2–20 years) or adulthood (20–53 years). The association between FTO rs9939609 and BMI SDS strengthened during childhood and adolescence (rate of change: 0.007 SDS/A-allele/year; 95% CI: 0.003–0.010, P < 0.001), reached a peak strength at age 20 years (0.13 SDS/A-allele, 0.08–0.19), and then weakened during adulthood (−0.003 SDS/A-allele/year, −0.005 to −0.001, P = 0.001). MC4R rs17782313 showed stronger associations with weight than BMI; its association with weight strengthened during childhood and adolescence (0.005 SDS/C-allele/year; 0.001–0.008, P = 0.006), peaked at age 20 years (0.13 SDS/C-allele, 0.07–0.18), and weakened during adulthood (−0.002 SDS/C-allele/year, −0.004 to 0.000, P = 0.05). In conclusion, genetic variants in FTO and MC4R showed similar biphasic changes in their associations with BMI and weight, respectively, strengthening during childhood up to age 20 years and then weakening with increasing adult age. Studies of the aetiology of obesity spanning different age groups may identify age-specific determinants of weight gain
Has the nonlinear Meissner effect been observed?
We examine recent high-precision experimental data on the magnetic field,
, dependence of the penetration depth in
(YBCO) for several field directions in the
plane. In a new theoretical analysis that incorporates the effects of
orthorhombic symmetry, we show that the data at sufficiently high magnetic
fields and low temperatures are in quantitative agreement with the theoretical
predictions of the nonlinear Meissner effect.Comment: 4 text pages plus 3 postscript figure
