Spitzer Science Center within an Enterprise Architecture
The Spitzer Science Centerās (SSC) evolutionary development
approach, coupled with a flexible, scaleable hardware and software architecture has been key in Spitzerās ability to handle an explosion of data products, evolving data definitions, and changing data quality requirements. Spitzer is generating (depending on the campaign and instrument) about 10 TB of pre-archive data every 14 to 20 days. This generally reduces to between 3 TB and 6 TB of
standard products, again depending on the campaign and instrument. This paper will discuss (1) the Spitzer Science Centerās responses to evolving data, quality, and processing requirements and (2) how robust or not was the original architecture to allow Spitzer to accommodate on-going change
First Steps Toward Change in Teacher Preparation for Elementary Science
Unless introductory undergraduate science classes for prospective elementary teachers actively incorporate the philosophy of inquiry-based learning called for in K-l2 science education refom little will change in elementary science education. Thus, at James Madison University, we have developed a new integrated science core curriculum called Understanding our World [1]. This course sequence was not only designed to fulļ¬ll general education science requirements. but also to focus on content areas our students will need to know as teachers. The objectives of these courses are based on the National Science Education Standards and Virginiaās Science Standards of Learning, including earth and space science, chemistry, physics, life sciences, and environmental science [2,3]. As an integrated package, this course sequence addresses basic science content, calculation skills, the philosophy and history of science, the process of how science is done, the role of science in society, and applications of computers and technology in science. Keeping in mind that students tend to teach in the same way they were taught, Understanding our World core classes embrace the concepts associated with reform in elementary math and science
Fully Bayesian Forecasts with Evidence Networks
Sensitivity forecasts inform the design of experiments and the direction of
theoretical efforts. We argue that to arrive at representative results Bayesian
forecasts should marginalize their conclusions over uncertain parameters and
noise realizations rather than picking fiducial values. However, this is
computationally infeasible with current methods. We thus propose a novel
simulation-based forecasting methodology, which we find to be capable of
providing expedient rigorous forecasts without relying on restrictive
assumptions.Comment: 5 pages + references, 1 figure. Submitted to PR
Stolen Wages in the Nation's Capital: Fixing DC's Broken Wage Theft Claims Process
Today in the District of Columbia ("the District" or "DC"), low wage workers are being shortchanged. Policies currently in place make it very difficult, to nearly impossible, for victims of wage theft to hold employers accountable for failing to pay wages owed. The Wage Theft Prevention Act of 2014, co-introduced on February 4, 2014 by Councilmembers Vincent Orange, Jim Graham, and Mary Cheh, would provide needed accountability and stronger protections to ensure that those working an honest day receive honest pay for their labor. This document provides an introduction to the current barriers affecting workers in the District, and presents an overview of the ways in which the Wage Theft Prevention Act of 2014 would ameliorate these problems; thereby making the District a better place for workers and responsible businesses
