Extragalactic Foreground Contamination in Temperature-based CMB Lens Reconstruction
We discuss the effect of unresolved point source contamination on estimates
of the CMB lensing potential, from components such as the thermal
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, radio point sources, and the Cosmic Infrared
Background. We classify the possible trispectra associated with such source
populations, and construct estimators for the amplitude and scale-dependence of
several of the major trispectra. We show how to propagate analytical models for
these source trispectra to biases for lensing. We also construct a
"source-hardened" lensing estimator which experiences significantly smaller
biases when exposed to unresolved point sources than the standard quadratic
lensing estimator. We demonstrate these ideas in practice using the sky
simulations of Sehgal et. al., for cosmic-variance limited experiments designed
to mimic ACT, SPT, and Planck
Attitudes to telecare among older people, professional care workers and informal carers: a preventative strategy or crisis management?
This paper reports findings from an attitudinal survey towards telecare that emerged from twenty-two focus groups comprising ninety-two older people, fifty-five professional stakeholders and thirty-nine carers. These were convened in three different regions of England as a precursor to telecare service development. The results from this study suggest that informants’ views were shaped by prior knowledge of conventional health and social care delivery in their locality and the implication is that expectations and requirements in respect of telecare services in general are likely to be informed by wider perceptions about the extent to which community care should operate as a preventative strategy or as a mechanism for crisis management
FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED GRASS-BASED FARMING SYSTEMS IN THE NORTHERN TALLGRASS PRAIRIE REGION
We develop a series of new grass-based budgets for use in FINPACK, a standard farm finance analysis tool. The new budgets are then applied to an evaluation of plausible grass-based systems on three farms in the Northern Tallgrass Prairie region of Minnesota and North Dakota. The farms are used for illustration purposes only. We find no grass-based alternative that financially outperforms current non-grass operations. Nor do any score particularly well under a lender credit rating process that we adapted for this study. Our results suggest caution before one accepts claims that grass-based systems are uniformly feasible and financially desirable. There undoubtedly are individual situations in which such alternatives make financial sense, but their use may have to be accompanied by income supplements from external sources in order to further wide-spread adoption." Two-way time transfers between NRC/NBS and NRC/USNO via the Hermes (CTS) satellite
At each station the differences were measured between the local UTC seconds pulse and the remote UTC pulse received by satellite. The difference between the readings, if station delays are assumed to be symmetrical, is two times the difference between the clocks at the two ground station sites. Over a 20-minute period, the precision over the satellite is better than 1 ns. The time transfer from NRC to the CRC satellite terminal near Ottawa and from NBS to the Denver HEW terminal was examined
Melioidosis in northern Australia
Burkholderia pseudomallei, the environmental bacterium that causes melioidosis, is endemic to northern Australia. Melioidosis is a strongly seasonal disease, occurring predominantly in individuals with specific comorbidities that include diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, chronic lung disease, immunosuppresion, malignancy and hazardous alcohol use. Most patients are bacteraemic and the majority have pneumonia, however, the infection can involve almost any organ, with the skin, soft tissues, genitourinary system, bones, and joints frequently affected; multi-organ involvement is also common. Central nervous system involvement is less frequent but is more likely to cause death and long-term disability. The incidence of melioidosis is increasing in Australia, but improvements in management have resulted in the local case-fatality rate declining to approximately 10%. Further progress requires greater awareness of the disease and the development of technologies that might expedite diagnosis. A deeper understanding of the disease's pathophysiology - particularly the role of virulence factors - may also help define optimal management strategies, including the duration of antimicrobial therapy and the role of adjunctive treatments. Public health strategies that address the risk factors for this opportunistic infection - and the social inequity that drives them - would also reduce the morbidity and mortality of this life-threatening disease
The Kolar Schist Belt: A possible Archaean suture zone
The Kolar Schist Belt represents a N-S trending discontinuity in the structures, lithologies, and emplacement and metamorphic ages of late Archean gneisses. The suggestion of a much older basement on the west side of the belt is not seen on the east. Within the schist belt amphibolites from each side have distinctly different chemical characteristics, suggesting different sources at similar mantle depths. These amphibolites were probably not part of a single volcanic sequence, but may have formed about the same time in two completely different settings. Could the amphibolites with depleted light REE patterns represent Archean ocean floor volcanics which are derived from a mantle source with a long term depletion of the light REE? Why are the amphibolites giving an age which may be older than the exposed gneisses immediately on either side of the belt? These results suggest that it is necessary to seriously consider whether the Kolar Schist Belt may be a suture between two late Archean continental terranes
The life and health challenges of young Malaysian couples: results from a stakeholder consensus and engagement study to support non-communicable disease prevention
BACKGROUND: Malaysia faces burgeoning obesity and diabetes epidemics with a 250% and 88% increase respectively between 1996 and 2006. Identifying the health challenges of young adults in Malaysia, who constitute 27.5 % of the population, is critical for NCD prevention. The aim of the study was two-fold: (1) to achieve consensus amongst stakeholders on the most important challenge impacting the health of young adults, and (2) to engage with stakeholders to formulate a NCD prevention framework.METHODS: The Delphi Technique was utilised to achieve group consensus around the most important life and health challenges that young adults face in Malaysia. Subsequently, the results of the consensus component were shared with the stakeholders in an engagement workshop to obtain input on a NCD prevention framework.RESULTS: We found that life stress was a significant concern. It would seem that the apathy towards pursuing or maintaining a healthy lifestyle among young adults may be significantly influenced by the broader distal determinant of life stress. The high cost of living is suggested to be the main push factor for young working adults towards attaining better financial security to improve their livelihood. In turn, this leads to a more stressful lifestyle with less time to focus on healthier lifestyle choices.CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight a pivotal barrier to healthier lifestyles. By assisting young adults to cope with daily living coupled with realistic opportunities to make healthier dietary choices, be more active, and less sedentary could assist in the development of NCD health promotion strategies<br/
Inferring the three-dimensional distribution of dust in the Galaxy with a non-parametric method: Preparing for Gaia
We present a non-parametric model for inferring the three-dimensional (3D)
distribution of dust density in the Milky Way. Our approach uses the extinction
measured towards stars at different locations in the Galaxy at approximately
known distances. Each extinction measurement is proportional to the integrated
dust density along its line-of-sight. Making simple assumptions about the
spatial correlation of the dust density, we can infer the most probable 3D
distribution of dust across the entire observed region, including along sight
lines which were not observed. This is possible because our model employs a
Gaussian Process to connect all lines-of-sight. We demonstrate the capability
of our model to capture detailed dust density variations using mock data as
well as simulated data from the Gaia Universe Model Snapshot. We then apply our
method to a sample of giant stars observed by APOGEE and Kepler to construct a
3D dust map over a small region of the Galaxy. Due to our smoothness constraint
and its isotropy, we provide one of the first maps which does not show the
