Multivariate Generalizations of the Multiplicative Binomial Distribution: Introducing the MM Package
We present two natural generalizations of the multinomial and multivariate binomial distributions, which arise from the multiplicative binomial distribution of Altham (1978). The resulting two distributions are discussed and we introduce an R package, MM, whichincludes associated functionality
History-sensitive versus future-sensitive approaches to security in distributed systems
We consider the use of aspect-oriented techniques as a flexible way to deal
with security policies in distributed systems. Recent work suggests to use
aspects for analysing the future behaviour of programs and to make access
control decisions based on this; this gives the flavour of dealing with
information flow rather than mere access control. We show in this paper that it
is beneficial to augment this approach with history-based components as is the
traditional approach in reference monitor-based approaches to mandatory access
control. Our developments are performed in an aspect-oriented coordination
language aiming to describe the Bell-LaPadula policy as elegantly as possible.
Furthermore, the resulting language has the capability of combining both
history- and future-sensitive policies, providing even more flexibility and

Casimir micro-sphere diclusters and three-body effects in fluids
Our previous article [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 060401 (2010)] predicted that
Casimir forces induced by the material-dispersion properties of certain
dielectrics can give rise to stable configurations of objects. This phenomenon
was illustrated via a dicluster configuration of non-touching objects
consisting of two spheres immersed in a fluid and suspended against gravity
above a plate. Here, we examine these predictions from the perspective of a
practical experiment and consider the influence of non-additive, three-body,
and nonzero-temperature effects on the stability of the two spheres. We
conclude that the presence of Brownian motion reduces the set of experimentally
realizable silicon/teflon spherical diclusters to those consisting of layered
micro-spheres, such as the hollow- core (spherical shells) considered here.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
Prevention programmes for children of problem drinkers: a review
It is well established that children of problem drinkers have an increased risk of developing mental health problems, including drinking and drug misuse problems, depression, eating disorders, conduct disorders, and delinquency. However, compared to the hundreds of studies that have examined the effects of parental problem drinking on their children, the genetics of problem drinking, and the physical and mental problems of these children, it is disappointing that so few studies have explored the possibilities of prevention. Despite all the research on children of problem drinkers, we have no usable operationalizations of what problem drinking is, or when a child can be defined as a child of a problem drinker. Furthermore, no valid screening or severity assessment instruments are available; there is no solution for the ethical dilemma of the need to involve parents while these parents are at the same time the problem; very few theory-driven prevention programmes have been developed; very little is known about protective factors that could be the focus of prevention programmes; and we have no programmes that can be considered to be ‘evidence based’. This paper describes these problems, presents an overview of the prevention research in this area, and gives some directions for future research

Mr. Hankin, a partner practicing intellectual property law in the Los Angeles Office of Gordon & Rees, LLP and the Chair of the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law\u27s Committee on the Draft Hague Convention, comments on the Dreyfuss-Ginsburg proposal and its tension with current legal procedural norms and the Draft Hague Convention. Hankin argues that intellectual property law should not be treated differently procedurally from other forms of law and, accordingly, should not be subject to a special convention on procedure. Moreover, Hankin disagrees with the Dreyfuss-Ginsburg proposal\u27s likely exclusion of patent litigation ( hard IP ) from its scope. Such an exclusion is unnecessary and would limit the proposal\u27s applicability. The Draft Hague Convention benefits from not distinguishing between hard and soft intellectual property, and while the Hague Convention still faces many challenges, directing our efforts towards improving it is the best way to address the increasingly complex issues affecting international intellectual property law

The Fundamental Diagram of Pedestrian Movement Revisited
The empirical relation between density and velocity of pedestrian movement is
not completely analyzed, particularly with regard to the `microscopic' causes
which determine the relation at medium and high densities. The simplest system
for the investigation of this dependency is the normal movement of pedestrians
along a line (single-file movement). This article presents experimental results
for this system under laboratory conditions and discusses the following
observations: The data show a linear relation between the velocity and the
inverse of the density, which can be regarded as the required length of one
pedestrian to move. Furthermore we compare the results for the single-file
movement with literature data for the movement in a plane. This comparison
shows an unexpected conformance between the fundamental diagrams, indicating
that lateral interference has negligible influence on the velocity-density
relation at the density domain . In addition we test a
procedure for automatic recording of pedestrian flow characteristics. We
present preliminary results on measurement range and accuracy of this method.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
Long-lived photoexcited states in polydiacetylenes with different molecular and supramolecular organization
With the aim of determining the importance of the molecular and supramolecular organization on the excited states of polydiacetylenes, we have studied the photoinduced absorption spectra of the red form of poly[1,6-bis(3,6-didodecyl-N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD-S) and the results compared with those of the blue form of the same polymer. An interpretation of the data is given in terms of both the conjugation length and the interbackbone separation also in relation to the photoinduced absorption spectra of both blue and red forms of poly[1,6-bis(N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD), which does not carry the alkyl substituents on the carbazolyl side groups. Information on the above properties is derived from the analysis of the absorption and Raman spectra of this class of polydiacetylenes
Mental Health of Parents and Life Satisfaction of Children: A Within-Family Analysis of Intergenerational Transmission of Well-Being
This paper addresses the extent to which there is an intergenerational transmission of mental health and subjective well-being within families. Specifically it asks whether parents’ own mental distress influences their child’s life satisfaction, and vice versa. Whilst the evidence on daily contagion of stress and strain between members of the same family is substantial, the evidence on the transmission between parental distress and children’s well-being over a longer period of time is sparse. We tested this idea by examining the within-family transmission of mental distress from parent to child’s life satisfaction, and vice versa, using rich longitudinal data on 1,175 British youths. Results show that parental distress at year t-1 is an important determinant of child’s life satisfaction in the current year. This is true for boys and girls, although boys do not appear to be affected by maternal distress levels. The results also indicated that the child’s own life satisfaction is related with their father’s distress levels in the following year, regardless of the gender of the child. Finally, we examined whether the underlying transmission correlation is due to shared social environment, empathic reactions, or transmission via parent-child interaction
