Co-operative control of the dingo
Vermin control measures in the pastoral areas have often been rendered less effective by the existence of a number of Vermin Boards each operating independently of its neighbours. Bonus payments for scalps for instance, have often varied considerably, even between boards with adjoining territories, so that trafficking in scalps was encouraged. Bonus payments by some boards have been excessively high, with the result that shortage of funds has soon compelled a reduction of the bonus rate which in turn has brought about a steep build-up in the vermin population
A quasi classical approach to fully differential ionization cross sections
A classical approximation to time dependent quantum mechanical scattering in
the M\o{}ller formalism is presented. Numerically, our approach is similar to a
standard Classical-Trajectory-Monte-Carlo calculation. Conceptually, however,
our formulation allows one to release the restriction to stationary initial
distributions. This is achieved by a classical forward-backward propagation
technique. As a first application and for comparison with experiment we present
fully differential cross sections for electron impact ionization of atomic
hydrogen in the Erhardt geometry.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
LuxS-independent formation of AI-2 from ribulose-5-phosphate
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In many bacteria, the signal molecule AI-2 is generated from its precursor <it>S</it>-ribosyl-L-homocysteine in a reaction catalysed by the enzyme LuxS. However, generation of AI-2-like activity has also been reported for organisms lacking the <it>luxS </it>gene and the existence of alternative pathways for AI-2 formation in <it>Escherichia coli </it>has recently been predicted by stochastic modelling. Here, we investigate the possibility that spontaneous conversion of ribulose-5-phosphate could be responsible for AI-2 generation in the absence of <it>luxS</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Buffered solutions of ribulose-5-phosphate, but not ribose-5-phosphate, were found to contain high levels of AI-2 activity following incubation at concentrations similar to those reported <it>in vivo</it>. To test whether this process contributes to AI-2 formation by bacterial cells <it>in vivo</it>, an improved <it>Vibrio harveyi </it>bioassay was used. In agreement with previous studies, culture supernatants of <it>E. coli </it>and <it>Staphylococcus aureus luxS </it>mutants were found not to contain detectable levels of AI-2 activity. However, low activities were detected in an <it>E. coli pgi-eda-edd-luxS </it>mutant, a strain which degrades glucose entirely via the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway, with ribulose-5-phosphate as an obligatory intermediate.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results suggest that LuxS-independent formation of AI-2, via spontaneous conversion of ribulose-5-phosphate, may indeed occur <it>in vivo</it>. It does not contribute to AI-2 formation in wildtype <it>E. coli </it>and <it>S. aureus </it>under the conditions tested, but may be responsible for the AI-2-like activities reported for other organisms lacking the <it>luxS </it>gene.</p
A semi-classical over-barrier model for charge exchange between highly charged ions and one-optical electron atoms
Absolute total cross sections for electron capture between slow, highly
charged ions and alkali targets have been recently measured. It is found that
these cross sections follow a scaling law with the projectile charge which is
different from the one previously proposed basing on a classical over-barrier
model (OBM) and verified using rare gases and molecules as targets. In this
paper we develop a "semi-classical" (i.e. including some quantal features) OBM
attempting to recover experimental results. The method is then applied to
ion-hydrogen collisions and compared with the result of a sophisticated
quantum-mechanical calculation. In the former case the accordance is very good,
while in the latter one no so satisfactory results are found. A qualitative

