Bounded Concurrent Timestamp Systems Using Vector Clocks

Shared registers are basic objects used as communication mediums in asynchronous concurrent computation. A concurrent timestamp system is a higher typed communication object, and has been shown to be a powerful tool to solve many concurrency control problems. It has turned out to be possible to construct such higher typed objects from primitive lower typed ones. The next step is to find efficient constructions. We propose a very efficient wait-free construction of bounded concurrent timestamp systems from 1-writer multireader registers. This finalizes, corrects, and extends, a preliminary bounded multiwriter construction proposed by the second author in 1986. That work partially initiated the current interest in wait-free concurrent objects, and introduced a notion of discrete vector clocks in distributed algorithms.Comment: LaTeX source, 35 pages; To apper in: J. Strange Half Metals and Mott Insulators in SYK Models

We study a dual flavor fermion model where each of the flavors form a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) system with arbitrary and possibly distinct qq-body interactions. The crucial new element is an arbitrary all-to-all rr-body interaction between the two flavors. At high temperatures the model shows a strange metal phase where both flavors are gapless, similar to the usual single flavor SYK model. Upon reducing temperature, the coupled system undergoes phase transitions to previously unseen phases - first, a strange half metal (SHM) phase where one flavor remains a strange metal while the other is gapped, and, second, a Mott insulating phase where both flavors are gapped. At a fixed low temperature we obtain transitions between these phases by tuning the relative fraction of sites for each flavor. We discuss the physics of these phases and the nature of transitions between them. This work provides an example of an instability of the strange metal with potential to provide new routes to study strongly correlated systems through the rich physics contained in SYK like models.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Equity as a question of decorum and manners: conscience as vision

    Get PDF
This paper argues for a re-evaluation of the manner in which conscience is used by equity lawyers. Debates by early modern humanists sought an alignment between conscience and public office. Indeed, conscience had very little to do with the private morals or private compunction of the Chancellor. Rather, conscience was implicated at the level of duty, honestas and dignity. It required stricter attention to the metaphysics of public official conduct. In these terms, conscience was a humanist re-evaluation of a classical idea that gave heavier emphasis to the poesis of vision

    Mesopotamia: myth and reality

Was there a myth relating to the state in ancient Mesopotamia? There were several complexes of such myth. An example of this is Hammurabi, the king of Babylonian dynasty who extended Babylon’s control throughout Mesopotamia. His most important reform was Marduk's rise to a position as the chief deity of the whole kingdom. Whether or not the Epic of Creation obtained its final literary form in the reign of Hammurabi is a question, which is not easily answered. There is sufficient evidence of the main features of Marduk's character before Hammurabi's reign, but quite another question is that of the literary process. In any case, Marduk's position as the chief deity of the realm coincided with Hammurabi's adopting the feudal system of administration. In the Ur III period, as we have seen, the early system still prevailed, and the earlier city states continued their existence, although as provinces of the unity. This system was continued in the period of the Isin and Larsa dynasties. In the reign of Shamshi-Adad of Asshur, at any rate, we meet with a typical feudal system, as is evident, for instance, from his correspondence with his son Yasmah-Adad, viceroy of Mari. This system implies that the king considered himself the possessor of the ground, particularly such as belonged to the temples, and its products as well

The Changing Facets of Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibilities in India and their Interrelationship

CG and CSR can be described as two sides of the same coin. Better governance leads the corporates to behave responsibly for the wellbeing of all the stakeholders. CSR is the medium through which corporates address the large group of stakeholders. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) moving far ahead from its age old domain of philanthropy and charity has now reached to a new hallmark of Corporate responsiveness and action to social issues and demand for sustainability in order to advance further towards a new era of collective future action for factoring the sustainable business strategy for good governance and development of the society and its people. The recent changing in the laws in India related to CSR and CG practices in India triggers this study to determine the relationship between them and also measure the influence of governance attributes on CSR practices of Indian corporates. The BSE SENSEX companies in India are the leaders in good governance practices and also the flag bearers in carrying out major CSR activities even when the CSR was not mandatory in India. The influence of corporate board attributes like Board Size, Board independent, Chairman-CEO duality, Female representative in corporate board, multiple directorships, and Promoter and directors shareholding on Corporate Social Responsibility measured through multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that chairman-CEO duality and the present of female directors in corporate board significantly influence of CSR contribution. Before generalization of the result of study further research could be undertaken taking a large group of Indian companies and wider corporate governance variables
