Bilateral Differentiation of Color and Morphology in the Larval and Pupal Stages of \u3ci\u3ePapilio Glaucus\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)
A sharply delineated, bilateral differentiation of color patterns and morphology were observed in a final (5th) instar larva of a subspecies backcross of a female Papilio glaucus glaucus with a hybrid male (P. g. glaucus x P. g. canadensis). Color and morphological differences were detectable in the pupa as well. In addition, a bilateral size difference was evident in both the pupa and the resulting adult butterfly. Such observations within a single living individual attest to the bilateral independence (also evident in perfect gynandromorphs) and general flexibility of the developmental control in this species of Lepidoptera
Einstein equations in the null quasi-spherical gauge III: numerical algorithms
We describe numerical techniques used in the construction of our 4th order
evolution for the full Einstein equations, and assess the accuracy of
representative solutions. The code is based on a null gauge with a
quasi-spherical radial coordinate, and simulates the interaction of a single
black hole with gravitational radiation. Techniques used include spherical
harmonic representations, convolution spline interpolation and filtering, and
an RK4 "method of lines" evolution. For sample initial data of "intermediate"
size (gravitational field with 19% of the black hole mass), the code is
accurate to 1 part in 10^5, until null time z=55 when the coordinate condition

Extraordinary Late-Time Infrared Emission of Type IIn Supernovae
Near-Infrared (NIR) observations are presented for five Type IIn supernovae
(SN 1995N, SN 1997ab, SN 1998S, SN 1999Z, and SN 1999el) that exhibit strong
infrared excesses at late times (t >= 100 d). H- and K-band emission from these
objects is dominated by a continuum that rises toward longer wavelengths. The
data are interpreted as thermal emission from dust, probably situated in a
pre-existing circumstellar nebula. The IR luminosities implied by single
temperature blackbody fits are quite large,> 10^(41 - 42) erg s^-1, and the
emission evolves slowly, lasting for years after maximum light. For SN 1995N,
the integrated energy release via IR dust emission was 0.5 -- 1 * 10^50 erg. A
number of dust heating scenarios are considered, the most likely being an
infrared echo poweredby X-ray and UV emissions from the shock interaction with

Detection of CO and Dust Emission in Near-Infrared Spectra of SN 1998S
Near-infrared spectra (0.95 -- 2.4 micron) of the peculiar Type IIn supernova
1998S in NGC 3877 from 95 to 355 days after maximum light are presented. K-band
data taken at days 95 and 225 show the presence of the first overtone of CO
emission near 2.3 micron, which is gone by day 355. An apparent extended blue
wing on the CO profile in the day 95 spectrum could indicate a large CO
expansion velocity (~2000 -- 3000 km/s). This is the third detection of
infrared CO emission in nearly as many Type II supernovae studied, implying
that molecule formation may be fairly common in Type II events, and that the
early formation of molecules in SN 1987A may be typical rather than
exceptional. Multi-peak hydrogen and helium lines suggest that SN 1998S is
interacting with a circumstellar disk, and the fading of the red side of this
profile with time is suggestive of dust formation in the ejecta, perhaps
induced by CO cooling. Continuum emission that rises towards longer wavelengths
(J -> K) is seen after day 225 with an estimated near-infrared luminosity >~
10^40 erg/s. This may be related to the near-infrared excesses seen in a number
of other supernovae. If this continuum is due to free-free emission, it
requires an exceptionally shallow density profile. On the other hand, the shape
of the continuum is well fit by a 1200 +- 150 K blackbody spectrum possibly due
to thermal emission from dust. Interestingly, we observe a similar 1200 K
blackbody-like, near-infrared continuum in SN 1997ab, another Type IIn
supernova at an even later post-maximum epoch (day 1064+). A number of dust
emission scenarios are discussed, and we conclude that the NIR dust continuum
is likely powered by the interaction of SN 1998S with the circumstellar medium.Comment: 38 Pages, 12 Figures, Submitted to The Astronomical Journa
Binary Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Evidence for Excess Clustering on Small Scales
We present a sample of 218 new quasar pairs with proper transverse
separations R_prop < 1 Mpc/h over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 3.0, discovered
from an extensive follow up campaign to find companions around the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey and 2dF Quasar Redshift Survey quasars. This sample includes
26 new binary quasars with separations R_prop < 50 kpc/h (theta < 10
arcseconds), more than doubling the number of such systems known. We define a
statistical sample of binaries selected with homogeneous criteria and compute
its selection function, taking into account sources of incompleteness. The
first measurement of the quasar correlation function on scales 10 kpc/h <
R_prop < 400 kpc/h is presented. For R_prop < 40 kpc/h, we detect an order of
magnitude excess clustering over the expectation from the large scale R_prop >
3 Mpc/h quasar correlation function, extrapolated down as a power law to the
separations probed by our binaries. The excess grows to ~ 30 at R_prop ~ 10
kpc/h, and provides compelling evidence that the quasar autocorrelation
function gets progressively steeper on sub-Mpc scales. This small scale excess
can likely be attributed to dissipative interaction events which trigger quasar
activity in rich environments. Recent small scale measurements of galaxy
clustering and quasar-galaxy clustering are reviewed and discussed in relation

