    Correlation between TcT_c and anisotropic scattering in Tl2_2Ba2_2CuO6+δ_{6+\delta}

    Full text link
    Angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements are used to determine the isotropic and anisotropic components of the transport scattering rate in overdoped Tl2_2Ba2_2CuO6+δ_{6+\delta} for a range of TcT_c values between 15K and 35K. The size of the anisotropic scattering term is found to scale linearly with TcT_c, establishing a link between the superconducting and normal state physics. Comparison with results from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicates that the transport and quasiparticle lifetimes are distinct.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Some parasitic worms in freshwater fishes and fish-predators from the Transvaal, South Africa

    This report concerns a collection of parasitic worms from South Africa, and contains a new species of monogenean, Gyrodactylus transvaalensis, six species of adult  trematodes, including a new species of Phyllodistomum.P. van der waali, two  metacercariae of the Family Clinostomidae and three of the Order Strigeida, as well as two species of cestodes, and larvae of the nematode genus Contracaecum. The adults of previously-known helminths are redescribed, with some remarks on their systematics and biology. Accompanying the material of the new gyrodactylid monogenean there is a specimen which is thought to be a giant of the new form, and this appears to be the first recorded suggestion of the occurrence of gigantism in the Monogenea, and in fact in any kind of helminth

    Combined Assessment of Arterial and Venous Anatomy in Lower Limb Ischaemia Using a Single Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Scan

    AbstractContrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Angiography (CE-MRA) is a non-invasive investigative modality for patients with lower limb arterial insufficiency. When infra-inguinal arterial reconstruction is indicated autologous great saphenous vein is the conduit of choice and adequacy of the vein is often assessed by an additional Duplex ultrasound.We evaluated whether single, high-resolution steady state MR imaging with blood pool contrast agent could generate a sufficiently informative assessment of both venous and arterial anatomy to plan surgery potentially avoiding the need for an additional venous duplex.There was good correlation between CE-MRA, venous duplex and subsequent operative findings

    The International Society for Burns Injuries (ISBI) has published guidelines for the management of multiple or mass burns casualties, and recommends that 'each country has or should have a disaster planning system that addresses its own particular needs.' The need for a national burns disaster plan integrated with national and provincial disaster planning was discussed at the South African Burns Society Congress in 2009, but there was no real involvement in the disaster planning prior to the 2010 World Cup; the country would have been poorly prepared had there been a burns disaster during the event. This article identifies some of the lessons learnt and strategies derived from major burns disasters and burns disaster planning from other regions. Members of the South African Burns Society are undertaking an audit of burns care in South Africa to investigate the feasibility of a national burns disaster plan. This audit (which is still under way) also aims to identify weaknesses of burns care in South Africa and implement improvements where necessary

    Violation of the isotropic-â„“\ell approximation in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

    Full text link
    Magnetotransport measurements on the overdoped cuprate La_{1.7}Sr_{0.3}CuO_4 are fitted using the Ong construction and band parameters inferred from angle-resolved photoemission. Within a band picture, the low temperature Hall data can only be fitted satisfactorily by invoking strong basal-plane anisotropy in the mean-free-path â„“\ell. This violation of the isotropic-â„“\ell approximation supports a picture of dominant small-angle elastic scattering in cuprates due to out-of-plane substitutional disorder. We show that both band anisotropy and anisotropy in the elastic scattering channel strongly renormalize the Hall coefficient in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 over a wide doping and temperature range.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
