A one-way ANOVA test for functional data with graphical interpretation
A new functional ANOVA test, with a graphical interpretation of the result,
is presented. The test is an extension of the global envelope test introduced
by Myllymaki et al. (2017, Global envelope tests for spatial processes, J. R.
Statist. Soc. B 79, 381--404, doi: 10.1111/rssb.12172). The graphical
interpretation is realized by a global envelope which is drawn jointly for all
samples of functions. If a mean function computed from the empirical data is
out of the given envelope, the null hypothesis is rejected with the
predetermined significance level . The advantages of the proposed
one-way functional ANOVA are that it identifies the domains of the functions
which are responsible for the potential rejection. We introduce two versions of
this test: the first gives a graphical interpretation of the test results in
the original space of the functions and the second immediately offers a
post-hoc test by identifying the significant pair-wise differences between
groups. The proposed tests rely on discretization of the functions, therefore
the tests are also applicable in the multidimensional ANOVA problem. In the
empirical part of the article, we demonstrate the use of the method by
analyzing fiscal decentralization in European countries. The aim of the
empirical analysis is to capture differences between the levels of government
expenditure decentralization ratio among different groups of European
countries. The idea behind, based on the existing literature, is
straightforward: countries with a longer European integration history are
supposed to decentralize more of their government expenditure. We use the
government expenditure centralization ratios of 29 European Union and EFTA
countries in period from 1995 to 2016 sorted into three groups according to the
presumed level of European economic and political integration.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1506.0164
The Bioavailability of Vitamin E in Fortified Processed Foods
Objectives: Vitamin E is an important human lipophilic antioxidant and is required for many metabolic functions. A high vitamin E intake appears to favorably impact a variety of disease processes. The vitamin E intake, excluding sup-plemental intake, of the vast majority of adults is below the current recommended level. By consuming vitamin E-enriched food, it is possible to take in adequate amounts of vitamin E. Vitamin E intake from enriched foods might prevent certain diseases without the need to ingest specific vitamin E supplements. The vitamin E that is present in enriched foods has to exhibit maximal bioavailability to ensure a sufficient intake of vitamin E from one portion of fortified food. The aim of the present study was to develop an enriched food that has highly bioavailable vitamin E. Furthermore, we wanted to examine whether vitamin E bioavailability can be affected by the technological properties of fortified food. Methods: Volunteers were given test foods (cream cheese and mayonnaise) that had been fortified with 60 mg of RRR-α-tocopherol. The test foods were technologically modified and the bioavailability of RRR-α-tocopherol was determined via a short-term kinetic measurement, which was 24 h long, and a long-term kinetic measurement, which was 28 d long. The test foods were characterized with respect to matrix properties. Results: In comparison to the mayonnaise group the serum α-tocopherol area under the curve (AUC) was significantly higher in the cream cheese group, as shown in the short-term kinetic (p = 0.010) and long-term kinetic (p = 0.017) studies. Conclusions: In conclusion, RRR-α-tocopherol was more bioavailable in cream cheese than in mayonnaise in both short-term and long-term periods. Hence, food matrices affect bioavailability of RRR-α-tocopherol. Fortified foods with proven high α-tocopherol bioavailabilities could be merchandised as functional foods with diseases prevention properties.Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxon
Many people in the semi-arid tropics strongly depend on non-timber forest products (NTFPs) for livelihood. Increasing threats on NTFP-providing tree species, due to land-use intensification and over-harvesting, require ecological studies as well as additional information provided by local people. One important NTFP-providing tree in West Africa is Anogeissus leiocarpa. Even though this species is highly used, ethnobotanical studies on A. leiocarpa are scarce and address mainly qualitative aspects. Our study investigates uses, perceptions of the population development, and management strategies of A. leiocarpa among the Gulimanceba people in eastern Burkina Faso. We conducted a quantitative ethnobotanical survey and investigated distribution of traditional ecological knowledge related to the species on a local scale, i.e. difference in knowledge between villages, genders, and generations. Interviews reveal that A. leiocarpa is harvested by local people for 18 different uses and emphasize its high importance for local people. Ethnobotanical knowledge of A. leiocarpa was mostly evenly spread between genders and generations, while it slightly differed between villages. Although local people did not actively protect A. leiocarpa, current local harvesting modes and management resulted in sustainable use. However, ongoing land-use intensifications require adapted management strategies to guarantee the persistence of this important species. Our results provide, in combination with ecological results of our previous study, appropriate management recommendations. Our study emphasizes the importance of ethnobotanical studies on a local scale level in order to develop management strategies that are reliable in the specific area under the specific circumstances.
Glycemic index and microstructure analysis of a newly developed fiber enriched cookie
A diet with a high glycemic index (GI) is associated with an elevated risk for obesity or type 2 diabetes. We investigated the GI of a newly-developed fiber enriched cookie and characterized the microstructure of ingredients used. In a study with 26 non-diabetic healthy volunteers it was shown that the fiber enriched cookie has a GI of 58.9 in relation to white bread as reference. Using a conversion factor of 1.4, the GI of the fiber enriched cookie in relation to a glucose-solution is 42.0 and can be classified as a low-GI food. Postprandial insulin concentration was significantly lower after consumption of fiber enriched cookies compared to white bread. Glucose release after in vitro digestion was significantly lower from fiber enriched cookies compared to other cookies tested. In addition to its high percentage of fiber, the cookies’ low GI can be attributed to the limited gelatinization potential of the starch granules found in the ingredients used. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy it is shown that starch granule surface area of whole grain barley flour, spelt flour and oat flakes bears cluster-shaped protein–NSPS complexes that preferentially absorb water in conditions of water shortage and thereby prevent starch gelatinization

Molecular phylogeny and taxonomic revision of the sportive lemurs (Lepilemur, Primates)
BACKGROUND: The number of species within the Malagasy genus Lepilemur and their phylogenetic relationships is disputed and controversial. In order to establish their evolutionary relationships, a comparative cytogenetic and molecular study was performed. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1140 bp) from 68 individuals representing all eight sportive lemur species and most major populations, and compared the results with those obtained from cytogenetic studies derived from 99 specimens. RESULTS: Interspecific genetic variation, diagnostic characters and significantly supported phylogenetic relationships were obtained from the mitochondrial sequence data and are in agreement with cytogenetic information. The results confirm the distinctiveness of Lepilemur ankaranensis, L. dorsalis, L. edwardsi, L. leucopus, L. microdon, L. mustelinus, L. ruficaudatus and L. septentrionalis on species level. Additionally, within L. ruficaudatus large genetic differences were observed among different geographic populations. L. dorsalis from Sahamalaza Peninsula and from the Ambanja/Nosy Be region are paraphyletic, with the latter forming a sister group to L. ankaranensis. CONCLUSION: Our results support the classification of the eight major sportive lemur taxa as independent species. Moreover, our data indicate further cryptic speciation events within L. ruficaudatus and L. dorsalis. Based on molecular data we propose to recognize the sportive lemur populations from north of the Tsiribihina River, south of the Betsiboka River, and from the Sahamalaza Peninsula, as distinct species
