Local party members’ views are associated, but not completely congruent, with local constituency opinion
Do local political party members reflect the views of voters in their constituencies? Since candidate selection by local party members is the most common form of candidate selection in the United Kingdom, it is important to understand local party members’ views, and how those views relate to views in the local area. We investigate the degree to which individual members’ views match local opinion by combining the results of a large-scale survey of party members in the United Kingdom with estimates of local opinion created using multilevel regression and post-stratification. We find that individual party members’ views are moderately to strongly associated with local opinion on both left-right and liberty-authority dimensions. Even so, party members are not entirely congruent with opinion in the local area, having opinions which are either to the left or right of voters in their local area, and which are uniformly more liberal than party supporters
What makes for prize-winning television?
We investigate the determinants of success in four international television awards festivals between 1994 and 2012. We find that countries with larger markets and greater expenditure on public broadcasting tend to win more awards, but that the degree of concentration in the market for television and rates of penetration of pay-per-view television are unrelated to success. These findings are consistent with general industrial organisation literature on quality and market size, and with media policy literature on public service broadcasting acting as a force for quality. However, we also find that ‘home countries’ enjoy a strong advantage in these festivals, which is not consistent with festival success acting as a pure proxy for television quality
Judicial disagreement need not be political: dissent on the Estonian Supreme Court
I investigate the non-unanimous decisions of judges on the Estonian Supreme Court. I argue that since judges on the court enjoy high de jure independence, dissent frequently, and are integrated in the normal judicial hierarchy, the Estonian Supreme Court is a crucial case for the presumption that judicial disagreement reveals policy preferences. I analyse dissenting opinions using an ideal point response model. Examining the characteristics of cases which discriminated with respect to the recovered dimension, I show that this dimension cannot be interpreted as a meaningful policy dimension, but instead reflects disagreement about the proper scope of constitutional redress
Media pluralism: What matters for governance and regulation?
Media pluralism is valued in most jurisdictions because it contributes to a well-informed citizenry. The authors examine what media policy and regulatory levers appear to affect five types of citizen knowledge across the European Union. They conclude that concentration of titles matters more than ownership in newsprint; and that neither type of concentration matters in broadcasting in the same way, but the regulatory regime for public service broadcasting does, particularly for political knowledge
ADMX-Orpheus First Search for 70 eV Dark Photon Dark Matter: Detailed Design, Operations, and Analysis
Dark matter makes up 85% of the matter in the universe and 27% of its energy
density, but we don't know what comprises dark matter. It is possible that dark
matter may be composed of either axions or dark photons, both of which can be
detected using an ultra-sensitive microwave cavity known as a haloscope. The
haloscope employed by ADMX consists of a cylindrical cavity operating at the
TM mode and is sensitive to the QCD axion with masses of few eV.
However, this haloscope design becomes challenging to implement for higher
masses. This is because higher masses require smaller-diameter cavities,
consequently reducing the detection volume which diminishes the detected signal
power. ADMX-Orpheus mitigates this issue by operating a tunable,
dielectrically-loaded cavity at a higher-order mode, allowing the detection
volume to remain large. This paper describes the design, operation, analysis,
and results of the inaugural ADMX-Orpheus dark photon search between 65.5
eV (15.8 GHz) and 69.3 eV (16.8 GHz), as well as future directions

Search for 70 \mu eV Dark Photon Dark Matter with a Dielectrically-Loaded Multi-Wavelength Microwave Cavity
Microwave cavities have been deployed to search for bosonic dark matter
candidates with masses of a few eV. However, the sensitivity of these
cavity detectors is limited by their volume, and the traditionally-employed
half-wavelength cavities suffer from a significant volume reduction at higher
masses. ADMX-Orpheus mitigates this issue by operating a tunable,
dielectrically-loaded cavity at a higher-order mode, which allows the detection
volume to remain large. The ADMX-Orpheus inaugural run excludes dark photon
dark matter with kinetic mixing angle between 65.5 eV
(15.8 GHz) and 69.3 eV (16.8GHz), marking the highest-frequency tunable

Paraoxonase 2 protein is spatially expressed in the human placenta and selectively reduced in labour
Humans parturition involves interaction of hormonal, neurological, mechanical stretch and inflammatory pathways and the placenta plays a crucial role. The paraoxonases (PONs 1–3) protect against oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation, modulation of endoplasmic reticulum stress and regulation of apoptosis. Nothing is known about the role of PON2 in the placenta and labour. Since PON2 plays a role in oxidative stress and inflammation, both features of labour, we hypothesised that placental PON2 expression would alter during labour. PON2 was examined in placentas obtained from women who delivered by cesarean section and were not in labour and compared to the equivalent zone of placentas obtained from women who delivered vaginally following an uncomplicated labour. Samples were obtained from 12 sites within each placenta: 4 equally spaced apart pieces were sampled from the inner, middle and outer placental regions. PON2 expression was investigated by Western blotting and real time PCR. Two PON2 forms, one at 62 kDa and one at 43 kDa were found in all samples. No difference in protein expression of either isoform was found between the three sites in either the labour or non-labour group. At the middle site there was a highly significant decrease in PON2 expression in the labour group when compared to the non-labour group for both the 62 kDa form (p = 0.02) and the 43 kDa form (p = 0.006). No spatial differences were found within placentas at the mRNA level in either labour or non-labour. There was, paradoxically, an increase in PON2 mRNA in the labour group at the middle site only. This is the first report to describe changes in PON2 in the placenta in labour. The physiological and pathological significance of these remains to be elucidated but since PON2 is anti-inflammatory further studies are warranted to understand its role
