Apparent stratospheric ozone loss rate over Eureka in 1994/95, 1995/96, and 1996/97 inferred from ECC ozonesonde observations
Many ECC-type ozonesondes were launched at the Canadian Arctic Eureka observatory(80°N , 86°W ), one of the most northern stations in the Arctic, during winters from 1993/94 to 2001/02, and the temporal evolutions of the vertical ozone profiles were obtained in detail. The lower stratospheric temperature over Eureka was very low inside the polar vortex and the largest ozone loss was observed in 1999/2000, as reported in a previous paper. Similarly, Eureka was often or persistently inside the vortex in the lower stratosphere(around the 470K isentropic surface level) in the winters of 1994/95, 1995/96, and 1996/97. Very low temperatures were observed inside the vortex in the lower stratosphere over Eureka, as indicated by detection of PSCs by Mie lidar. Observations of tracers(N_2O, total reactive nitrogen species(NOy), and others) inside the vortex during these winters using an ER-2 aircraft and balloons indicated that the effect of air parcel mixing across the vortex edge was minimal, based on the tracer-tracer relationship(e.g., Y. Kondo et al.; J. Geophys. Res., 104D, 8215, 1999). Therefore, significant decreases of the in-travortex ozone mixing ratio in the lower stratosphere were considered to be chemical ozone losses due to chlorine activation of PSCs following diabatic descent. The apparent ozone loss rate inside the vortex over Eureka was estimated for each year. The rates ranged from 0.01 to 0.03ppmv/day, less than that observed in 1999/2000(0.04ppmv/day). The observations were conducted at a single station; however, the apparent ozone loss rate over Eureka inside the vortex each year agrees with loss rates obtained in other studies
The 1991 WMO ozone sonde intercomparison
The WMO ozone sonde intercomparison was held at Vanscoy, Saskatchewan from May 13 to May 24, 1991. The purpose of the intercomparison is to evaluate the performance of various ozone sonde types used operationally in the Global Ozone Observing System and to ensure that the accuracy and precision of the measurements are sufficient to detect long-term trends in stratospheric ozone. The intercomparison was sponsored by WMO and hosted by the Atmospheric Environment Service (AES) of Canada. It was attended by scientists from six countries: Canada, Finland, Germany, India, Japan and USA. A total of 10 balloon payloads were launched each carrying 7 or 8 sondes for a total of 67 successful ozone sonde flights. The payloads were carried to altitudes between 35 and 40 km where the flights terminated by balloon burst. Results of the profile measurements made during the series of the profile measurements made during the series of flight are used to determine statistically meaningful evaluations of the different sonde types. A description of the payload and the different ozone sondes is given. Preliminary results of the profile measurements and an evaluation of the performance of the sonde types are presented
The first trimester human trophoblast cell line ACH-3P: A novel tool to study autocrine/paracrine regulatory loops of human trophoblast subpopulations – TNF-α stimulates MMP15 expression
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The trophoblast compartment of the placenta comprises various subpopulations with distinct functions. They interact among each other by secreted signals thus forming autocrine or paracrine regulatory loops. We established a first trimester trophoblast cell line (ACH-3P) by fusion of primary human first trimester trophoblasts (week 12 of gestation) with a human choriocarcinoma cell line (AC1-1).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Expression of trophoblast markers (cytokeratin-7, integrins, matrix metalloproteinases), invasion abilities and transcriptome of ACH-3P closely resembled primary trophoblasts. Morphology, cytogenetics and doubling time was similar to the parental AC1-1 cells. The different subpopulations of trophoblasts e.g., villous and extravillous trophoblasts also exist in ACH-3P cells and can be immuno-separated by HLA-G surface expression. HLA-G positive ACH-3P display pseudopodia and a stronger expression of extravillous trophoblast markers. Higher expression of insulin-like growth factor II receptor and human chorionic gonadotropin represents the basis for the known autocrine stimulation of extravillous trophoblasts.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We conclude that ACH-3P represent a tool to investigate interaction of syngeneic trophoblast subpopulations. These cells are particularly suited for studies into autocrine and paracrine regulation of various aspects of trophoblast function. As an example a novel effect of TNF-α on matrix metalloproteinase 15 in HLA-G positive ACH-3P and explants was found.</p
Towards mid-position based Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy using online magnetic resonance imaging guidance for central lung tumours
Background and purpose: Central lung tumours can be treated by magnetic resonance (MR)-guided radiotherapy. Complications might be reduced by decreasing the Planning Target Volume (PTV) using mid-position (midP)-based planning instead of Internal Target Volume (ITV)-based planning. In this study, we aimed to verify a method to automatically derive patient-specific PTV margins for midP-based planning, and show dosimetric robustness of midP-based planning for a 1.5T MR-linac. Materials and methods: Central(n = 12) and peripheral(n = 4) central lung tumour cases who received 8x7.5 Gy were included. A midP-image was reconstructed from ten phases of the 4D-Computed Tomography using deformable image registration. The Gross Tumor Volume (GTV) was delineated on the midP-image and the PTV margin was automatically calculated based on van Herk's margin recipe, treating the standard deviation of all Deformation Vector Fields, within the GTV, as random error component. Dosimetric robustness of midP-based planning for MR-linac using automatically derived margins was verified by 4D dose-accumulation. MidP-based plans were compared to ITV-based plans. Automatically derived margins were verified with manually derived margins. Results: The mean D95% target coverage in GTV + 2 mm was 59.9 Gy and 62.0 Gy for midP- and ITV-based central lung plans, respectively. The mean lung dose was significantly lower for midP-based treatment plans (difference:-0.3 Gy; p<0.042). Automatically derived margins agreed within one millimeter with manually derived margins. Conclusions: This retrospective study indicates that mid-position-based treatment plans for central lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy yield lower OAR doses compared to ITV-based treatment plans on the MR-linac. Patient-specific GTV-to-PTV margins can be derived automatically and result in clinically acceptable target coverage
Observation of the Charmed Baryon at CLEO
The CLEO experiment at the CESR collider has used 13.7 fb of data to
search for the production of the (css-ground state) in

