    Opening the Box: Information Technology, Work Practices, and Wages

    There is substantial debate about the effects of technological change on wages. We argue that the relationship between technology and wages is context-dependent. To test this proposition, we use data gathered from 303 U.S. bank branches and examine empirically the association between different kinds of information technology (IT), work practices, and wages for the job of customer service representative in bank branches. We also test for interaction effects between IT and work practices. Our results suggest that context sometimes matters: the wage outcomes for IT that automates basic tasks are moderated by high-involvement work practices, while IT that improves the quality of organizational information is related positively to wage outcomes independently of context.

    The vegetation of montane lagoons of the New England Tablelands Bioregion, New South Wales is examined using flexible UPGMA analysis of frequency scores on all vascular plant taxa, charophytes and one liverworts. Seven communities are described: 1. Hydrocotyle tripartita – Isotoma fluviatilis – Ranunculus inundatus – Lilaeopsis polyantha herbfield; 2. Eleocharis sphacelata – Potamogeton tricarinatus sedgeland; 3. Eleocharis sphacelata – Utricularia australis – Isolepis fluitans, herbfield; 4. Utricularia australis – Nitella sonderi herbfield; 5. Eleocharis sphacelata – Utricularia australis – Ricciocarpus natans sedgeland; 6. Carex gaudichaudiana – Holcus lanatus – Stellaria angustifolia sedgeland; 7. Cyperus sphaeroides – Eleocharis gracilis – Schoenus apogon – Carex gaudichaudiana sedgeland. 58 lagoons were located and identified, only 28% of which are considered to be intact and in good condition. Two threatened species (Aldovandra vesiculosa and Arthaxon hispidus) and three RoTAP-listed taxa were encountered during the survey

    Combustion synthesis of ceramic and metal-matrix composites

    Combustion synthesis or self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is effected by heating a reactant mixture, to above the ignition temperature (Tig) whereupon an exothermic reaction is initiated which produces a maximum or combustion temperature, Tc. These SHS reactions are being used to produce ceramics, intermetallics, and composite materials. One of the major limitations of this process is that relatively high levels of porosity, e.g., 50 percent, remain in the product. Conducting these SHS reactions under adiabatic conditions, the maximum temperature is the adiabatic temperature, Tad, and delta H (Tad) = 0, Tad = Tc. If the reactants or products go through a phase change, the latent heat of transformation needs to be taken into account

    A comparison of Olpidium isolates from a range of host plants using internal transcribed spacer sequence analysis and host range studies

    Olpidium brassicae is a ubiquitous obligate root-infecting fungal pathogen. It is an important vector of a wide range of plant viruses. Olpidium isolates that infected brassica plants did not infect lettuce plants and vice-versa. Host range tests, PCR amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 5.8S regions of 25 Olpidium isolates from brassica, carrot, cucumber and lettuce originating from four continents revealed differences between isolates. Based on their ability to infect lettuce and brassicas and the differences between their ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2 regions they could be separated into a number of distinct groups. Comparisons with other published sequences revealed two distinct genetic groups of brassica-infecting isolates, two distinct groups of lettuce-infecting isolates, one of which contained a carrot-infecting isolate and a distinct group comprising a cucumber-infecting isolate and a melon-infecting isolate.     This Article discusses the context of common law and statutory materials dealing with minors who participate in the entertainment and sports fields. The Article describes the changes undertaken as a result of several notorious cases involving prominent child actors, and how the California legislature dealt with issues ranging from set asides of income, approval of contracts by a competent court of jurisdiction, recognition of the legitimate interests of all parties to the contract, to principles under which a minor would be precluded from disaffirming a contract. The Article then applies and extends the principles developed in entertainment contracts to minors who participate in professional athletics and offers concrete suggestions for perfecting a balance in interests by focusing on assuring the minor with representation by “qualified counsel experienced with entertainment industry law and practices
