Weak force detection using a double Bose-Einstein condensate
A Bose-Einstein condensate may be used to make precise measurements of weak
forces, utilizing the macroscopic occupation of a single quantum state. We
present a scheme which uses a condensate in a double well potential to do this.
The required initial state of the condensate is discussed, and the limitations
on the sensitivity due to atom collisions and external coupling are analyzed.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, Eq.(41) has been correcte
Boundary of two mixed Bose-Einstein condensates
The boundary of two mixed Bose-Einstein condensates interacting repulsively
was considered in the case of spatial separation at zero temperature.
Analytical expressions for density distribution of condensates were obtained by
solving two coupled nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations in cases corresponding
weak and strong separation. These expressions allow to consider excitation
spectrum of a particle confined in the vicinity of the boundary as well as
surface waves associated with surface tension.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Testing Broken U(1) Symmetry in a Two-Component Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensate
We present a scheme for determining if the quantum state of a small trapped
Bose-Einstein condensate is a state with well defined number of atoms, a Fock
state, or a state with a broken U(1) gauge symmetry, a coherent state. The
proposal is based on the observation of Ramsey fringes. The population
difference observed in a Ramsey fringe experiment will exhibit collapse and
revivals due to the mean-field interactions. The collapse and revival times
depend on the relative strength of the mean-field interactions for the two
components and the initial quantum state of the condensate.Comment: 20 Pages RevTex, 3 Figure
Spin dynamics of a trapped spin-1 Bose Gas above the Bose-Einstein transition temperature
We study collective spin oscillations in a spin-1 Bose gas above the
Bose-Einstein transition temperature. Starting from the Heisenberg equation of
motion, we derive a kinetic equation describing the dynamics of a thermal gas
with the spin-1 degree of freedom. Applying the moment method to the kinetic
equation, we study spin-wave collective modes with dipole symmetry. The dipole
modes in the spin-1 system are found to be classified into the three type of
modes. The frequency and damping rate are obtained as functions of the peak
density. The damping rate is characterized by three relaxation times associated
with collisions.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figur
Dynamically turning off interactions in a two component condensate
We propose a mechanism to change the interaction strengths of a two component
condensate. It is shown that the application of pi/2 pulses allows to alter the
effective interspecies interaction strength as well as the effective
interaction strength between particles of the same kind. This mechanism
provides a simple method to transform spatially stable condensates into
unstable once and vice versa. It also provides a means to store a squeezed spin
state by turning off the interaction for the internal states and thus allows to
gain control over many body entangled states.Comment: 7 pages 5 figures, symbols changed, minor changes, to appear in Phys.

Condensate fluctuations in finite Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature
A Langevin equation for the complex amplitude of a single-mode Bose-Einstein
condensate is derived. The equation is first formulated phenomenologically,
defining three transport parameters. It is then also derived microscopically.
Expressions for the transport parameters in the form of Green-Kubo formulas are
thereby derived and evaluated for simple trap geometries, a cubic box with
cyclic boundary conditions and an isotropic parabolic trap. The number
fluctuations in the condensate, their correlation time, and the
temperature-dependent collapse-time of the order parameter as well as its
phase-diffusion coefficient are calculated.Comment: 29 pages, Revtex, to appear in Phys.Rev.
Macroscopic Quantum Fluctuations in the Josephson Dynamics of Two Weakly Linked Bose-Einstein Condensates
We study the quantum corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for two
weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. The goals are: 1) to investigate
dynamical regimes at the borderline between the classical and quantum behaviour
of the bosonic field; 2) to search for new macroscopic quantum coherence
phenomena not observable with other superfluid/superconducting systems. Quantum
fluctuations renormalize the classical Josephson oscillation frequencies. Large
amplitude phase oscillations are modulated, exhibiting collapses and revivals.
We describe a new inter-well oscillation mode, with a vanishing (ensemble
averaged) mean value of the observables, but with oscillating mean square
fluctuations. Increasing the number of condensate atoms, we recover the
classical Gross-Pitaevskii (Josephson) dynamics, without invoking the
symmetry-breaking of the Gauge invariance.Comment: Submitte
Ground state and elementary excitations of single and binary Bose-Einstein condensates of trapped dipolar gases
We analyze the ground-state properties and the excitation spectrum of
Bose-Einstein condensates of trapped dipolar particles. First, we consider the
case of a single-component polarized dipolar gas. For this case we discuss the
influence of the trapping geometry on the stability of the condensate as well
as the effects of the dipole-dipole interaction on the excitation spectrum. We
discuss also the ground state and excitations of a gas composed of two
antiparallel dipolar components.Comment: 12 pages, 9 eps figures, final versio
Fertility, Living Arrangements, Care and Mobility
There are four main interconnecting themes around which the contributions in this book are based. This introductory chapter aims to establish the broad context for the chapters that follow by discussing each of the themes. It does so by setting these themes within the overarching demographic challenge of the twenty-first century – demographic ageing. Each chapter is introduced in the context of the specific theme to which it primarily relates and there is a summary of the data sets used by the contributors to illustrate the wide range of cross-sectional and longitudinal data analysed
Quantum dynamics and thermalization for out-of-equilibrium phi^4-theory
The quantum time evolution of \phi^4-field theory for a spatially homogeneous
system in 2+1 space-time dimensions is investigated numerically for
out-of-equilibrium initial conditions on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym
equations including the tadpole and sunset self-energies. Whereas the tadpole
self-energy yields a dynamical mass, the sunset self-energy is responsible for
dissipation and an equilibration of the system. In particular we address the
dynamics of the spectral (`off-shell') distributions of the excited quantum
modes and the different phases in the approach to equilibrium described by
Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relations for thermal equilibrium states. The
investigation explicitly demonstrates that the only translation invariant
solutions representing the stationary fixed points of the coupled equation of
motions are those of full thermal equilibrium. They agree with those extracted
from the time integration of the Kadanoff-Baym equations in the long time
limit. Furthermore, a detailed comparison of the full quantum dynamics to more
approximate and simple schemes like that of a standard kinetic (on-shell)
Boltzmann equation is performed. Our analysis shows that the consistent
inclusion of the dynamical spectral function has a significant impact on
relaxation phenomena. The different time scales, that are involved in the
dynamical quantum evolution towards a complete thermalized state, are discussed
in detail. We find that far off-shell 1 3 processes are responsible for
chemical equilibration, which is missed in the Boltzmann limit. Finally, we
address briefly the case of (bare) massless fields. For sufficiently large
couplings we observe the onset of Bose condensation, where our scheme
within symmetric \phi^4-theory breaks down.Comment: 77 pages, 26 figure
