    During petrogenetic studies of basic plutonic rocks, there are at least three major questions to be considered: (1) what were the relative proportions of cumulate crystals and intercumulus melt in a given sample? (2) what is the composition and variation in composition of the melts within the pluton? and (3) what is the original composition of the liquids, their source and evolution prior to the time of emplacement? Use of both saturation surfaces can place strong limits on the compositions of potential cumulate phases and intercumulus melts. Consideration of appropriate trace elements can indicate whether a sample is an orthocumulate, adcumulate or mesocumulate. Thus, when trace element and petrographic data are considered together with the saturation surfaces, it should be possible to begin to answer the three major questions given above, even for strongly recrystallized basic plutons

    Uranium-lead ages and Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic data for gneisses near the Kolar Schist Belt and their interpretation as evidence for the juxtaposition of discrete Archean terranes were presented. The granodioritic Kambha gneiss east of the schist belt has a zircon age of 2532 + or - 3 Ma and mantle-like initial Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic ratios. Therefore these gneisses are thought to represent new crust added to the craton in the latest Archean. By contrast, more mafic Dod gneisses and leucocratic Dosa gneisses west of the schist belt (2632 + or - 7 and 2610 + or - 10 Ma) show evidence for contamination of their magmatic precursors (LREE-enriched mantle-derived for the Dod gneisses) by older (greater than 3.2 Ga) continental crust. Fragments of this older crust may be present as granitic and tonalitic inclusions in the 2.6-Ga gneisses and in shear zones. The antiquity of these fragments is supported by their Nd, Sr, and Pb isotopic compositions and by 2.8 to greater than 3.2 Ga zircon cores

    The tectonic setting of the Kolar Schist Belt and why the belt may represent a late Archean suture was discussed. The isotopic and chronological evidence that suggest diverse origins of the various packages of supracrustal rocks within the schist belt and the two gneiss terrains adjoining the belt were summarized. The eastern and western amphibolites were derived from sources at similar depths in the mantle (probably at similar ages, ca. 2.7 Ga), but these sources had distinct trace element compositions and histories. A distinctive feature of these differences was shown by the differences between the east and west amphibolites on a Ce vs. Nd diagram. In the gneisses the age and isotopic evidence suggest that the two terranes had distinct histories until after 2520 Ma and by 2420 Ma (Ar-40/Ar-39 age of muscovite in the sheared margin of the schist belt). Based on these data, the schist belt probably represents the site of accretion of diverse fragments (terrains) to the margin of the craton in the latest Archean, possibly as an Archean analog to the Phanerozoic North American Cordillera

    Navigating the Food Blogosphere: Finding a Place for Feminism in a Highly Feminized Blogosphere

    I authored a food blog, Yum., in my early twenties. A food blogs is a sub-genre of lifestyle blogs, and many lifestyle blogs are written by women for a predominantly female audience. From the outside, I projected myself as a confident young woman ready to conquer the culinary world; on the inside, I felt constrained by a genre that demanded perfection and set unrealistic standards for women. Added to this pressure the fear I would not be taken seriously as a writer because I wrote about food and entertaining—what I considered to be feminine endeavors. I was conflicted about my role a writer, and I believe this internal conflict I felt when writing in a highly feminized space is worth exploring. Why did it seem as though femininity and feminism could not coexist in my food blog? A critical analysis of my past blog entries through a feminist lens helps me to reconcile my past as an unenlightened feminist. I believe increasing instances of food blogs that are overtly both feminist and feminine might help to redraw boundaries and establish a genre that is more up-to-date and welcoming of more women’s voices

    Predicting E-Cigarette Use Among Emerging Adults Using Perceived Social Norms and Outcome Expectancies

    Despite low rates of combustible tobacco use rates among adolescents and young adults, e-cigarettes continue to gain popularity. A few factors have been shown to be related to e-cigarette use based on prior research. One such example is social enhancement expectancies. Additionally, greater perceptions of harm have been found to be inversely related to e-cigarette use such that those that expect increased risk to their health are less likely to report using e-cigarettes. I hypothesized that social enhancement expectancies would mediate the relationship between perceptions of social norms and e-cigarette dependence. I also hypothesized that perceived harm, such as greater perceived health risks, would moderate the indirect effect of perceived social norms and e-cigarette dependence. The same analyses were also examined with a dichotomous e-cigarette user status outcome variable. E-cigarette use status was determined based on past 30- day use of e-cigarettes. Analyses revealed that injunctive norms emerged as a significant predictor of both positive social outcome expectancies and e-cigarette user status. Perceived harm was also found to be a significant predictor of e-cigarette dependence. Further exploration of within group differences among e-cigarette users may be warranted in order to develop an intervention strategy tailored to this group
