    Achievable Rate Region and Path-Based Beamforming for Multi-User Single-Carrier Delay Alignment Modulation

    Delay alignment modulation (DAM) is a novel wideband transmission technique for mmWave massive MIMO systems, which exploits the high spatial resolution and multi-path sparsity to mitigate ISI, without relying on channel equalization or multi-carrier transmission. In particular, DAM leverages the delay pre-compensation and path-based beamforming to effectively align the multi-path components, thus achieving the constructive multi-path combination for eliminating the ISI while preserving the multi-path power gain. Different from the existing works only considering single-user DAM, this paper investigates the DAM technique for multi-user mmWave massive MIMO communication. First, we consider the asymptotic regime when the number of antennas Mt at BS is sufficiently large. It is shown that by employing the simple delay pre-compensation and per-path-based MRT beamforming, the single-carrier DAM is able to perfectly eliminate both ISI and IUI. Next, we consider the general scenario with Mt being finite. In this scenario, we characterize the achievable rate region of the multi-user DAM system by finding its Pareto boundary. Specifically, we formulate a rate-profile-constrained sum rate maximization problem by optimizing the per-path-based beamforming. Furthermore, we present three low-complexity per-path-based beamforming strategies based on the MRT, zero-forcing, and regularized zero-forcing principles, respectively, based on which the achievable sum rates are studied. Finally, we provide simulation results to demonstrate the performance of our proposed strategies as compared to two benchmark schemes based on the strongest-path-based beamforming and the prevalent OFDM, respectively. It is shown that DAM achieves higher spectral efficiency and/or lower peak-to-average-ratio, for systems with high spatial resolution and multi-path diversity.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

    Removal of Foodborne Pathogen Biofilms by Acidic Electrolyzed Water

    Biofilms, which are complex microbial communities embedded in the protective extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), are difficult to remove in food production facilities. In this study, the use of acidic electrolyzed water (AEW) to remove foodborne pathogen biofilms was evaluated. We used a green fluorescent protein-tagged Escherichia coli for monitoring the efficiency of AEW for removing biofilms, where under the optimal treatment conditions, the fluorescent signal of cells in the biofilm disappeared rapidly and the population of biofilm cells was reduced by more than 67%. Additionally, AEW triggered EPS disruption, as indicated by the deformation of the carbohydrate C-O-C bond and deformation of the aromatic rings in the amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine. These deformations were identified by EPS chemical analysis and Raman spectroscopic analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirmed that the breakup and detachment of biofilm were enhanced after AEW treatment. Further, AEW also eradicated biofilms formed by both Gram-negative bacteria (Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and Gram-positive bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes) and was observed to inactivate the detached cells which are a potential source of secondary pollution. This study demonstrates that AEW could be a reliable foodborne pathogen biofilm disrupter and an eco-friendly alternative to sanitizers traditionally used in the food industry

Face-to-face π-stacking inter­actions between inversion-related pyridine rings with centroid–centroid distances of 3.548 (3) and 3.662 (3) Å (perpendicular distances between the respective rings are 3.314 and 3.438 Å) are found. Inter­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between water mol­ecules and L ligands form R 5 3(10), R 6 5(14) and R 5 5(12) rings and also a centrosymmetric cage-like unit of water mol­ecules, which link eight adjacent NiII centers, forming a three-dimensional framework

    Robust, Flexible and Lightweight Dielectric Barrier Discharge Actuators Using Nanofoams/Aerogels

    Robust, flexible, lightweight, low profile enhanced performance dielectric barrier discharge actuators (plasma actuators) based on aerogels/nanofoams with controlled pore size and size distribution as well as pore shape. The plasma actuators offer high body force as well as high force to weight ratios (thrust density). The flexibility and mechanical robustness of the actuators allows them to be shaped to conform to the surface to which they are applied. Carbon nanotube (CNT) based electrodes serve to further decrease the weight and profile of the actuators while maintaining flexibility while insulating nano-inclusions in the matrix enable tailoring of the mechanical properties. Such actuators are required for flow control in aeronautics and moving machinery such as wind turbines, noise abatement in landing gear and rotary wing aircraft and other applications

    The Association of Hypertension with Obesity and Metabolic Abnormalities among Chinese Children

    A total of 8898 Chinese children (4580 boys and 4318 girls) aged 7–13 years in 6 cities of east China were recruited. Data on height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, serum lipid profiles, glucose, and insulin were collected. The overall prevalence of hypertension was 11.1%. Overweight and obese children had a higher risk of developing hypertension than their counterparts (29.1%, 17.4%, and 7.8%, resp.) (P=0.0001). The means levels of triglycerides, glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR (1.0 mmol/L, 4.5 mmol/L, 8.4 mU/mL and 1.7, resp.) among hypertensive children were all significantly higher than their normotensive counterparts (0.8 mmol/L, 4.5 mmol/L, 5.9 mU/mL, and 1.2, resp.) (P=0.0001). Compared with the healthy children, the risk (odds ratio, OR) of having hypertension among children with high triglycerides, hyperglycemia, and metabolic syndrome was 1.4 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0–2.0, P=0.0334), 1.5 (95% CI: 0.9–2.5, P=0.0890), and 2.8 (95%CI: 1.5–5.4, P=0.0014), respectively, after controlling for age, gender, BMI, income level, parents' education level and puberty. In conclusion, overweight and obese children have higher risk of having hypertension and children with dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and metabolic syndrome and higher HOMA-IR have higher risk of developing hypertension

