Density Discontinuity of a Neutron Star and Gravitational Waves

    Get PDF
We calculate quasi-normal f- and g-modes of a neutron star with density discontinuity, which may appear in a phase transition at extreme high density. We find that discontinuity will reflect largely on the f-mode, and that the g-mode could also be important for a less massive star.Comment: REVTeX,18 pages, 8 figure

Mechanism of Cloud Cavitation Generation on a 2-D Hydrofoil

When a sheet cavity on a hydrofoil section attains a certain size, it starts violent periodical oscillation shedding a harmful cloud cavity downstream at each oscillation cycle. This phenomenon is due to the occurrence of the re-entrant jet. In this paper, the behavior of the re-entrant jet was observed in detail using a transparent foil section model and a high-speed video camera. Time variation of pressure distribution on the foil was measured simultaneously. It was found that the re-entrant jet can start at any point in sheet cavity elongating stage. Even two re-entrant jets can appear in one cycle. When a re-entrant jet is generated upstream, the jet velocity is lower compared to the case when a re-entrant jet is generated downstream. The jet velocity is almost constant at the value determined by the location of the generation. As a result, the cavity oscillation cycle becomes constant when it is normalized by the sheet cavity surface velocity and the maximum sheet cavity length. The jet velocity is calculated from the pressure gradient at the sheet cavity T.E., using a simple theoretical model. The calculated jet velocity agrees with the measurement, showing that the jet velocity increases as its generation point shifts downstream. It is possible that pressure gradient at the sheet cavity T.E. is the driving force of re-entrant jet

Ginsparg-Wilson Dirac operator in the monopole backgrounds on the fuzzy 2-sphere

In the previous papers, we studied the 't Hooft-Polyakov (TP) monopole configurations in the U(2) gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere,and showed that they have nonzero topological charge in the formalism based on the Ginsparg-Wilson (GW) relation. In this paper, we will show an index theorem in the TP monopole background, which is defined in the projected space, and provide a meaning of the projection operator. We also extend the index theorem to general configurations which do not satisfy the equation of motion, and show that the configuration space can be classified into the topological sectors. We further calculate the spectrum of the GW Dirac operator in the TP monopole backgrounds, and consider the index theorem in these cases.Comment: Latex2e, 37 pages, 3 figure

    Regioselective photoalkylation of 2-cyano-6-methoxynaphthalene by methoxy-substituted 1,2-diarylcyclopropanes

金沢大学理工研究域物質化学系Photoreactions of 2-cyano-6-methoxynaphthalene with methoxy-substituted 1,2-diarylcyclopropanes in benzene give 2-cyano-1-(1,3-diarylpropyl)-6-methoxynaphthalenes. The excellent regioselectivity seen in these processes can be explained by initial formation of singlet exciplexes, in which the dipoles of each component are oriented in opposite directions. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Effect of low-dose human atrial natriuretic peptide on postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing pulmonary resection for lung cancer: A double-blind, placebo-controlled study

ObjectivesWe previously reported that patients with preoperative B-type natriuretic peptide levels of 30 pg/mL or more have increased risk of postoperative atrial fibrillation after pulmonary resection. This study evaluated the effects of human atrial natriuretic peptide on postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing pulmonary resection for lung cancer.MethodsA prospective, randomized study was conducted with 40 patients who had preoperative elevated B-type natriuretic peptide (≥30 pg/mL) and underwent a scheduled pulmonary resection for lung cancer. Results were compared between patients who received low-dose human atrial natriuretic peptide and those who received a placebo. The primary end point was the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation during the first 4 days after surgery.ResultsThe incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation was significantly lower in the human atrial natriuretic peptide group than in the placebo group (10% vs 60%; P < .001). Patients in the human atrial natriuretic peptide group also showed significantly lower white blood cell counts and C-reactive protein levels after surgery.ConclusionsContinuous infusion of low-dose human atrial natriuretic peptide during lung cancer surgery had a prophylactic effect against postoperative atrial fibrillation after pulmonary resection in patients with preoperative elevation of B-type natriuretic peptide levels. A larger sample size is needed to establish the safety and efficacy of this intervention

Origin of Thermal and Non-Thermal Hard X-ray Emission from the Galactic Center

We analyse new results of Chandra and Suzaku which found a flux of hard X-ray emission from the compact region around Sgr A^\ast (r ~ 100 pc). We suppose that this emission is generated by accretion processes onto the central supermassive blackhole when an unbounded part of captured stars obtains an additional momentum. As a result a flux of subrelativistic protons is generated near the Galactic center which heats the background plasma up to temperatures about 6-10 keV and produces by inverse bremsstrahlung a flux of non-thermal X-ray emission in the energy range above 10 keV.Comment: to be published in PASJ, v.61, No.5, 200
