Shot noise in diffusive ferromagnetic metals
We show that shot noise in a diffusive ferromagnetic wire connected by tunnel
contacts to two ferromagnetic electrodes can probe the intrinsic density of
states and the extrinsic impurity scattering spin-polarization contributions in
the polarization of the wire conductivity. The effect is more pronounced when
the electrodes are perfectly polarized in opposite directions. While in this
case the shot noise has a weak dependence on the impurity scattering
polarization, it is strongly affected by the polarization of the density of
states. For a finite spin-flip scattering rate the shot noise increases well
above the normal state value and can reach the full Poissonian value when the
density of states tends to be perfectly polarized. For the parallel
configuration we find that the shot noise depends on the relative sign of the
intrinsic and the extrinsic polarizations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Anomalous Hall Effect in three ferromagnets: EuFe4Sb12, Yb14MnSb11, and Eu8Ga16Ge30
The Hall resistivity (Rho_xy), resistivity (Rho_xx), and magnetization of
three metallic ferromagnets are investigated as a function of magnetic field
and temperature. The three ferromagnets, EuFe4Sb12 (Tc = 84 K), Yb14MnSb11 (Tc
= 53 K), and Eu8Ga16Ge30 (Tc = 36 K) are Zintl compounds with carrier
concentrations between 1 x 10^21 cm^-3 and 3.5 x 10^21 cm^-3. The relative
decrease in Rho_xx below Tc [Rho_xx(Tc)/Rho_xx(2 K)] is 28, 6.5, and 1.3 for
EuFe4Sb12, Yb14MnSb11, and Eu8Ga16Ge30 respectively. The low carrier
concentrations coupled with low magnetic anisotropies allow a relatively clean
separation between the anomalous (Rho_'xy), and normal contributions to the
measured Hall resistivity. For each compound the anomalous contribution in the
zero field limit is fit to alpha Rho_xx + sigma_xy rho_xx^2 for temperatures T
< Tc. The anomalous Hall conductivity, sigma_xy, is -220 +- 5 (Ohm^-1 cm^-1),
-14.7 +- 1 (Ohm^-1 cm^-1), and 28 +- 3 (Ohm^-1 cm^-1) for EuFe4Sb12,
Yb14MnSb11, and Eu8Ga16Ge30 respectively and is independent of temperature for
T < Tc if the change in spontaneous magnetization (order parameter) with
temperature is taken into account. These data are consistent with recent
theories of the anomalous Hall effect that suggest that even for stochiometric
ferromagnetic crystals, such as those studied in this article, the intrinsic
Hall conductivity is finite at T = 0, and is a ground state property that can

Semirelativistic stability of N-boson systems bound by 1/r pair potentials
We analyze a system of self-gravitating identical bosons by means of a
semirelativistic Hamiltonian comprising the relativistic kinetic energies of
the involved particles and added (instantaneous) Newtonian gravitational pair
potentials. With the help of an improved lower bound to the bottom of the
spectrum of this Hamiltonian, we are able to enlarge the known region for
relativistic stability for such boson systems against gravitational collapse
and to sharpen the predictions for their maximum stable mass.Comment: 11 pages, considerably enlarged introduction and motivation,

In a recent paper [1] (also at http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/0803.3721), I made
several critical remarks on a 'Hermitian time operator' proposed by Galapon [2]
(also at http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0111061).
Galapon has correctly pointed out that remarks pertaining to 'denseness' of
the commutator domain are wrong [3]. However, the other remarks still apply,
and it is further noted that a given quantum system can be a member of this
domain only at a set of times of total measure zero.Comment: 3 page
Are Americans confident their ballots are counted?
Building on the literature that investigates citizen and voter trust in government, we analyze the topic of voter confidence in the American electoral process. Our data comes from two national telephone surveys where voters were asked the confidence they have that their vote for president in the 2004 election was recorded as intended. We present preliminary evidence that suggests confidence in the electoral process affects voter turnout. We then examine voter responses to determine the overall level of voter confidence and analyze the characteristics that influence the likelihood a voter is confident that their ballot was recorded accurately. Our analyses indicate significant differences in the level of voter confidence along both racial and partisan lines. Finally, we find voter familiarity with the electoral process, opinions about the electoral process in other voting precincts, and both general opinions about voting technology and the specific technology the voter uses significantly affect the level of voter confidence
