The 6-vertex model of hydrogen-bonded crystals with bond defects
It is shown that the percolation model of hydrogen-bonded crystals, which is
a 6-vertex model with bond defects, is completely equivalent with an 8-vertex
model in an external electric field. Using this equivalence we solve exactly a
particular 6-vertex model with bond defects. The general solution for the
Bethe-like lattice is also analyzed.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures; added references for section
Improving measurements of SF6 for the study of atmospheric transport and emissions
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a potent greenhouse gas and useful atmospheric tracer. Measurements of SF6 on global and regional scales are necessary to estimate emissions and to verify or examine the performance of atmospheric transport models. Typical precision for common gas chromatographic methods with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) is 1–2%. We have modified a common GC-ECD method to achieve measurement precision of 0.5% or better. Global mean SF6 measurements were used to examine changes in the growth rate of SF6 and corresponding SF6 emissions. Global emissions and mixing ratios from 2000–2008 are consistent with recently published work. More recent observations show a 10% decline in SF6 emissions in 2008–2009, which seems to coincide with a decrease in world economic output. This decline was short-lived, as the global SF6 growth rate has recently increased to near its 2007–2008 maximum value of 0.30±0.03 pmol mol−1 (ppt) yr−1 (95% C.L.)
Pulmonary Lobe Segmentation with Probabilistic Segmentation of the Fissures and a Groupwise Fissure Prior
A fully automated, unsupervised lobe segmentation algorithm is presented based on a probabilistic segmentation of the fissures and the simultaneous construction of a population model of the fissures. A two-class probabilistic segmentation segments the lung into candidate fissure voxels and the surrounding parenchyma. This was combined with anatomical information and a groupwise fissure prior to drive non-parametric surface fitting to obtain the final segmentation. The performance of our fissure segmentation was validated on 30 patients from the COPDGene cohort, achieving a high median F1-score of 0:90 and showed general insensitivity to filter parameters. We evaluated our lobe segmentation algorithm on the LOLA11 dataset, which contains 55 cases at varying levels of pathology. We achieved the highest score of 0:884 of the automated algorithms. Our method was further tested quantitatively and qualitatively on 80 patients from the COPDGene study at varying levels of functional impairment. Accurate segmentation of the lobes is shown at various degrees of fissure incompleteness for 96% of all cases. We also show the utility of including a groupwise prior in segmenting the lobes in regions of grossly incomplete fissures

Separation of hafnium from zirconium in sulfuric acid solutions using pressurized ion exchange
High-resolution pressurized ion exchange has been used successfully to study and separate hafnium and zirconium sulfate complexes by chromatographic elution from Dowex 50W-X8 (15 to 25 ..mu..m) resin with sulfuric acid solutions. Techniques were developed to continuously monitor the column effluents for zirconium and hafnium by reaction with fluorometric and colorimetric reagents. Since neither reagent was specific for either metal ion, peak patterns were initially identified by using the stable isotopes /sup 90/Zr and /sup 180/Hf as fingerprints of their elution position. Distribution ratios for both zirconium and hafnium decrease as the inverse fourth power of the sulfuric acid concentration below 2N and as the inverse second power at higher acid concentration. The hafnium-to-zirconium separation factor is approximately constant (approx. 8) over the 0.5 to 3N range. Under certain conditions, an unseparated fraction was observed that was not retained by the resin. The amount of this fraction which is thought to be a polymeric hydrolysis product appears to be a function of metal and sulfuric acid concentrations. Conditions are being sought to give the highest zirconium concentration and the lowest acid concentration that can be used as a feed material for commercial scale-up in the continuous annular chromatographic (CAC) unit without formation of the polymer

The effect of caffeine mouth rinse on self-paced cycling performance
The aim of the study was to determine whether caffeine mouth rinse would improve 30 min self-paced cycling trial. Twelve healthy active males (age 20.5±0.7 years, mass 87.4±18.3 kg) volunteered for the study. They attended the laboratory on 3 separate occasions performing a 30 min self-paced cycling trial. On one occasion water was given as a mouth rinse for 5 s (PLA), on another occasion a 6.4% maltodextrin (CHO) solution was given for 5 s and finally a caffeine solution (containing 32 mg of caffeine dissolved in 125 ml water; CAF) was given for 5 s. Distance cycled, heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, cadence, speed and power output were recorded throughout all trials. Distance cycled during the CAF mouth rinse trial (16.2±2.8 km) was significantly greater compared to PLA trial (14.9±2.6 km). There was no difference between CHO and CAF trials (P=0.89). Cadence, power and velocity were significantly greater during the CAF trial compared to both PLA and CHO (P0.05). Caffeine mouth rinse improves 30 min cycling performance by allowing the participant to increase cadence, power and velocity without a concurrent increase in perceived exertion and heart rate
Long range correlation in cosmic microwave background radiation
We investigate the statistical anisotropy and Gaussianity of temperature
fluctuations of Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) data from {\it
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe} survey, using the multifractal detrended
fluctuation analysis, rescaled range and scaled windowed variance methods. The
multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis shows that CMB fluctuations has a
long range correlation function with a multifractal behavior. By comparing the
shuffled and surrogate series of CMB data, we conclude that the multifractality
nature of temperature fluctuation of CMB is mainly due to the long-range
correlations and the map is consistent with a Gaussian distribution.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, V2: Added comments, references and major

RECOVERY OF URANIUM FROM AMINE EXTRACTANTS WITH AMMONIUM CARBONATE
An economical process was developed through benchscale experiments for recovering uranium from amine extractants with ammonium carbonate solution. By recycling the strip solution to allow build-up in the concentration of ammonium sulfate (formed in the stripping reactions) to 1-2M, the solubility of uranium in the aqueous phase was limited to i by calcination at 5OO deg C, yielding a high assay (>97% U/sub 3/O/sub 8/) concentrate virtually free of sodium, molybdenum, and vanadium. Estimated reagent costs for the strippingprecipitation step were 7 cent per pound of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/. (auth
Libraries Respond to Mobile Ubiquity: Research and Assessment of Mobile Device Usage Trends for Academic and Medical Libraries
The authors consider trends in mobile device usage for the Internet as a whole, for EBSCO Discovery Service across all client libraries, and at two specific libraries: Preston Medical Library, serving the University of Tennessee (UT) Graduate School of Medicine and UT Medical Center, and the Joyner Library at East Carolina University, serving students and faculty on the main campus. Librarians at Preston Medical Library conducted a survey to determine which mobile devices, platforms, and apps were used by their patrons in 2012. East Carolina University piloted an iPad and e-reader lending program in 2010–2011. The results of each are being used to guide service planning related to mobile applications, education, and support
Anomalous jumping in a double-well potential
Noise induced jumping between meta-stable states in a potential depends on
the structure of the noise. For an -stable noise, jumping triggered by
single extreme events contributes to the transition probability. This is also
called Levy flights and might be of importance in triggering sudden changes in
geophysical flow and perhaps even climatic changes. The steady state statistics
is also influenced by the noise structure leading to a non-Gibbs distribution
for an -stable noise.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
