    Bulk Glass Formation in Eutectic of La-Cu-Ni-Al Metallic Alloys

    A eutectic in La-rich La-Cu₀.₅Ni₀.₅-Al alloys was determined by studying the melting behaviors and the microstructure observations. The microstructures of the La-Cu-Ni-Al alloys prepared by Bridgman Solidification and copper mould casting were studied by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that La₆₆[Cu₀.₅Ni₀.₅]₂₀Al₁₄ alloy is very near to a pseudo-ternary eutectic. When the cooling rate is higher than 450 K/s, fully amorphous can be formed; when the cooling rate is within 15 K/s to 450 K/s, the alloy has a microstructure of dendrite plus amorphous, when the cooling rate is within 12 K/s to 1.5 K/s, the microstructures of the alloy are dendrite plus eutectic, and when the cooling rate is lower than 0.12 K/s, the morphology of the alloy is eutectic microstructure. The off eutectic alloy has better glass forming ability, the best glass forming alloy obtained at La₆₂[Cu₀.₅Ni₀.₅>]₂₄Al₁₄ along the composition line of La₈₆₋x[Cu₀.₅Ni₀.₅]xAl₁₄.     This paper explores the fundamental influence of consumer rating behavior on an emerging third-party software application market, mobile app market. In app market, consumers’ ex ante belief on app utility essentially is determined by the app rating while at the same time the app rating itself is derived from the ex post utility obtained by purchased customers. We develop an analytical model which explicitly characterizes this bidirectional rating-utility conversion based on a newly introduced concept “reservation rating”. After building this conversion process into the utility function, we examine the market equilibrium and show how change in consumer rating attitude, such as being severer in offering ratings or being less critical in accepting ratings, would affect the developers’ optimal choices of app price and app quality level as well as the platform owner’s optimal revenue sharing policy

    A Hidden Markov Model For Conversion Rate Dynamics In Online Retail

    In this study, we use a proprietary data set from an online marketplace to study the conversion rate dynamics in online retail. We examine how seller-level covariates, such as online sellers’ pricing and product strategies, service responsiveness, and other attributes, affect conversion rates. Specifically, we address the following research questions: (i) How do sellers’ covariates affect their conversion rates? (ii) Is the relationship between the conversion rate and sellers’ covariates state dependent? (iii) If the relationship is state dependent, what are the factors that determine the states and the state transitions? The estimation results indicate that there are two states that affect conversion rate dynamics. The relationship between the conversion rate and the sellers’ covariates is state dependent, that is, given the different states of sellers, the effects of the sellers’ covariates on their conversion rates are different.     Hidroksiapatit (HA) adalah sejenis kalsium fosfat yang merupakan komposisi kepada kebanyakan fasa mineral tulang dan enamel gigi. HA bersifat bioserasi dan berkonduksi osteo selain mempunyai afiniti biologi dan kimia yang bagus untuk tisu tulang. Dengan ciri tersebut, HA diguna secara luas sebagai graf tulang dan bahan salut bagi implan tisu keras manusia. Walau bagaimanapun, kerapuhan dan keliatan patah yang rendah HA tersinter menghadkan penggunaannya dalam aplikasi bebanan yang tinggi. Kajian ini tertumpu kepada mengenal pasti kesan atmosfera sinteran dengan gas nitrogen (N2) ke atas sifat mekanik HA untuk aplikasi pergigian. Serbuk nano HA dicirikan dengan menggunakan mikroskop elektron pancaran. Cakera silinder HA dihasilkan dengan kaedah penekanan ekapaksi. Kemudian, cakera silinder HA dikenakan tekanan isostatik sejuk dan disinter dalam dua atmosfera sinteran yang berbeza iaitu sinteran dalam gas N2 dan sinteran dalam udara pada suhu 1300°C. Ketumpatan, mikrostruktur, kestabilan fasa dan mikrokekerasan HA tersinter dicirikan. Secara keseluruhan, sinteran dengan menggunakan gas N2 menyebabkan pertumbuhan saiz butiran yang lebih besar dengan ketumpatan relatif dan mikrokekerasan yang lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan atmosfera sinteran dalam udara. Dalam kajian ini, HA yang disinter dengan menggunakan gas N2 pada suhu 1300°C menunjukkan mikrostruktur yang lebih tumpat, ketumpatan relatif (94%) dan mikrokekerasan (4.07 GPa) yang lebih tinggi jika berbanding dengan sinteran dalam udara tanpa penguraian HA. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan atmosfera sinteran dengan menggunakan gas N2 pada suhu 1300°C dapat meningkatkan sifat kekerasan Vickers nanokomposit HA dengan mikrostruktur yang padat

Over the years there were reports that indicated the development of resistance on range of pesticides that are used against the flies. Researches have demonstrated that there are several functional protein molecules which contribute directly or indirectly as a response to oxidative stress and resistance against insecticides. As currently, the whole genome sequencing of the organisms has enabled future study to be conducted in evaluating the behaviour of the targeted protein/enzyme in response to oxidative stress and intake of insecticides in the flies

    Common promoter variants of the NDUFV2 gene do not confer susceptibility to schizophrenia in Han Chinese

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase flavoprotein gene (<it>NDUFV2</it>), which encodes a 24 kD mitochondrial complex I subunit, has been reported to be positively associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in different populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We genotyped the promoter variants of this gene (rs6506640 and rs1156044) by direct sequencing in 529 unrelated Han Chinese schizophrenia patients and 505 matched controls. Fisher's Exact test was performed to assess whether these two reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) confer susceptibility to schizophrenia in Chinese.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Allele, genotype and haplotype comparison between the case and control groups showed no statistical significance, suggesting no association between the <it>NDUFV2 </it>gene promoter variants and schizophrenia in Han Chinese.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The role of NDUFV2 played in schizophrenia needs to be further studied. Different racial background and/or population substructure might account for the inconsistent results between studies.</p

    Full velocities and propagation directions of coronal mass ejections inferred from simultaneous full-disk imaging and Sun-as-a-star spectroscopic observations

    Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are violent ejections of magnetized plasma from the Sun, which can trigger geomagnetic storms, endanger satellite operations and destroy electrical infrastructures on the Earth. After systematically searching Sun-as-a-star spectra observed by the Extreme-ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from May 2010 to May 2022, we identified eight CMEs associated with flares and filament eruptions by analyzing the blue-wing asymmetry of the O III 52.58 nm line profiles. Combined with images simultaneously taken by the 30.4 nm channel of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard SDO, the full velocity and propagation direction for each of the eight CMEs are derived. We find a strong correlation between geomagnetic indices (Kp and Dst) and the angle between the CME propagation direction and the Sun-Earth line, suggesting that Sun-as-a-star spectroscopic observations at EUV wavelengths can potentially help to improve the prediction accuracy of the geoeffectiveness of CMEs. Moreover, an analysis of synthesized long-exposure Sun-as-a-star spectra implies that it is possible to detect CMEs from other stars through blue-wing asymmetries or blueshifts of spectral lines.Comment: Accepted by Ap

    Aqueous liquids have a wide range of applications in many fields. Basic physical properties like the density and the viscosity have great impacts on the functionalities of a given ionic liquid. For the millions kinds of existing liquids, only a few have been systematically measured with the density and the viscosity using traditional methods. However, these methods are limited to measure the density and the viscosity of an ionic liquid simultaneously especially in processing micro sample volumes. To meet this challenge, we present a new theoretical model and a novel method to separate density and viscosity measurements with single quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) in this work.
