    Biophysical impacts of climate change on Australia's forests. Contribution of Work Package 2 to the Forest Vulnerability Assessment

    The assessment of the vulnerability of Australian forests to climate change is an initiative of the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council (NRMMC). The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF) was approached to carry out a comprehensive Forest Vulnerability Assessment (FVA). NCCARF engaged four research groups to investigate distinct aspects in relation to the vulnerability of forests, each of which has produced a report. In addition a fifth group was engaged to create a summary and synthesis report of the project. This report – Biophysical impacts of climate change on Australia's forests - is the second in the series. It presents a review of the primary literature on evidence of impacts of climate change on Australian forests. Existing evidence for climate change impacts in relation to direct stresses (CO2, temperature and rainfall), indirect stresses (fire, pests, pathogens and weeds) and plant processes (growth, transpiration and phenology) is discussed. The report concludes with a discussion of the overall impact of climate change on vegetation and the ecosystem services provided by forests. It should be noted that there have been several excellent reviews of climate change impacts on Australian forests as well as reports on climate change impacts on natural heritage and biodiversity. Conclusions drawn from these earlier reviews are not repeated. Instead, the report focuses on drawing evidence from the primary literature, including grey literature. Relevant literature was identified by bibliographic searches and in consultation with experts across Australia. This review highlighted a number of uncertainties involved in assessing forest vulnerability to climate change. These include uncertainty over changes in the climate, the ecosystem-scale responses to climate change, and interactions of climate change impacts with other global change processes.     Loss of muscle mass in the immediate post-operative period is associated with inadequate dietary protein and energy intake

    Despite the implementation of 'Enhanced Recovery After Surgery' (ERAS) protocols, major abdominal surgery is still associated with significant and detrimental losses of muscle mass and function in the post-operative period. Although ERAS protocols advocate both early mobility and dietary intake, dietary composition in the immediate post-operative period is poorly characterised, despite muscle losses being greatest in this period. Herein, we show in 15 patients (66 ± 6 y, 12:3 M:F) who lost ~10% m. vastus lateralis muscle mass in the 5 days after open colorectal resective surgery, mean energy intake was only ~25% of the minimum ESPEN recommendation of 25 kcal/kg/d and daily dietary protein intake was only ~12% of the ESPEN recommended guidelines of 1.5 g/kg/d. Given the known importance of nutrition for muscle mass maintenance, innovative dietary interventions are needed in the immediate post-operative period, accounting for specific patient dietary preference to maximise compliance (e.g., soft-textured foods).</p

    Mentoring today - the students views: An investigative study of pre-registration nursing students' experiences of mentoring in one theory/practice module of the Common Foundation Programme on a Project 2000 course

    The study reported in this paper investigated the mentoring experiences and perceptions of pre-registration nursing students in one organization, on a theory/practice nursing module. It considered the extent to which students' understanding and expectations matched their actual experiences. Interviews were conducted with 35 students on a Common Foundation Programme, and 15 allocated mentors, using a semi-structured interview guide. These were done within the clinical setting of the wards on which the students were placed as part of their requirements for completion of the module. A distortion of the actual meaning of mentoring appears to be present because of the lack of clarity provided, both internally by organizations and by the English National Board (ENB) who have provided loose guidelines. The implications of this distortion are discussed. The application of a mentoring role in practice needs to be re-examined, with the provision of a clear structured guide internally and externally, with regard to the needs of students and staff who are expected to act as mentors. The study was small scale and cannot be generalized. Mentoring, however, is now widely used within pre-registration nursing education, even though it is generally considered that its use may not be appropriate. Follow-up studies need to be undertaken on an ongoing basis, to examine what actually happens in practice, and to consider ways of ensuring that the benefits for staff and students are enhanced
