The Algebras of Large N Matrix Mechanics
Extending early work, we formulate the large N matrix mechanics of general
bosonic, fermionic and supersymmetric matrix models, including Matrix theory:
The Hamiltonian framework of large N matrix mechanics provides a natural
setting in which to study the algebras of the large N limit, including
(reduced) Lie algebras, (reduced) supersymmetry algebras and free algebras. We
find in particular a broad array of new free algebras which we call symmetric
Cuntz algebras, interacting symmetric Cuntz algebras, symmetric
Bose/Fermi/Cuntz algebras and symmetric Cuntz superalgebras, and we discuss the
role of these algebras in solving the large N theory. Most important, the
interacting Cuntz algebras are associated to a set of new (hidden) local
quantities which are generically conserved only at large N. A number of other
new large N phenomena are also observed, including the intrinsic nonlocality of
the (reduced) trace class operators of the theory and a closely related large N
field identification phenomenon which is associated to another set (this time
nonlocal) of new conserved quantities at large N.Comment: 70 pages, expanded historical remark
Are There Any Type 2 QSOs? The Case of AXJ0341.4-4453
The X-ray source AXJ0341.4-4453 was described by Boyle et al. as a Type 2 AGN
at z = 0.672 based on the absence of broad emission lines in the observed
wavelength range 4000-7000 Angstroms. We obtained a new spectrum of
AXJ0341.4-4453 extending to 9600 Angstroms which reveals broad Balmer lines and
other characteristics of Seyfert 1 galaxies. The FWHM of broad H-beta is at
least 1600 km/s, while [O III]5007 has FWHM = 730 km/s. The flux ratio [O
III]5007/H-beta = 1. Thus, AXJ0341.4-4453 is by definition a narrow-line
Seyfert 1 galaxy, or perhaps a moderately reddened Seyfert 1 galaxy, but it is
not a Type 2 QSO. Although examples of the latter have long been sought,
particularly in connection with the problem of the X-ray background, there is
still virtually no evidence for the existence of any Type 2 QSO among X-ray

Vertex Operators in 2K Dimensions
A formula is proposed which expresses free fermion fields in 2K dimensions in
terms of the Cartan currents of the free fermion current algebra. This leads,
in an obvious manner, to a vertex operator construction of nonabelian free
fermion current algebras in arbitrary even dimension. It is conjectured that
these ideas may generalize to a wide class of conformal field theories.Comment: Minor change in notation. Change in references
Asymptotic Search for Ground States of SU(2) Matrix Theory
We introduce a complete set of gauge-invariant variables and a generalized
Born-Oppenheimer formulation to search for normalizable zero-energy asymptotic
solutions of the Schrodinger equation of SU(2) matrix theory. The asymptotic
method gives only ground state candidates, which must be further tested for
global stability. Our results include a set of such ground state candidates,
including one state which is a singlet under spin(9).Comment: 51 page
X-ray Observations and Infrared Identification of the Transient 7.8 s X-ray Binary Pulsar XTE J1829-098
XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the transient 7.8 s pulsar XTE
J1829-098 are used to characterize its pulse shape and spectrum, and to
facilitate a search for an optical or infrared counterpart. In outburst, the
absorbed, hard X-ray spectrum with Gamma = 0.76+/-0.13 and N_H = (6.0+/-0.6) x
10^{22} cm^{-2} is typical of X-ray binary pulsars. The precise Chandra
localization in a faint state leads to the identification of a probable
infrared counterpart at R.A. = 18h29m43.98s, decl. = -09o51'23.0" (J2000.0)
with magnitudes K=12.7, H=13.9, I>21.9, and R>23.2. If this is a highly
reddened O or B star, we estimate a distance of 10 kpc, at which the maximum
observed X-ray luminosity is 2x10^{36} ergs s^{-1}, typical of Be X-ray
transients or wind-fed systems. The minimum observed luminosity is
3x10^{32}(d/10 kpc)^2 ergs s^{-1}. We cannot rule out the possibility that the
companion is a red giant. The two known X-ray outbursts of XTE J1829-098 are
separated by ~1.3 yr, which may be the orbital period or a multiple of it, with
the neutron star in an eccentric orbit. We also studied a late M-giant
long-period variable that we found only 9" from the X-ray position. It has a

