    Lower Complexity Bounds of Finite-Sum Optimization Problems: The Results and Construction

    The contribution of this paper includes two aspects. First, we study the lower bound complexity for the minimax optimization problem whose objective function is the average of nn individual smooth component functions. We consider Proximal Incremental First-order (PIFO) algorithms which have access to gradient and proximal oracle for each individual component. We develop a novel approach for constructing adversarial problems, which partitions the tridiagonal matrix of classical examples into nn groups. This construction is friendly to the analysis of incremental gradient and proximal oracle. With this approach, we demonstrate the lower bounds of first-order algorithms for finding an ε\varepsilon-suboptimal point and an ε\varepsilon-stationary point in different settings. Second, we also derive the lower bounds of minimization optimization with PIFO algorithms from our approach, which can cover the results in \citep{woodworth2016tight} and improve the results in \citep{zhou2019lower}

    Stochastic Distributed Optimization under Average Second-order Similarity: Algorithms and Analysis

    We study finite-sum distributed optimization problems involving a master node and n1n-1 local nodes under the popular δ\delta-similarity and μ\mu-strong convexity conditions. We propose two new algorithms, SVRS and AccSVRS, motivated by previous works. The non-accelerated SVRS method combines the techniques of gradient sliding and variance reduction and achieves a better communication complexity of O~(n+nδ/μ)\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(n {+} \sqrt{n}\delta/\mu) compared to existing non-accelerated algorithms. Applying the framework proposed in Katyusha X, we also develop a directly accelerated version named AccSVRS with the O~(n+n3/4δ/μ)\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(n {+} n^{3/4}\sqrt{\delta/\mu}) communication complexity. In contrast to existing results, our complexity bounds are entirely smoothness-free and exhibit superiority in ill-conditioned cases. Furthermore, we establish a nearly matched lower bound to verify the tightness of our AccSVRS method.Comment: Camera-ready version for NeurIPS 202

    The reaction of [W(CH)Br(CO)2(dcpe)] (dcpe = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane) with tBuLi and SiCl4 affords the trichlorosilyl ligated neopentylidyne complex [W(CtBu)(SiCl3)(CO)2(dcpe)].     Correlation between systemic inflammatory response index and thyroid function: 2009-2012 NHANES results

    AimsThis study investigates the relationship between the Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) and thyroid function.MethodsUtilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2012, we excluded participants lacking SIRI or thyroid function data, those under 20 years, and pregnant individuals. SIRI was determined using blood samples. We conducted weighted multivariate regression and subgroup analyses to discern the independent relationship between SIRI and thyroid function.ResultsThe study included 1,641 subjects, with an average age of 47.26±16.77 years, including 48.65% males and 51.35% females. The population was divided into three SIRI-based groups (Q1-Q3). Q3, compared to Q1, exhibited higher age-at-onset, greater male prevalence, and increased levels of FT3, FT4, TT4, leukocytes, and triglycerides. This group also showed a higher incidence of diabetes, hypertension, and smoking. Notably, Q1 had lower LDL and HDL levels. SIRI maintained a positive association with FT4 (β = 0.01, 95% CI = 0.00-0.03, P for trend = 0.0071), TT4 (β = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.10, 0.31, P for trend=0.0001), and TPOAb (β = 8.0, 95% CI = 1.77-14.30, P for trend = 0.0120), indicating that each quartile increase in SIRI corresponded to a 0.01 ng/dL increase in FT4, a 0.2 g/dL increase in TT4, and an 8.03 IU/mL rise in TPOAb. The subgroup analysis suggested the SIRI-thyroid function correlation was influenced by hypertension.ConclusionInflammation may impact the development and progression of thyroid function disorders. Proactive anti-inflammatory treatment might mitigate thyroid abnormalities

Hong Zhou)教授为该论文的共同通讯作者。【Abstract】Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a medically important human herpesvirus that causes chickenpox and shingles, but its cell-associated nature has hindered structure studies. Here we report the cryo-electron microscopy structures of purified VZV A-capsid and C-capsid, as well as of the DNA-containing capsid inside the virion. Atomic models derived from these structures show that, despite enclosing a genome that is substantially smaller than those of other human herpesviruses, VZV has a similarly sized capsid, consisting of 955 major capsid protein (MCP), 900 small capsid protein (SCP), 640 triplex dimer (Tri2) and 320 triplex monomer (Tri1) subunits. The VZV capsid has high thermal stability, although with relatively fewer intra- and inter-capsid protein interactions and less stably associated tegument proteins compared with other human herpesviruses. Analysis with antibodies targeting the N and C termini of the VZV SCP indicates that the hexon-capping SCP—the largest among human herpesviruses—uses its N-terminal half to bridge hexon MCP subunits and possesses a C-terminal flexible half emanating from the inner rim of the upper hexon channel into the tegument layer.     Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Identification of Adulteration of Flaxseed Oil From QINGHAI Area Using GC–MS Profiling of Phytosterol Composition and Chemometrics

    Flaxseed oil is an important source of vegetable oil with a polyunsaturated fatty acid. It is significant to establish a method to quickly identify adulterated flaxseed oil. In the present study, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytosterol of flaxseed oil from different varieties and different production areas in the Qinghai area was first performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and the phytosterol standard profile of flaxseed oil was established. Then, a combination of similarity evaluation and cluster analysis was used to distinguish pure flaxseed oil from flaxseed oil adulterated with concentrations of 10–50% rapeseed oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, and sesame oil, and discriminant analysis was used to identify the types of adulterated flaxseed oil. The results showed that similarity evaluation combined with cluster analysis can distinguish pure and adulterated flaxseed oil when the concentration of the adulterant was greater than 10%. Discriminant analysis models accurately identified the types of adulterating oil in flaxseed oil when the concentration of rapeseed, peanut, or sunflower oil was greater than 20%, and that of sesame oil was greater than 30%.
