    Sustainability Standards and Stakeholder Engagement: Lessons From Carbon Markets

    Stakeholders play an increasingly active role in private governance, including development of standards for measuring sustainability. Building on prior studies focused on standards and stakeholder engagement, we use an innovation management theoretical lens to compare stakeholder engagement and standards developed in two carbon markets: the Climate Action Reserve and the U.N.’s Clean Development Mechanism. We develop and test hypotheses regarding how different processes of stakeholder engagement in standard development affect the number, identity, and age of stakeholders involved, as well as the variation and quality of the resulting standards. In doing so, we contribute to the growing literature on stakeholder engagement in developing sustainability standards

    The German joint research project Verbmobil (VM) aims at the development of a speech to speech translation system. This paper reports on research done in our group which belongs to Verbmobil's subproject on system architectures (TP15).     Model dependence of lateral distribution functions of high energy cosmic ray air showers

    The influence of high and low energy hadronic models on lateral distribution functions of cosmic ray air showers for Auger energies is explored. A large variety of presently used high and low energy hadron interaction models are analysed and the resulting lateral distribution functions are compared. We show that the slope depends on both the high and low energy hadronic model used. The models are confronted with available hadron-nucleus data from accelerator experiments

    Different methods to define utility functions yield different results and engage different neural processes

    Although the concept of utility is fundamental to many economic theories, up to now a generally accepted method determining a subject’s utility function is not available. We investigated two methods that are used in economic sciences for describing utility functions by using response-locked event-related potentials in order to assess their neural underpinnings. For defining the certainty equivalent (CE), we used a lottery game with probabilities of 0.5, for identifying the subjects’ utility functions directly a standard bisection task was applied. Although the lottery tasks’ payoffs were only hypothetical, a pronounced negativity was observed resembling the error related negativity (ERN) previously described in action monitoring research, but this occurred only for choices far away from the indifference point between money and lottery. By contrast, the bisection task failed to evoke an ERN irrespective of the responses’ correctness. Based on these findings we are reasoning that only decisions made in the lottery task achieved a level of subjective relevance that activates cognitive-emotional monitoring. In terms of economic sciences, our findings support the view that the bisection method is unaffected by any kind of probability valuation or other parameters related to risk and in combination with the lottery task can, therefore, be used to differentiate between payoff and probability valuation.Utility function; neuroeconomics; error-related negativity; executive functions; cognitive electrophysiology; lottery,bisection

    Electronic excitation of transition metal nitrides by light ions with keV energies

    We investigated the specific electronic energy deposition by protons and He ions with keV energies in different transition metal nitrides of technological interest. Data were obtained from two different time-of-flight ion scattering setups and show excellent agreement. For protons interacting with light nitrides, i.e. TiN, VN and CrN, very similar stopping cross sections per atom were found, which coincide with literature data of N2 gas for primary energies <= 25 keV. In case of the chemically rather similar nitrides with metal constituents from the 5th and 6th period, i.e. ZrN and HfN, the electronic stopping cross sections were measured to exceed what has been observed for molecular N2 gas. For He ions, electronic energy loss in all nitrides was found to be significantly higher compared to the equivalent data of N2 gas. Additionally, deviations from velocity proportionality of the observed specific electronic energy loss are observed. A comparison with predictions from density functional theory for protons and He ions yields a high apparent efficiency of electronic excitations of the target for the latter projectile. These findings are considered to indicate the contributions of additional mechanisms besides electron hole pair excitations, such as electron capture and loss processes of the projectile or promotion of target electrons in atomic collisions

    Maritime field studies: methods for exploring seafarers’ physical activity

    In order to determine the health status of seafarers, questionnaires are frequently applied or medical/ /psychological examinations conducted ashore, for example, in the form of medical fitness examinations or simulator training. In such a survey design, the occupational influences and the individual reaction cannot be ascertained. However, these aspects are especially important in the maritime context as employees on board are often exposed to the typical shipping-related stressors in the workplace for many months, both during working hours and during leisure time. In particular, it is assumed that working on board requires a high level of physical effort. Therefore, an exploration of occupational stress and strain, particularly the assessment of the seafarers’ physical activity, should preferably be carried out in a comprehensive and realistic way in a maritime field study, i.e. an on-the-job survey directly on board