The Ultraviolet Spectra of Active Galaxies With Double-Peaked Emission Lines
We present the results of UV spectroscopy of AGNs with double-peaked Balmer
emission lines. In 2/3 of the objects, the far-UV resonance lines are strong,
with single-peaked profiles resembling those of Seyfert galaxies. The Mg II
line is the only UV line with a double-peaked profile. In the remaining
objects, the far-UV resonance lines are relatively weak but still
single-peaked. The latter group also displays prominent UV absorption lines,
indicative of a low-ionization absorber. We interpret the difference in the
profiles of the emission lines as resulting from two different regions: a
dense, low-ionization accretion disk (the predominant source of the Balmer and
Mg II lines), and a lower density, higher-ionization wind (the predominant
source of the far-UV resonance lines). These results suggest a way of
connecting the double-peaked emitters with the greater AGN population: in
double-peaked emitters the accretion rate onto the black hole is low, making
the wind feeble and allowing the lines from the underlying disk to shine
through. This scenario also implies that in the majority of AGNs, the wind is

The Rapidly Fading Optical Afterglow of GRB 980519
GRB 980519 had the most rapidly fading of the well-documented GRB afterglows,
consistent with t^{-2.05 +/- 0.04} in BVRI as well as in X-rays during the two
days in which observations were made. We report VRI observations from the MDM
1.3m and WIYN 3.5m telescopes, and we synthesize an optical spectrum from all
of the available photometry. The optical spectrum alone is well fitted by a
power law of the form nu^{-1.20 +/- 0.25}, with some of the uncertainty due to
the significant Galactic reddening in this direction. The optical and X-ray
spectra together are adequately fitted by a single power law nu^{-1.05 +/-
0.10}. This combination of steep temporal decay and flat broad-band spectrum
places a severe strain on the simplest afterglow models involving spherical
blast waves in a homogeneous medium. Instead, the rapid observed temporal decay
is more consistent with models of expansion into a medium of density n(r)
proportional to r^{-2}, or with predictions of the evolution of a jet after it
slows down and spreads laterally. The jet model would relax the energy
requirements on some of the more extreme GRBs, of which GRB 980519 is likely to
be an example because of its large gamma-ray fluence and faint host galaxy.Comment: 13 pages, submitted to ApJ Letter
Clinical management of smoking cessation: patient factors affecting a reward-based approach
Although the majority of current smokers indicate they would like to quit, only about half of smokers make a quit attempt each year. Of those who attempt to quit, only about 5% are successful. Many effective products and programs are available to assist in smoking cessation; however those interested in quitting often do not make use of these resources. To increase use of cessation products in order to improve successful cessation rates, the Consumer Demand Roundtable has argued that smokers need to be viewed as consumers of cessation products rather than as patients needing treatment. With this consumer-based approach in mind, the current review examines how participant characteristics, perceptions, and behavior influence, and are influenced by, contingency management (CM) paradigms in various settings. Findings suggest that participant factors associated with success in these programs include demographic characteristics (eg, gender, marital status), self-efficacy, motivation to quit, and impulsivity. Overall, participants perceive incentives for successful cessation as motivating. However, such programs may involve greater withdrawal symptoms (eg, craving for cigarettes) initially, but these symptoms tend to decrease at a greater rate over time compared with nonincentive group participants. CM programs have also been shown to be successful across a number of settings (eg, communities, schools), including settings in which smokers are often considered difficult to treat (eg, substance abuse treatment centers). Overall, CM programs are perceived positively by participants and can increase rates of successful cessation. Furthermore, CM interventions have the flexibility to adapt to individual preferences and needs, leading to greater participation and likelihood of successful cessation. Thus, CM provides an important framework for addressing the need for consumer-focused smoking cessation interventions