    Geochronology and petrogenesis of the early Silurian Zeluo mafic-ultramafic intrusion, eastern Tibet: implications for the tectonic setting and evolution of the eastern Proto-Tethys Ocean

    The Tibetan Plateau is a key region to understand the evolution of the Tethys Oceans. To better constrain the tectonic evolution of the Proto-Tethys Ocean on the western margin of the Yangtze plate, we present an integrated petrography, geochemistry, and zircon U-Pb-Lu-Hf isotope study on newly recognized early Silurian gabbro and serpentinite rocks from the eastern Yidun terrane of the Tibetan Plateau. Zircon U-Pb dating of the gabbro yields an Early Silurian age of 438.2 ± 2.8 Ma. Zircon εHf(t) values of 5.4 to 8.5 suggest a single-stage model age (TDM1) ranging from 729 to 858 Ma. The gabbros exhibit low total rare earth element abundances but are moderately enriched in the light rare earth elements and the large-ion lithophile elements (e.g. Rb, Ba, and Sr), and display representative negative high-field strength elemental anomalies for Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf on spidergrams. The gabbro and serpentinites were derived from a depleted mantle-like source made of garnet-spinel lherzolite composition, from a sub-arc mantle wedge that was metasomatized by slab dehydration. Thus, the gabbro and serpentinites record an Early Silurian subduction event of the Proto-Tethys Ocean under the Yangtze plate. Furthermore, this study confirms that the Yidun terrane on the western margin of the Yangtze plate is underlined by a Precambrian crystalline basement

    The nutrition-based comprehensive intervention study on childhood obesity in China (NISCOC): a randomised cluster controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Childhood obesity and its related metabolic and psychological abnormalities are becoming serious health problems in China. Effective, feasible and practical interventions should be developed in order to prevent the childhood obesity and its related early onset of clinical cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this paper is to describe the design of a multi-centred random controlled school-based clinical intervention for childhood obesity in China. The secondary objective is to compare the cost-effectiveness of the comprehensive intervention strategy with two other interventions, one only focuses on nutrition education, the other only focuses on physical activity.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The study is designed as a multi-centred randomised controlled trial, which included 6 centres located in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shandong province, Heilongjiang province and Guangdong province. Both nutrition education (special developed carton style nutrition education handbook) and physical activity intervention (Happy 10 program) will be applied in all intervention schools of 5 cities except Beijing. In Beijing, nutrition education intervention will be applied in 3 schools and physical activity intervention among another 3 schools. A total of 9750 primary students (grade 1 to grade 5, aged 7-13 years) will participate in baseline and intervention measurements, including weight, height, waist circumference, body composition (bioelectrical impendence device), physical fitness, 3 days dietary record, physical activity questionnaire, blood pressure, plasma glucose and plasma lipid profiles. Data concerning investments will be collected in our study, including costs in staff training, intervention materials, teachers and school input and supervising related expenditure.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Present study is the first and biggest multi-center comprehensive childhood obesity intervention study in China. Should the study produce comprehensive results, the intervention strategies would justify a national school-based program to prevent childhood obesity in China.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>Chinese clinical trial registry (Primary registry in the WHO registry network) Identifier: ChiCTR-TRC-00000402</p

    Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome among children from six cities of China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Metabolic syndrome (MetS) in childhood can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia in adulthood, which is of increasing concern in transitional and advanced economies. The aim of the current study was to explore the prevalence of MetS among children from six cities of China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 8,764 children (4,495 boys, 4,269 girls) aged 7-11 years were randomly selected from 6 cities of China. MetS was mainly defined by the criteria proposed by International Diabetes Federation (IDF).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The overall prevalence of MetS for children older than 10 years was 0.8% by IDF definition. Obese children had significantly higher MetS prevalence compared with their counterparts with overweight (6.6% vs. 0.9%, <it>p </it>< 0.01) and normal weight (6.6% vs. 0.05%, <it>p </it>< 0.01). The prevalence of abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low high density lipoprotein cholesterol, hypertension and high glucose among obese children was 93.4%, 16.5%, 14.3%, 7.3% and 4.0%, respectively, which significantly higher than those among overweight children (37.0%, 6.1%, 10.0%, 4.2%, and 3.3%, respectively) and among normal weight children (1.2%, 3.3%, 4.0%, 1.7% and 2.5%, respectively). The proportion of children with at least one, two, and three items of the metabolic abnormalities were 25.0%, 5.4% and 0.9%, respectively. Metabolic abnormalities were also present in children under 10 years of age.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The early onset of MetS among children and relatively high proportions of children with at least one or two metabolic abnormalities in cities of China can increase the risk of developing MetS. It implies the necessity to take effective actions to control and prevent the rapid development of obesity among children in developing countries, especial those undergoing transition to a Western lifestyle.</p