The Quantity Theory of Money is Valid. The New Keynesians are Wrong!
We test the quantity theory of money (QTM) using a novel approach and a large new sample. We do not follow the usual approach of first differentiating the logarithm of the Cambridge equation to obtain an equation relating the growth rate of real GDP, the growth rate of money and inflation. These variables must then again be ‘integrated’ by averaging in order to obtain stable relationships. Instead we suggest a much simpler procedure for testing directly the stability of the coefficient of the Cambridge equation. For 125 countries and post-war data we find the coefficient to be surprisingly stable. We do not select for high inflation episodes as was done in most empirical studies; inflation rates do not even appear in our data set.
Much work supporting the QTM has been done by economic historians and at the University of Chicago by Milton Friedman and his associates. The QTM was a foundation stone of the monetarist revolution. Subsequently belief in it waned. The currently dominant New Keynesian School, implicitly or explicitly denies the validity of the QTM. We survey this history and argue that the QTM is valid and New Keynesians are wrong
'The language of the naked facts': Joseph Priestley on language and revealed religion
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) is usually remembered for his experiments in natural
philosophy and celebrated for his isolation of the gas we now call oxygen. However,
Priestley had a wide range of interests and published extensively on education, history,
politics, political philosophy, language, theology and religion. He dedicated his life to
elucidating a coherent set of epistemological, metaphysical and theological principles
which he believed explained the human mind, the natural world and the nature of God
and revelation. Recent studies of Priestley have emphasised the difficulties that arise
from isolating the various aspects of his thought and the fruitful outcome of uncovering
the many connections between his diverse areas of study. With this in mind, the present
dissertation aims to elucidate the relationship between two aspects of Priestley’s thought
that have not previously been studied together. It examines his theory of language and
argument alongside his work on theology and the evidences of revelation. Chapter One
provides an overview of Priestley’s epistemology, focusing on his work on induction,
judgment and assent. Chapter Two looks at Priestley’s analysis of the role of the
passions in our assent to propositions and the progressive generation of the personality,
while paying particular attention to the origins of figurative language. Chapter Three
examines Priestley’s theory of language development including the relationship
between figurative language and the extension of vocabulary and the close connection
between language and culture. Chapter Four demonstrates that Priestley’s discussion of
the evidences of revealed religion is structured around his theory of assent and
judgment. It also explains how assent to revelation is essential for the generation and
transcendence of the ‘self’. Chapter Five brings all the themes of the dissertation
together in a discussion of Priestley’s rational theology and examines his analysis of
figurative language in scripture
A Higher Dimensional Stationary Rotating Black Hole Must be Axisymmetric
A key result in the proof of black hole uniqueness in 4-dimensions is that a
stationary black hole that is ``rotating''--i.e., is such that the stationary
Killing field is not everywhere normal to the horizon--must be axisymmetric.
The proof of this result in 4-dimensions relies on the fact that the orbits of
the stationary Killing field on the horizon have the property that they must
return to the same null geodesic generator of the horizon after a certain
period, . This latter property follows, in turn, from the fact that the
cross-sections of the horizon are two-dimensional spheres. However, in
spacetimes of dimension greater than 4, it is no longer true that the orbits of
the stationary Killing field on the horizon must return to the same null
geodesic generator. In this paper, we prove that, nevertheless, a higher
dimensional stationary black hole that is rotating must be axisymmetric. No
assumptions are made concerning the topology of the horizon cross-sections
other than that they are compact. However, we assume that the horizon is
non-degenerate and, as in the 4-dimensional proof, that the spacetime is

Evaluation at scale of microbiome-derived metabolites as biomarker of flavan-3-ol intake in epidemiological studies.
The accurate assessment of dietary intake is crucial to investigate the effect of diet on health. Currently used methods, relying on self-reporting and food composition data, are known to have limitations and might not be suitable to estimate the intake of many bioactive food components. An alternative are nutritional biomarkers, which can allow an unbiased assessment of intake. They require a careful evaluation of their suitability, including: (a) the availability of a precise, accurate and robust analytical method, (b) their specificity (c) a consistent relationship with actual intake. We have evaluated human metabolites of a microbiome-derived flavan-3-ol catabolite, 5-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-[gamma]-valerolactone (gVL), as biomarker of flavan-3-ol intake in large epidemiological studies. Flavan-3-ols are widely consumed plant bioactives, which have received considerable interest due to their potential ability to reduce CVD risk. The availability of authentic standards allowed the development of a validated high-throughput method suitable for large-scale studies. In dietary intervention studies, we could show that gVL metabolites are specific for flavan-3-ols present in tea, fruits, wine and cocoa-derived products, with a strong correlation between intake and biomarker (Spearman's r = 0.90). This biomarker will allow for the first time to estimate flavan-3-ol intake and further investigation of associations between intake and disease risk
