    Imagining the Nile: Knowledge-Power Nexus in the 19th Century Anthropocene

    The Nile River has featured prominently in both nationalist memoirs and foreigners' travelogues. This paper explores human interventions in the Nile, not in the physical changes in the landscape but rather in the imagination, discourses and knowledge production of the nineteenth century European and Ottoman Empires. We show how the emergence of the 'modern river' was made possible by two crucial strains of Nile imaginaries and knowledge. The paper examines writings by European travellers and nationalist writing by Egypt's modernist, Alī Mubārak. Through our analysis we show how the Nile was co-constituted by two principal story-telling ventures: European travelogues and Egyptian modernist writing

    Computed tomographic features of pulmonary pure ground-glass nodule: a comparison between neoplastic and non-neoplastic nodules

    Abstract Background Ground-glass nodules (GGNs) are detected more frequently nowadays with the increase in MDCT resolution and applications. On CT GGN is a well circumscribed nodule with mild increase attenuation and not obscuring bronchial and vascular markings. This study aimed to discriminate neoplastic from non-neoplastic pure ground-glass nodules (pGGNs) by performing comparative quantitative and qualitative assessment of main features in computed tomography (CT) chest imaging. This prospective study involved 72 patients, who were referred to perform multidetector computed tomography of the chest in the radiology department. Cases with ground-glass pulmonary nodules were included in the study, and each nodule was assessed and followed for 2 years by a radiomics software for density and histogram analysis and then classified to neoplastic and non-neoplastic nodules. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic nodules morphology and radiomics were compared, and statistical analysis was done. Results After histopathology, positron emission tomography and computed tomography, or close follow-up, pGGNs were classified to neoplastic and non-neoplastic nodules. There was statistically significant difference regarding the mean size, where in cases of neoplastic nodules it was 6.66 mm and the mean size of benign nodules was 11.25 mm. Moreover, irregularity index and histogram peak frequency had a significant correlation with a P value of 0.007 and 0.022, respectively. The cutoff level for peak frequency percentage was 20.5% with 56.3% sensitivity and 79.2% specificity. Conclusions Radiomics had a growing role in pulmonary nodule assessment. Radiomics along with morphologic features assessment improved the detection efficiency of neoplastic versus non-neoplastic ground-glass nodules with histogram peak frequency, nodule size, and irregularity index as the main differentiating factors in this study

    Paeonol Attenuates Hepatic Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Modulating the Nrf2/HO-1 and TLR4/MYD88/NF-κB Signaling Pathways

    Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (HIR) is the most common type of liver injury following several clinical situations. Modulating oxidative stress and inflammation by Nrf2/HO-1 and TLR4/MYD88/NF-κB pathways, respectively, is involved in alleviating HIR injury. Paeonol is a natural phenolic compound that demonstrates significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study explored the possible protective effect of paeonol against HIR injury and investigated its possible molecular mechanisms in rats. Rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham-operated control, paeonol-treated sham-operated control, HIR untreated, and HIR paeonol-treated groups. The results confirmed that hepatic injury was significantly aggravated biochemically by elevated serum levels of alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase, as well as by histopathological alterations, while paeonol reduced the increase in transaminases and alleviated pathological changes induced by HIR. Additionally, paeonol inhibited the HIR-induced oxidative stress in hepatic tissues by decreasing the upraised levels of malondialdehyde and nitric oxide and enhancing the suppressed levels of reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase activity. Furthermore, paeonol activated the protective antioxidative Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. The protective effect of paeonol was associated with inhibiting the expression of the inflammatory key mediators TLR4, MYD88, NF-κB, and TNF-α. Finally, paeonol inhibited the increased mRNA levels of the pro-apoptotic marker Bax and enhanced the reduced mRNA levels of the anti-apoptotic marker Bcl-2. Taken together, our results proved for the first time that paeonol could protect against HIR injury by inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis

    Prevalence and knowledge of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and health-related practices among women of Syria: a cross-sectional study

    AbstractPolycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent metabolic and hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. Limited data exists on Syrian women’s PCOS awareness and health behaviors. This study aimed to gauge PCOS prevalence, knowledge, awareness, and health-related practices among Syrian women. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from 11 February to 27 October 2022, targeting Syrian women aged 18–45. Collaborators from specific medical universities distributed a questionnaire adapted from a Malaysian paper through social media platforms. Out of 1840 surveyed Syrian women, 64.2% were aged 21–29, and 69.6% held bachelor’s degrees. Those with a bachelor’s degree exhibited the highest mean knowledge score (12.86), and women previously diagnosed with PCOS had a higher mean knowledge score (13.74) than those without. Approximately 27.4% were confirmed PCOS cases, and 38.9% had possible cases. Women with PCOS were 3.41 times more likely to possess knowledge about the condition. The findings suggest a moderate level of PCOS knowledge and health-related practices among Syrian women, emphasizing the need for increased awareness. Consistent local PCOS screening programs, in collaboration with obstetrics and gynecology professionals, are crucial for improving understanding and clinical symptom recognition of this condition among Syrian women
