Spin Dynamics and Orbital State in LaTiO_3

A neutron scattering study of the Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO3_{3} (TN=132_{{\rm N}}=132 K) reveals a spin wave spectrum that is well described by a nearest-neighbor superexchange constant J=15.5J=15.5 meV and a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (D=1.1D=1.1 meV). The nearly isotropic spin wave spectrum is surprising in view of the absence of a static Jahn-Teller distortion that could quench the orbital angular momentum, and it may indicate strong orbital fluctuations. A resonant x-ray scattering study has uncovered no evidence of orbital order in LaTiO3_{3}.Comment: final version, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3946 (2000

Quantum memory for photons: I. Dark state polaritons

An ideal and reversible transfer technique for the quantum state between light and metastable collective states of matter is presented and analyzed in detail. The method is based on the control of photon propagation in coherently driven 3-level atomic media, in which the group velocity is adiabatically reduced to zero. Form-stable coupled excitations of light and matter (``dark-state polaritons'') associated with the propagation of quantum fields in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency are identified, their basic properties discussed and their application for quantum memories for light analyzed.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, paragraph on photon echo adde

Proposal for measurment of harmonic oscillator Berry phase in ion traps

    Get PDF
We propose a scheme for measuring the Berry phase in the vibrational degree of freedom of a trapped ion. Starting from the ion in a vibrational coherent state we show how to reverse the sign of the coherent state amplitude by using a purely geometric phase. This can then be detected through the internal degrees of freedom of the ion. Our method can be applied to preparation of Schr\"odinger cat states.Comment: Replaced with revised versio

Older Babies - More Active Mothers? How Maternal Labor Supply Changes as the Child Grows

Female labor market activity is dependent on the presence and the age of a child, but how do the determinants develop in magnitude and significance with the child's age? Using German SOEP data from 1991 to 2006 for mothers with young children, the change in maternal labor supply when the child is one, two, and three years old is explicitly addressed. According to the tobit regression results for precise working hours, maternal labor supply becomes increasingly responsive to economic incentives - mainly to imputed wages - as the child grows

Slow Light Propagation in a Thin Optical Fiber via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

    Get PDF
We propose a novel configuration that utilizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) to tailor a fiber mode propagating inside a thin optical fiber and coherently control its dispersion properties to drastically reduce the group velocity of the fiber mode. The key to this proposal is: the evanescent-like field of the thin fiber strongly couples with the surrounding active medium, so that the EIT condition is met by the medium. We show how the properties of the fiber mode is modified due to the EIT medium, both numerically and analytically. We demonstrate that the group velocity of the new modified fiber mode can be drastically reduced (approximately 44 m/sec) using the coherently prepared orthohydrogen doped in a matrix of parahydrogen crystal as the EIT medium.Comment: 10 pages in two column RevTex4, 6 Figure

Electron--Vibron Interactions and Berry Phases in Charged Buckminsterfullerene: Part I

A simple model for electron-vibron interactions on charged buckminsterfullerene C60n−_{60}^{n-}, n=1,
5n=1,\ldots 5, is solved both at weak and strong couplings. We consider a single HgH_g vibrational multiplet interacting with t1ut_{1u} electrons. At strong coupling the semiclassical dynamical Jahn-Teller theory is valid. The Jahn-Teller distortions are unimodal for nn=1,2,4,5 electrons, and bimodal for 3 electrons. The distortions are quantized as rigid body pseudo--rotators which are subject to geometrical Berry phases. These impose ground state degeneracies and dramatically change zero point energies. Exact diagonalization shows that the semiclassical level degeneracies and ordering survive well into the weak coupling regime. At weak coupling, we discover an enhancement factor of 5/25/2 for the pair binding energies over their classical values. This has potentially important implications for superconductivity in fullerides, and demonstrates the shortcoming of Migdal--Eliashberg theory for molecular crystals.Comment: 29 pages (+7 figures, 3 available upon request), LATEX, report-number: BM515

The Inositol 5-Phosphatase dOCRL Controls PI(4,5)P2 Homeostasis and Is Necessary for Cytokinesis

SummaryDuring cytokinesis, constriction of an equatorial actomyosin ring physically separates the two daughter cells. At the cleavage furrow, the phosphoinositide PI(4,5)P2 plays an important role by recruiting and regulating essential proteins of the cytokinesis machinery [1]. Accordingly, perturbation of PI(4,5)P2 regulation leads to abortive furrowing and binucleation [2–4]. To determine how PI(4,5)P2 is regulated during cytokinesis, we individually knocked down each of the enzymes controlling the phosphoinositide (PIP) cycle in Drosophila. We show that depletion of the Drosophila ortholog of human oculocerebrorenal syndrome of Lowe 1 (OCRL1), an inositol 5-phosphatase mutated in the X-linked disorder oculocerebrorenal Lowe syndrome, triggers a high rate of cytokinesis failure. In absence of dOCRL, several essential components of the cleavage furrow were found to be incorrectly localized on giant cytoplasmic vacuoles rich in PI(4,5)P2 and in endocytic markers. We demonstrate that dOCRL is associated with endosomes and that it dephosphorylates PI(4,5)P2 on internal membranes to restrict this phosphoinositide at the plasma membrane and thereby regulates cleavage furrow formation and ingression. Identification of dOCRL as essential for cell division may be important to understand the molecular basis of the phenotypic manifestations of Lowe syndrome

Geometric phases of mesoscopic spin in Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a possible scheme for generating spin-J geometric phases using a coupled two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). First we show how to observe the standard Berry phase using Raman coupling between two hyperfine states of the BEC. We find that the presence of intrinsic interatomic collisions creates degeneracy in energy that allows implementation of the non-Abelian geometric phases as well. The evolutions produced can be used to produce interference between different atomic species with high numbers of atoms or to fine control the difference in atoms between the two species. Finally, we show that errors in the standard Berry phase due to elastic collisions may be corrected by controlling inelastic collisions between atoms.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

Stable mode-locked pulses from mid-infrared semiconductor lasers

    Get PDF
We report the unequivocal demonstration of mid-infrared mode-locked pulses from a semiconductor laser. The train of short pulses was generated by actively modulating the current and hence the optical gain in a small section of an edge-emitting quantum cascade laser (QCL). Pulses with pulse duration at full-width-at-half-maximum of about 3 ps and energy of 0.5 pJ were characterized using a second-order interferometric autocorrelation technique based on a nonlinear quantum well infrared photodetector. The mode-locking dynamics in the QCLs was modelled and simulated based on Maxwell-Bloch equations in an open two-level system. We anticipate our results to be a significant step toward a compact, electrically-pumped source generating ultrashort light pulses in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral ranges.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure

Geometric phases for generalized squeezed coherent states

    Get PDF
A simple technique is used to obtain a general formula for the Berry phase (and the corresponding Hannay angle) for an arbitrary Hamiltonian with an equally-spaced spectrum and appropriate ladder operators connecting the eigenstates. The formalism is first applied to a general deformation of the oscillator involving both squeezing and displacement. Earlier results are shown to emerge as special cases. The analysis is then extended to multiphoton squeezed coherent states and the corresponding anholonomies deduced.Comment: 15 page