Impact of Detector-element Active-area Shape and Fill Factor on Image Sampling, Restoration, and Super-Resolution
In many undersampled imaging systems, spatial integration from the individual detector elements is the dominant component of the system point spread function (PSF). Conventional focal plane arrays (FPAs) utilize square detector elements with a nearly 100% fill factor, where fill factor is defined as the fraction of the detector element area that is active in light detection. A large fill factor is generally considered to be desirable because more photons are collected for a given pitch, and this leads to a higher signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). However, the large active area works against super-resolution (SR) image restoration by acting as an additional low pass filter in the overall PSF when modeled on the SR sampling grid. A high fill factor also tends to increase blurring from pixel cross-talk. In this paper, we study the impact of FPA detector-element shape and fill factor on SR. A detailed modulation transfer function analysis is provided along with a number of experimental results with both simulated data and real data acquired with a midwave infrared (MWIR) imaging system. We demonstrate the potential advantage of low fill factor detector elements when combined with SR image restoration. Our results suggest that low fill factor circular detector elements may be the best choice. New video results are presented using robust adaptive Wiener filter SR processing applied to data from a commercial MWIR imaging system with both high and low detector element fill factors
AI-2 does not function as a quorum sensing molecule in Campylobacter jejuni during exponential growth in vitro
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Campylobacter jejuni </it>contains a homologue of the <it>luxS </it>gene shown to be responsible for the production of the signalling molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2) in <it>Vibrio harveyi </it>and <it>Vibrio cholerae</it>. The aim of this study was to determine whether AI-2 acted as a diffusible quorum sensing signal controlling <it>C. jejuni </it>gene expression when it is produced at high levels during mid exponential growth phase.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>AI-2 activity was produced by the parental strain NCTC 11168 when grown in rich Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB) as expected, but interestingly was not present in defined Modified Eagles Medium (MEM-α). Consistent with previous studies, the <it>luxS </it>mutant showed comparable growth rates to the parental strain and exhibited decreased motility halos in both MEM-α and MHB. Microarray analysis of genes differentially expressed in wild type and <it>luxS </it>mutant strains showed that many effects on mRNA transcript abundance were dependent on the growth medium and linked to metabolic functions including methionine metabolism. Addition of exogenously produced AI-2 to the wild type and the <it>luxS </it>mutant, growing exponentially in either MHB or MEM-α did not induce any transcriptional changes as analysed by microarray.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Taken together these results led us to conclude that there is no evidence for the role of AI-2 in cell-to-cell communication in <it>C. jejuni </it>strain NCTC 11168 under the growth conditions used, and that the effects of the <it>luxS </it>mutation on the transcriptome are related to the consequential loss of function in the activated methyl cycle.</p

Electron impact double ionization of helium from classical trajectory calculations
With a recently proposed quasiclassical ansatz [Geyer and Rost, J. Phys. B 35
(2002) 1479] it is possible to perform classical trajectory ionization
calculations on many electron targets. The autoionization of the target is
prevented by a M\o{}ller type backward--forward propagation scheme and allows
to consider all interactions between all particles without additional
stabilization. The application of the quasiclassical ansatz for helium targets
is explained and total and partially differential cross sections for electron
impact double ionization are calculated. In the high energy regime the
classical description fails to describe the dominant TS1 process, which leads
to big deviations, whereas for low energies the total cross section is
reproduced well. Differential cross sections calculated at 250 eV await their

An argument for the use of Aristotelian method in bioethics
The main claim of this paper is that the method outlined and used in Aristotle's Ethics is an appropriate and credible one to use in bioethics. Here “appropriate” means that the method is capable of establishing claims and developing concepts in bioethics and “credible” that the method has some plausibility, it is not open to obvious and immediate objection. It begins by suggesting why this claim matters and then gives a brief outline of Aristotle's method. The main argument is made in three stages. First, it is argued that Aristotelian method is credible because it compares favourably with alternatives. In this section it is shown that Aristotelian method is not vulnerable to criticisms that are made both of methods that give a primary place to moral theory (such as utilitarianism) and those that eschew moral theory (such as casuistry and social science approaches). As such, it compares favourably with these other approaches that are vulnerable to at least some of these criticisms. Second, the appropriateness of Aristotelian method is indicated through outlining how it would deal with a particular case. Finally, it is argued that the success of Aristotle's philosophy is suggestive of both the credibility and appropriateness of his method.</p
Super-resolution in the presence of atmospheric optical turbulence
The design of imaging systems involves navigating a complex trade space. As a result, many imaging systems employ focal plane arrays with a detector pitch that is insufficient to meet the Nyquist sampling criterion under diffraction-limited imaging conditions. This undersampling may result in aliasing artifacts and prevent the imaging system from achieving the full resolution afforded by the optics. Another potential source of image degradation, especially for long-range imaging, is atmospheric optical turbulence. Optical turbulence gives rise to spatially and temporally varying image blur and warping from fluctuations in the index of refraction along with optical path. Under heavy turbulence, the blurring from the turbulence acts as an anti-aliasing filter, and undersampling does not generally occur. However, under light to moderate turbulence, many imaging systems will exhibit both aliasing artifacts and turbulence degradation. Few papers in the literature have analyzed or addressed both of these degradations together. In this paper, we provide a novel analysis of undersampling in the presence of optical turbulence. Specifically, we provide an optical transfer function analysis that illustrates regimes where aliasing and turbulence are both present, and where they are not. We also propose and evaluate a super-resolution (SR) method for combating aliasing that offers robustness to optical turbulence. The method has a tuning parameter that allows it to transition from traditional diffraction-limited SR, to pure turbulence mitigation with no SR. The proposed method is based on Fusion of Interpolated Frames (FIF) SR, recently proposed by two of the current authors. We quantitatively evaluate the SR method with varying levels of optical turbulence using simulated sequences. We also presented results using real infrared imagery
