Coherent adiabatic theory of two-electron quantum dot molecules in external spin baths
We derive an accurate molecular orbital based expression for the coherent
time evolution of a two-electron wave function in a quantum dot molecule where
the electrons interact with each other, with external time dependent
electromagnetic fields and with a surrounding nuclear spin reservoir. The
theory allows for direct numerical modeling of the decoherence in quantum dots
due to hyperfine interactions. Calculations result in good agreement with
recent singlet-triplet dephasing experiments by Laird et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.
97, 056801 (2006)], as well as analytical model calculations. Furthermore, it
is shown that using a much faster electric switch than applied in these
experiments will transfer the initial state to excited states where the
hyperfine singlet-triplet mixing is negligible.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A global protocol for monitoring of coral bleaching
Coral bleaching and subsequent mortality represent a major threat to the future health and productivity of coral reefs. However a lack of reliable data on occurrence, severity and other characteristics of bleaching events hampers research on the causes and consequences of this important phenomenon. This article describes a global protocol for monitoring coral bleaching events, which addresses this problem and can be used by people with different levels of expertise and resources
Thermodynamics and phase behavior of the lamellar Zwanzig model
Binary mixtures of lamellar colloids represented by hard platelets are
studied within a generalization of the Zwanzig model for rods, whereby the
square cuboids can take only three orientations along the , or axes.
The free energy is calculated within Rosenfeld's ''Fundamental Measure Theory''
(FMT) adapted to the present model. In the one-component limit, the model
exhibits the expected isotropic to nematic phase transition, which narrows as
the aspect ratio ( is the width and the thickness of the
platelets) increases. In the binary case the competition between nematic
ordering and depletion-induced segregation leads to rich phase behaviour.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Conditional quantum state engineering in repeated 2-photon down conversion
The U(1,1) and U(2) transformations realized by three-mode interaction in the
respective parametric approximations are studied in conditional measurement,
and the corresponding non-unitary transformation operators are derived. As an
application, the preparation of single-mode quantum states using an optical
feedback loop is discussed, with special emphasis of Fock state preparation.
For that example, the influence of non-perfect detection and feedback is also
considered.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, using a4.st
An exact formalism to study the thermodynamic properties of hard-sphere systems under spherical confinement
This paper presents a modified grand canonical ensemble which provides a new
simple and efficient scheme to study few-body fluid-like inhomogeneous systems
under confinement. The new formalism is implemented to investigate the exact
thermodynamic properties of a hard sphere (HS) fluid-like system with up to
three particles confined in a spherical cavity. In addition, the partition
function of this system was used to analyze the surface thermodynamic
properties of the many-HS system and to derive the exact curvature dependence
of both the surface tension and adsorption in powers of the density. The
expressions for the surface tension and the adsorption were also obtained for
the many- HS system outside of a fixed hard spherical object. We used these
results to derive the dependence of the fluid-substrate Tolman length up to
first order in density.Comment: 6 figures. The paper includes new exact results about hard spheres
fluid-like system

Fluids confined in wedges and by edges: Virial series for the line-thermodynamic properties of hard spheres
This work is devoted to analyze the relation between the thermodynamic properties of a confined fluid and the shape of its confining vessel. Recently, new insights in this topic were found through the study of cluster integrals for inhomogeneous fluids that revealed the dependence on the vessel shape of the low density behavior of the system. Here, the statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of fluids confined in wedges or by edges is revisited, focusing on their cluster integrals. In particular, the well known hard sphere fluid, which was not studied in this framework so far, is analyzed under confinement and its thermodynamic properties are analytically studied up to order two in the density. Furthermore, the analysis is extended to the confinement produced by a corrugated wall. These results rely on the obtained analytic expression for the second cluster integral of the confined hard sphere system as a function of the opening dihedral angle 0 < β < 2Ï€. It enables a unified approach to both wedges and edges.Fil: Urrutia, Ignacio. Comisión Nacional de EnergÃa Atómica. Centro Atómico Constituyentes; Argentina. Testing Asteroseismic Radii of Dwarfs and Subgiants with Kepler and Gaia
We test asteroseismic radii of Kepler main-sequence and subgiant stars by
deriving their parallaxes which are compared with those of the first Gaia data
release. We compute radii based on the asteroseismic scaling relations as well
as by fitting observed oscillation frequencies to stellar models for a subset
of the sample, and test the impact of using effective temperatures from either
spectroscopy or the infrared flux method. An offset of 3%, showing no
dependency on any stellar parameters, is found between seismic parallaxes
derived from frequency modelling and those from Gaia. For parallaxes based on
radii from the scaling relations, a smaller offset is found on average;
however, the offset becomes temperature dependent which we interpret as
problems with the scaling relations at high stellar temperatures. Using the
hotter infrared flux method temperature scale, there is no indication that
radii from the scaling relations are inaccurate by more than about 5%. Taking
the radii and masses from the modelling of individual frequencies as reference
values, we seek to correct the scaling relations for the observed temperature
trend. This analysis indicates that the scaling relations systematically
overestimate radii and masses at high temperatures, and that they are accurate
to within 5% in radius and 13% in mass for main-sequence stars with
temperatures below 6400 K. However, further analysis is required to test the
validity of the corrections on a star-by-star basis and for more evolved stars.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Toward the Jamming Threshold of Sphere Packings: Tunneled Crystals
We have discovered a new family of three-dimensional crystal sphere packings
that are strictly jammed (i.e., mechanically stable) and yet possess an
anomalously low density. This family constitutes an uncountably infinite number
of crystal packings that are subpackings of the densest crystal packings and
are characterized by a high concentration of self-avoiding "tunnels" (chains of
vacancies) that permeate the structures. The fundamental geometric
characteristics of these tunneled crystals command interest in their own right
and are described here in some detail. These include the lattice vectors (that
specify the packing configurations), coordination structure, Voronoi cells, and
density fluctuations. The tunneled crystals are not only candidate structures
for achieving the jamming threshold (lowest-density rigid packing), but may
have substantially broader significance for condensed matter physics and
materials science.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
