Efimov Physics around the neutron rich Calcium-60 isotope
We calculate the neutron-Calcium-60 S-wave scattering phase shifts using
state of the art coupled-cluster theory combined with modern ab initio
interactions derived from chiral effective theory. Effects of three-nucleon
forces are included schematically as density dependent nucleon-nucleon
interactions. This information is combined with halo effective field theory in
order to investigate the Calcium-60-neutron-neutron system. We predict
correlations between different three-body observables and the two-neutron
separation energy of Calcium-62. This provides evidence of Efimov physics along
the Calcium isotope chain. Experimental key observables that facilitate a test
of our findings are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
JPL's parabolic dish test site
A parabolic dish test site (PDTS) was established in the California Mojave Desert to carry out work in testing solar point focusing concentrator systems and related hardware. The site was chosen because of its high solar insolation level and year around clear sky conditions. The various facilities and equipment at the PDTS, and the concentrator experiments being performed are described
Soluble field theory with a massless gauge invariant limit
It is shown that there exists a soluble four parameter model in (1+1)
dimensions all of whose propagators can be determined in terms of the
corresponding known propagators of the vector coupling theory. Unlike the
latter case, however, the limit of zero bare mass is nonsingular and yields a
nontrivial theory with a rigorously unbroken gauge invariance.Comment: 7 pages, revtex, no figure
Unification of the Soluble Two-dimensional vector coupling models
The general theory of a massless fermion coupled to a massive vector meson in
two dimensions is formulated and solved to obtain the complete set of Green's
functions. Both vector and axial vector couplings are included. In addition to
the boson mass and the two coupling constants, a coefficient which denotes a
particular current definition is required for a unique specification of the
model.
The resulting four parameter theory and its solution are shown to reduce in
appropriate limits to all the known soluble models, including in particular the
Schwinger model and its axial vector variant.Comment: 10 page
Perturbative Expansion in the Galilean Invariant Spin One-Half Chern-Simons Field Theory
A Galilean Chern-Simons field theory is formulated for the case of two
interacting spin-1/2 fields of distinct masses M and M'. A method for the
construction of states containing N particles of mass M and N' particles of
mass M' is given which is subsequently used to display equivalence to the
spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm effect in the N = N' =1 sector of the model. The latter
is then studied in perturbation theory to determine whether there are
divergences in the fourth order (one loop) diagram. It is found that the
contribution of that order is finite (and vanishing) for the case of parallel
spin projections while the antiparallel case displays divergences which are
known to characterize the spin zero case in field theory as well as in quantum
mechanics.Comment: 14 pages LaTeX, including 2 figures using eps
Rental Housing and the Natural Vacancy Rate
This study uses 1989-2005 data for the Seattle metropolitan area to test the natural vacancy rate hypothesis for rental housing markets using a new methodology. Findings support the existence of a natural vacancy rate for apartments that varies over time, and in some cases across apartment submarkets. Results show a decline in the natural vacancy rate in the time period following the introduction and growth of the Web. Results also show significant differences in natural vacancy rates for different geographic subareas. No significant differences in the natural vacancy rate are found for different apartment types.
The Outburst of the Blazar AO 0235+164 in 2006 December: Shock-in-Jet Interpretation
We present the results of polarimetric ( band) and multicolor photometric
() observations of the blazar AO 0235+16 during an outburst in 2006
December. The data reveal a short timescale of variability (several hours),
which increases from optical to near-IR wavelengths; even shorter variations
are detected in polarization. The flux density correlates with the degree of
polarization, and at maximum degree of polarization the electric vector tends
to align with the parsec-scale jet direction. We find that a variable component
with a steady power-law spectral energy distribution and very high optical
polarization (30-50%) is responsible for the variability. We interpret these
properties of the blazar withina model of a transverse shock propagating down
the jet. In this case a small change in the viewing angle of the jet, by
, and a decrease in the shocked plasma compression by a factor of
1.5 are sufficient to account for the variability.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, accepted for Ap
Materials review for improved automotive gas turbine engine
The potential role of superalloys, refractory alloys, and ceramics in the hottest sections of engines operating with turbine inlet temperatures as high as 1370 C is examined. The convential superalloys, directionally solidified eutectics, oxide dispersion strenghened alloys, and tungsten fiber reinforced superalloys are reviewed and compared on the basis of maximum turbine blade temperature capability. Improved high temperature protective coatings and special fabrication techniques for these advanced alloys are discussed. Chromium, columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten alloys are also reviewed. Molbdenum alloys are found to be the most suitable for mass produced turbine wheels. Various forms and fabrication processes for silicon nitride, silicon carbide, and SIALON's are investigated for use in highstress and medium stress high temperature environments
