Challenges and Opportunities in the Introduction of a Tertiary Education Program in Regional South Australia: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This paper explores the implementation of a Bachelor of Education program in regional South Australia. Using a case study approach, this paper describes the site of implementation, with attention paid to the challenges regional locations experience in attracting and retaining suitably qualified staff. It will explore the program model and consider the challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation and sustainability. At the individual level, it has provided students with an additional study option that negates the costs and stresses of relocation. At an organisational and community level, there is benefit for local schools as the provision of students and future professionals, who already have demonstrated commitment to the region, may assist in reducing staff turnover. The model presented could be adapted to similar locations, and while it is not a panacea to address regional teaching staff shortages, it offers another educational model that can help alleviate the issue

Guests experiences of Maytree during and after their stay

    Get PDF
In 2012, researchers from the University of East London and the Tavistock Clinic published the results of a project aimed at assessing how guests experienced their stay at Maytree and how it impacted on them after leaving. The study found that a large majority of guests felt less suicidal during their stay and for months afterwards. Furthermore, many guests felt their stay was 'transformational', indicating that Maytree had a significant and powerful impact which led them to reappraise their lives

The Terminology Use and Diagnostic Approaches of Paediatric Speech and Language Therapists in the UK

In recent years, the field of speech and language therapy has highly critiqued the existence of a vast number of diagnostic terms, all referring to paediatric language diagnoses. Substantive scholarly discussion has addressed the negative consequences of terminological inconsistency, including poor public awareness, underfunding of research and compromised lobbying efforts. Whilst many terms are used across research literature, there is no empirical evidence to show the diagnostic terminology used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) in clinical contexts. Although speculated, it is also unclear as to why variation may exist and persist, despite efforts to resolve it. The current study takes a mixed methods approach, supported by dialectical critical realism, to identify the terms used to denote speech, language and fluency diagnoses by SLTs in the UK. It also examines the underpinning reasons and investigates the clinical diagnostic process. A survey of SLTs (n=374) revealed which terms are commonly used in UK clinical practice. Associations between the use of terms and eight clinician-related factors (e.g. geographical location and workplace characteristics) were measured using chi-square testing. Semi-structured interviews sought the perspectives of 22 SLTs regarding their terminology use and diagnostic processes. The summation of both stages indicate that terminological consistency is a shared goal across the profession, but the nature of clinical practice poses substantial challenges to this. Interviewees reported taking an individualised approach to diagnosis with each client and adapting terms to meet the needs of families; however, this is not compatible with overall consistency. Participants disclosed barriers in their diagnostic practice such as limited clinical time, low public understanding of diagnostic terminology and the challenges of working with the highly varied needs of families. The confidence of SLTs to make diagnoses was generally low, resulting in alternative strategies to diagnosis being employed -such as the use of descriptions and colloquial terms. The impact and potential disparities associated with individualising terminology are considered and recommendations are made to support clinicians in their diagnostic practice

The East Coast Basin is a petroliferous region and therefore of interest for petroleum exploration, however, further detailed mapping and sedimentological research is needed to have a better appreciation of the reservoir potential of the basin. Mapped geological boundaries are inferred based on broad tectonic features and structures, and little sedimentology has been undertaken. The current geological understanding is that this area contains a succession of Late Cretaceous (70 Ma) to Late Miocene (~5 Ma) sandstone, limestone, marl, flysch and mudstone facies. Few potential reservoir units are mapped or received detailed analysis and source rock has been an ongoing enigma due to known oil and gas seeps but low Total Organic Content results in most previously studied samples. The purpose of this research is to produce a high- resolution 1:25 000 geological map and undertake biostratigraphical, petrological, structural and paleo-environmental studies to help differentiate the Miocene aged geology of the area. Findings indicate the area is structurally complex with many faults, folds, including the Akitio Syncline, and local unconformities. Within the stratigraphic sequences identified both macro and micro fauna provide depositional environment and age control. Sedimentological and petrographic analysis of the major units also indicate variability in depositional environments from abyssal to shallow marine. Key areas have been located to provide accurate ages throughout the depositional sequence. This project will contribute to current research on the petroleum reservoir potential of the East Coast Basin
