Non-equilibrium melting of colloidal crystals in confinement
We report on a novel and flexible experiment to investigate the
non-equilibrium melting behaviour of model crystals made from charged colloidal
spheres. In a slit geometry polycrystalline material formed in a low salt
region is driven by hydrostatic pressure up an evolving gradient in salt
concentration and melts at large salt concentration. Depending on particle and
initial salt concentration, driving velocity and the local salt concentration
complex morphologic evolution is observed. Crystal-melt interface positions and
the melting velocity are obtained quantitatively from time resolved Bragg- and
polarization microscopic measurements. A simple theoretical model predicts the
interface to first advance, then for balanced drift and melting velocities to
become stationary at a salt concentration larger than the equilibrium melting
concentration. It also describes the relaxation of the interface to its
equilibrium position in a stationary gradient after stopping the drive in
different manners. We further discuss the influence of the gradient strength on
the resulting interface morphology and a shear induced morphologic transition
from polycrystalline to oriented single crystalline material before melting
Haldane's Fractional Exclusion Statistics for Multicomponent Systems
The idea of fractional exclusion statistics proposed by Haldane is applied to
systems with internal degrees of freedom, and its thermodynamics is examined.
In case of one dimension, various bulk quantities calculated show that the
critical behavior of such systems can be described by conformal field
theories and conformal weights are completely characterized by statistical
interactions. It is also found that statistical interactions have intimate
relationship with a topological order matrix in Chern-Simons theory for the
fractional quantum Hall effect.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, preprint YITP/K-107
Crohn's disease activity index and Vienna classification - Is it worthwhile to calculate before surgery?
Background: Crohn's disease (CD) patients with increased disease activity may reveal an increased risk for perioperative complications. The `Crohn's disease activity index' (CDAI) and the `Vienna classification' (VC) were developed for standardized disease activity estimations. The significance of these scores to predict extent, type and early outcome of surgery in CD patients was analyzed. Methods: In 179 surgically treated CD patients, the CDAI and VC were assessed from a prospective database. Relations of the scores with CD risk factors, type, number, location and complications of surgery were analyzed. Results: VC behavior and location subtypes were associated with distinct types of surgery (i.e. `strictureplasty' in `stricturing disease', `colon surgery' in `colon involvement'), but not with surgery type and extent or outcome. Surgery extent (i.e. with 5 vs. 3 `surgical sites' 425 +/- 25 vs. 223.3 +/- 25) and complications (357.1 +/- 36.9 (with) vs. 244.4 +/- 13 (without)) were associated with elevated CDAI levels; however, nicotine abuse remained the only significant risk factor for perioperative complications after multiple logistic regression. Conclusion: The significance of VC or CDAI for predicting the extent of surgery or complications is limited. None of the tested variables except preoperative nicotine abuse influenced the likelihood for perioperative complications. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Base

The use of graphics processing units for scientific computations is an
emerging strategy that can significantly speed up various different algorithms.
In this review, we discuss advances made in the field of computational physics,
focusing on classical molecular dynamics, and on quantum simulations for
electronic structure calculations using the density functional theory, wave

Search for B+ -> D*+ pi0 decay
We report on a search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay B+ -> D*+ pi0,
based on a data sample of 657 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S)
resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+ e- collider.
We find no significant signal and set an upper limit of Br(B+ -> D*+ pi0) < 3.6
x 10^-6 at the 90% confidence level. This limit can be used to constrain the
ratio between suppressed and favored B -> D* pi decay amplitudes, r < 0.051, at
the 90% confidence level.Comment: 5pages, 2figures, submitted to PRL (v1); PRL published version (v2:

Observation of Ds1(2536)+ -> D+pi-K+ and angular decomposition of Ds1(2536)+ -> D*+K0S
Using 462/fb of e+e- annihilation data recorded by the Belle detector, we
report the first observation of the decay Ds1(2536)+ -> D+pi-K+. The ratio of
branching fractions B(Ds1+ -> D+pi-K+)/B(Ds1+ -> D*+K0) is measured to be
(3.27+-0.18+-0.37)%. We also study the angular distributions in the Ds1(2536)+
-> D*+K0S decay and measure the ratio of D- and S-wave amplitudes. The S-wave
dominates, with a partial width of Gamma_S/Gamma_total=0.72+-0.05+-0.01.Comment: Submitted to Phys.Rev.D 16 pages, 6 figures, 3 table
Evidence of the Purely Leptonic Decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar
We present the first evidence of the decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar using 414
fb^-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at
the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events are tagged by fully
reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We detect the signal with
a significance of 3.5 standard deviations including systematics, and measure
the branching fraction to be Br(B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar) = (1.79
+0.56-0.49(stat) +0.46-0.51(syst))*10^-4. This implies that f_B = 0.229
+0.036-0.031(stat) +0.034-0.037(syst) GeV and is the first direct measurement
of this quantity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter
Measurement of CP asymmetry in Cabibbo suppressed D0 decays
We measure the CP-violating asymmetries in decays to the D0 -> K+K- and D0 ->
pi+pi- CP eigenstates using 540 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle
detector at or near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. Cabibbo-favored D0 -> K-pi+
decays are used to correct for systematic detector effects. The results,
A_{CP}^{KK} = (-0.43 +- 0.30 +- 0.11)% and A_{CP}^{pipi} = (+0.43 +- 0.52 +-
0.12)%, are consistent with no CP violation.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Measurements of exclusive B_s^0 decays at the Y(5S) resonance
Several exclusive decays are studied using a 1.86 fb-1 data sample
collected at the Y(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric
energy e^+ e^- collider. In the decay mode we find 10
candidates and measure the corresponding branching fraction. Combining
the B_s^0 -> D_s^{(*)-} \pi^+, B_s^0 -> D_s^{(*)-} \rho^+, B_s^0 -> J/\psi \phi
and B_s^0 -> J/\psi \eta decay modes, a significant signal is observed.
The ratio \sigma (e^+ e^- -> B_s^* \bar{B}_s^*) / \sigma (e^+ e^- -> B_s^{(*)}
\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (93^{+7}_{-9} \pm 1)% is obtained at the Y(5S) energy,
indicating that meson production proceeds predominantly through the
creation of pairs. The and meson masses are
measured to be M(B_s^0)=(5370 \pm 1 \pm 3)MeV/c^2 and M(B_s^*)=(5418 \pm 1 \pm
3)MeV/c^2. Upper limits on the B_s^0 -> \gamma \gamma, B_s^0 -> \phi \gamma,
B_s^0 -> K^+ K^- and B_s^0 -> D_s^{(*)+} D_s^{(*)-} branching fractions are
also reported.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, published in Phys. Rev. D76, 012002 (2007
