    The quasi-molecular stage of ternary fission

    We developed a three-center phenomenological model,able to explain qualitatively the recently obtained experimental results concerning the quasimolecular stage of a light-particle accompanied fission process. It was derived from the liquid drop model under the assumption that the aligned configuration, with the emitted particle between the light and heavy fragment, is reached by increasing continuously the separation distance, while the radii of the heavy fragment and of the light particle are kept constant. In such a way,a new minimum of a short-lived molecular state appears in the deformation energy at a separation distance very close to the touching point. This minimum allows the existence of a short-lived quasi-molecular state, decaying into the three final fragments.The influence of the shell effects is discussed. The half-lives of some quasimolecular states which could be formed in the 10^{10}Be and 12^{12}C accompanied fission of 252^{252}Cf are roughly estimated to be the order of 1 ns, and 1 ms, respectively

    Information and Multi-Period Optimal Income Taxation with Government Commitment

    The optimal income taxation problem has been extensively studied in one- period models. When consumers work for many periods, this paper analyzes what information, if any, that the government learns about abilities in one period can be used in later periods to attain more redistribution than in a one- period world. liken the government must commit itself to future tax schedules, the gains cane from relaxing self-selection constraints by intertemporal nonstationarity. The effect of nonstationarity is analogous to that of randomization in one-period models. In a model with two ability classes it is shown that the key use of information is that only a single lifetime self-selection constraint for each type of consumer must be imposed. Sane necessary and sufficient conditions for randomization or nonstationarity are given. The planner can make additional use of the information when individual and social rates of time discounting differ. In this case, the limiting tax schedule is a nondistorting one if the government has a lower discount rate than individuals.

    East Java: Cenozoic basins, volcanoes and ancient basement

    East Java on land is divided here into four broadly EW zones: (1) the Southern Mountains Zone, an Eocene to Miocene volcanic arc, separated by (2) the present-day volcanic arc from (3) the Kendeng Zone which was the main Cenozoic depocentre in onshore East Java; and to the north (4) the Rembang Zone which represents the edge of the Sunda Shelf. Several synthems separated by unconformities can be identified and correlated between the different zones. There is a regional angular unconformity above Upper Cretaceous and older basement. The oldest rocks above the unconformity range from Mid Eocene to Lower Oligocene and record a gradual transgression and, in SE Java, an increase in volcanic material up-section.After an intra-Oligocene sea-level fall, volcanic material from the arc dominated in the Southern Mountains and Kendeng Zones while in the Rembang Zone carbonate deposition continued. In the Early Miocene, activity in the Southern Mountains Volcanic Arc culminated in a major eruptive phase at 20 Ma ± 1 Ma, similar in scale to the Pleistocene eruptions of Toba. To the north carbonate deposition was interrupted by clastic input containing reworked basement and Eocene material. The Mid Miocene was a period of reworking and carbonate sedimentation. In the Late Miocene volcanic activity recommenced at the position of the present-day arc and there was a series of deformation events throughout East Java. Volcanism has played an important role in the development of East Java, providing a source of material and contributing to subsidence by flexural loading. Provenance studies and dating of zircons provide insight into the basement character and suggest that continental crust of Gondwana (possibly Western Australian) origin lies beneath part of the Southern Mountains Zone. It is suggested that continental Sundaland provided very little, if any, terrigenous material to East Java in the Cenozoic

Species chinensis is not synonymous with Sundasciurus philippinensis, as has been suggested, nor is it a member of the Oriental tribe Callosciurini. It is instead a member of the primarily Holarctic and Neotropical tribe Sciurini. Although the Sciurini have one member that occupies a relict range in the Oriental region (Reithrosciurus macrotis in Borneo), it sems unlikely that chinensis is another such Oriental species of which the range, except for being allegedly in China, remains entirely unknown. The chinensis material is believed to represent the South American genus genus Guerlinguetus. The specimen B.M. No. 70a seems to represent some geographic variation of ingrami. The pelage of the specimen B.M. No. 70b has not been adequately reported upon, but apparently it could represent some other Guerlinguetus"--P. 6-7

    Gene response profiles for Daphnia pulex exposed to the environmental stressor cadmium reveals novel crustacean metallothioneins

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Genomic research tools such as microarrays are proving to be important resources to study the complex regulation of genes that respond to environmental perturbations. A first generation cDNA microarray was developed for the environmental indicator species <it>Daphnia pulex</it>, to identify genes whose regulation is modulated following exposure to the metal stressor cadmium. Our experiments revealed interesting changes in gene transcription that suggest their biological roles and their potentially toxicological features in responding to this important environmental contaminant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our microarray identified genes reported in the literature to be regulated in response to cadmium exposure, suggested functional attributes for genes that share no sequence similarity to proteins in the public databases, and pointed to genes that are likely members of expanded gene families in the <it>Daphnia </it>genome. Genes identified on the microarray also were associated with cadmium induced phenotypes and population-level outcomes that we experimentally determined. A subset of genes regulated in response to cadmium exposure was independently validated using quantitative-realtime (Q-RT)-PCR. These microarray studies led to the discovery of three genes coding for the metal detoxication protein metallothionein (MT). The gene structures and predicted translated sequences of <it>D. pulex </it>MTs clearly place them in this gene family. Yet, they share little homology with previously characterized MTs.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The genomic information obtained from this study represents an important first step in characterizing microarray patterns that may be diagnostic to specific environmental contaminants and give insights into their toxicological mechanisms, while also providing a practical tool for evolutionary, ecological, and toxicological functional gene discovery studies. Advances in <it>Daphnia </it>genomics will enable the further development of this species as a model organism for the environmental sciences.</p

    The diagnosis of colorectal cancer in patients with symptoms: finding a needle in a haystack

    Patients often see primary care physicians with symptoms that might signal colorectal cancer but are also common in adults without cancer. Physicians and patients must then make a difficult decision about whether and how aggressively to evaluate the symptom. Favoring referral is that missed diagnoses lead to unnecessary testing, prolonged uncertainty, and continuing symptoms; also, the physician will suffer chagrin. It is not clear that diagnostic delay leads to progression to a more advanced stage. Against referral is that proper evaluation includes colonoscopy, with attendant inconvenience, discomfort, cost, and risk. The article by Hamilton et al, published this month in BMC Medicine, provides strong estimates of the predictive value of the various symptoms and signs of colorectal cancer and show how much higher predictive values are with increasing age and male sex. Unfortunately, their results also make clear that most colorectal cancers present with symptoms with low predictive values, < 1.2%. Models that include a set of predictive variables, that is, risk factors, age, sex, screening history, and symptoms, have been developed to guide primary prevention and clinical decision-making and are more powerful than individual symptoms and signs alone. Although screening for colorectal cancer is increasing in many countries, cancers will still be found outside screening programs so primary care physicians will remain at the front line in the difficult task of distinguishing everyday symptoms from life-threatening cancer