Observation of and
We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of mesons into the
final states phi K and phi K^*. Using 9.7 million pairs collected
with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays B- -> phi K- and B0 -> phi K*0
with the following branching fractions: BR(B- -> phi K-)=(5.5 +2.1-1.8 +- 0.6)
x 10^{-6} and BR(B0 -> phi K*0)=(11.5 +4.5-3.7 +1.8-1.7) x 10^{-6}. We also see
evidence for the decays B0 -> phi K0 and B- -> phi K*-. However, since the
statistical significance is not overwhelming for these modes we determine upper
limits of <12.3 x 10^{-6} and <22.5 x 10^{-6} (90% C.L.) respectively.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through

Evidence of New States Decaying into
Using 13.7 of data recorded by the CLEO detector at CESR, we report
evidence for two new charmed baryons: one decaying into
with the subsequent decay , and its
isospin partner decaying into followed by

for the two states: =318.2+-1.3+-2.9 MeV,
and =324.0+-1.3+-3.0 MeV. We interpret
these new states as the particles, the charmed-strange
analogs of the .Comment: 10 pages postscript, also available through

Measurement of the Relative Branching Fraction of to Charged and Neutral B-Meson Pairs
We analyze 9.7 x 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded with the CLEO detector to
determine the production ratio of charged to neutral B-meson pairs produced at
the Y(4S) resonance. We measure the rates for B^0 -> J/psi K^{(*)0} and B^+ ->
J/psi K^{(*)+} decays and use the world-average B-meson lifetime ratio to
extract the relative widths f+-/f00 = Gamma(Y(4S) -> B+B-)/Gamma(Y(4S) ->
B0\bar{B0}) = = 1.04 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.04(syst). With the assumption that
f+- + f00 = 1, we obtain f00 = 0.49 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.01(syst) and f+- =
0.51 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.01(syst). This production ratio and its uncertainty
apply to all exclusive B-meson branching fractions measured at the Y(4S)
resonance.Comment: 11 pages postscript, also available through

First Observation of the Decays and B^{0}\to D^{*-}p\bar{n}$
We report the first observation of exclusive decays of the type B to D^* N
anti-N X, where N is a nucleon. Using a sample of 9.7 times 10^{6} B-Bbar pairs
collected with the CLEO detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage
Ring, we measure the branching fractions B(B^0 \to D^{*-} proton antiproton
\pi^+) = ({6.5}^{+1.3}_{-1.2} +- 1.0) \times 10^{-4} and B(B^0 \to D^{*-}
proton antineutron) = ({14.5}^{+3.4}_{-3.0} +- 2.7) times 10^{-4}. Antineutrons
are identified by their annihilation in the CsI electromagnetic calorimeter.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through

Study of the Decays B0 --> D(*)+D(*)-
The decays B0 --> D*+D*-, B0 --> D*+D- and B0 --> D+D- are studied in 9.7
million Y(4S) --> BBbar decays accumulated with the CLEO detector. We determine
Br(B0 --> D*+D*-) = (9.9+4.2-3.3+-1.2)e-4 and limit Br(B0 --> D*+D-) < 6.3e-4
and Br(B0 --> D+D-) < 9.4e-4 at 90% confidence level (CL). We also perform the
first angular analysis of the B0 --> D*+D*- decay and determine that the
CP-even fraction of the final state is greater than 0.11 at 90% CL. Future
measurements of the time dependence of these decays may be useful for the
investigation of CP violation in neutral B meson decays.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
