Changes in land cover, rainfall and stream flow in Upper Gilgel Abbay catchment, Blue Nile basin – Ethiopia
In this study we evaluated changes in land cover and rainfall in the Upper Gilgel Abbay catchment in the Upper Blue Nile basin and how changes affected stream flow in terms of annual flow, high flows and low flows. Land cover change assessment was through classification analysis of remote sensing based land cover data while assessments on rainfall and stream flow data are by statistical analysis. Results of the supervised land cover classification analysis indicated that 50.9 % and 16.7 % of the catchment area was covered by forest in 1973 and 2001, respectively. This significant decrease in forest cover is mainly due to expansion of agricultural land. \ud

By use of a change detection procedure, three periods were identified for which changes in rainfall and stream flow were analyzed. Rainfall was analyzed at monthly base by use of the Mann-Kendall test statistic and results indicated a statistically significant, decreasing trend for most months of the year. However, for the wet season months of June, July and August rainfall has increased. In the period 1973–2005, the annual flow of the catchment decreased by 12.1 %. Low flow and high flow at daily base were analyzed by a low flow and a high flow index that is based on a 95 % and 5 % exceedance probability. Results of the low flow index indicated decreases of 18.1 % and 66.6 % for the periods 1982–2000 and 2001–2005 respectively. Results of high flows indicated an increase of 7.6 % and 46.6 % for the same periods. In this study it is concluded that over the period 1973–2005 stream flow has changed in the Gilgel Abbay catchment by changes in land cover and changes in rainfall
Rain event properties at the source of the Blue Nile River
In the present study, spatial and temporal patterns of rain event properties are analysed. These event properties are rain event depth, event duration, mean event rain rate, peak rain rate and the time span between two consecutive rain events which is referred to as inter-event time (IET). In addition, we assessed how rain event properties change when the period over which rainfall data is aggregated changes from 1 to 6 min and when the minimum inter-event time (MIT) changes from 30 min to 8 h. Rainfall data is obtained from a field campaign in two wet seasons of June–August (JJA) of 2007 and 2008 in Gilgel Abbay watershed that is situated at the source basin of the Upper Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. The rainfall data was automatically recorded at eight stations. The results revealed that rain event depth is more related to peak rain rate than to event duration. At the start and towards the end of the wet season, the rain events have larger depth with longer duration and longer IET than those in mid-season. Event rain rate and IET are strongly related to terrain elevation. Sekela which is on a mountain area has the shortest IET while Bahir Dar which is at the south shore of Lake Tana has the longest IET. The period over which rainfall data is aggregated significantly affected the values of rain event properties that are estimated using relatively small value (30 min) of MIT but its effect diminished when the MIT is increased to 8 h. It is shown that increasing the value of MIT has the largest effect on rain event properties of mountain stations that are characterised by high rainfall intermittency

Rapid, multiplexed microfluidic phage display
The development of a method for high-throughput, automated proteomic screening could impact areas ranging from fundamental molecular interactions to the discovery of novel disease markers and therapeutic targets. Surface display techniques allow for efficient handling of large molecular libraries in small volumes. In particular,
phage display has emerged as a powerful technology for selecting peptides and proteins with enhanced, target-specific binding affinities. Yet, the process becomes cumbersome and time-consuming when multiple targets are involved.Here we demonstrate for the first time a microfluidic chip capable of identifying high affinity phage displayed peptides for multiple targets in just a single round and without the need for bacterial infection. The chip is shown to be able to yield well-established control consensus sequences while simultaneously
identifying new sequences for clinically important targets.
Indeed, the confined parameters of the device allow not only for highly controlled assay conditions but also introduce a significant time-reduction to the phage display process. We anticipate that this easily-fabricated, disposable device has the potential to impact areas
ranging from fundamental studies of protein, peptide, and molecular interactions, to applications such as fully automated proteomic screening
The Use of Index Card Match Collaborated with Group Discussion to Improve Students Reading Comprehension of Recount Text
This research entitled the use of index card match collaborated with group discussion to improve students reading comprehension of recount text. The purpose of this research is to solve the students problem which was their difficulty in comprehending the recount text. The subject of this research was class VIIIF; which consisted of 31 students. This research was done in three cycles. The researcher used short answer tests, observation checklist tables, and field notes as the tools of collecting data. The research finding showed that the students reading comprehension improved from the first cycle to the last cycle. It is showed by the number of the students who passed the Standard of minimum score in the last cycle (87,10 % or 27 students). As the target of this research is to make 80 % of students passed the KKM (70). While, it is supported by the mean score of students achievement improved from 62.42 to 81.45. As the result, the writer concludes that Index Card Match collaborated with Group Discussion improved students reading comprehension of recount text very well
Stochastic approach to inflation II: classicality, coarse-graining and noises
In this work we generalize a previously developed semiclassical approach to
inflation, devoted to the analysis of the effective dynamics of coarse-grained
fields, which are essential to the stochastic approach to inflation. We
consider general non-trivial momentum distributions when defining these fields.
The use of smooth cutoffs in momentum space avoids highly singular quantum
noise correlations and allows us to consider the whole quantum noise sector
when analyzing the conditions for the validity of an effective classical
dynamical description of the coarse-grained field. We show that the weighting
of modes has physical consequences, and thus cannot be considered as a mere
mathematical artifact. In particular we discuss the exponential inflationary
scenario and show that colored noises appear with cutoff dependent amplitudes.Comment: 18 pages, revtex, no figure
