Exploring the Relationship Between Hotel Characteristics and Crime

    Get PDF
Knowledge of crimes that have occurred in hotels has been scares. The authors explore the nature and causes of hotel crimes in a U.S. metropolitan area. Levels of crimes were directly related to size of the hotel, target market of business travelers, access to public transportation, and an unsafe image of the environment surrounding the hotel. Crime prevention programs based on the findings can be developed to protect the safety of guests and property

Singlet Charge 2/32/3 Quark hiding the Top: Tevatron and LEP Implications

If cc and tt quarks are strongly mixed with a weak singlet charge 2/32/3 quark, BR(t→ℓν+X)BR(t\to \ell\nu + X) could be suppressed via the t→cH0t\to cH^0 mode, thereby the top quark could still hide below MWM_W, whereas the heavy quark signal observed at the Tevatron is due to the dominantly singlet quark QQ. This may occur without affecting the small mcm_c value. Demanding mQ≃175m_Q \simeq 175 GeV and m_t \ltap M_W, we find that BR(t→ℓν+X)BR(t\to \ell\nu + X) cannot be too suppressed. The heavy quark QQ decays via W, HW,\ H, and ZZ bosons. The latter can lead to bb-tagged Z+4Z + 4 jet events, while the strong cc--QQ mixing is reflected in sizable Q→sWQ\to sW fraction. Z→tcˉZ\to t\bar c decay occurs at tree level and may be at the 10−310^{-3} order, leading to the signature of Z→ℓνbcˉZ\to \ell\nu b\bar c, all isolated and with large pTp_T, at 10−510^{-5} order.Comment: 10 pages + 3 Figures (not included), ReVTeX, NTUTH-94-1

Operadic formulation of topological vertex algebras and Gerstenhaber or Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras

We give the operadic formulation of (weak, strong) topological vertex algebras, which are variants of topological vertex operator algebras studied recently by Lian and Zuckerman. As an application, we obtain a conceptual and geometric construction of the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebraic structure (or the Gerstenhaber algebra structure) on the cohomology of a topological vertex algebra (or of a weak topological vertex algebra) by combining this operadic formulation with a theorem of Getzler (or of Cohen) which formulates Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras (or Gerstenhaber algebras) in terms of the homology of the framed little disk operad (or of the little disk operad).Comment: 42 page

Comparison of SIVmac239(352–382) and SIVsmmPBj41(360–390) enterotoxic synthetic peptides

    Get PDF
AbstractTo characterize the active domain of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) surface unit (SU) enterotoxin, peptides corresponding to the V3 loop of SIVmac239 (SIVmac) and SIVsmmPBj41 (SIVpbj) were synthesized and examined for enterotoxic activity, α-helical structure, and interaction(s) with model membranes. SIVmac and SIVpbj induced a dose-dependent diarrhea in 6–8-day-old mouse pups similar to full-length SU. The peptides mobilized [Ca2+]i in HT-29 cells with distinct oscillations and elevated inositol triphosphate levels. Circular dichroism analyses showed the peptides were predominantly random coil in buffer, but increased in α-helical content when placed in a hydrophobic environment or with cholesterol-containing membrane vesicles that are rich in anionic phospholipids. None of the peptides underwent significant secondary structural changes in the presence of neutral vesicles indicating ionic interactions were important. These data show that the SIV SU enterotoxic domain localizes in part to the V3 loop region and interacts with anionic membrane domains on the host cell surface

Bounds on the mass of the b' quark, revisited

Recent results from the DELPHI collaboration led us to review the present bounds on the b' quark mass. We use all available experimental data for m_b' > 96 GeV to constrain the b' quark mass as a function of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements in a sequential four generations model. We find that there is still room for a b' with a mass larger than 96 GeV.Comment: 9 pages and 7 figures. REVTEX

On Measuring Split-SUSY Neutralino and Chargino Masses at the LHC

In Split-Supersymmetry models, where the only non-Standard Model states produceable at LHC-energies consist of a gluino plus neutralinos and charginos, it is conventionally accepted that only mass differences among these latter are measureable at the LHC. The present work shows that application of a simple `Kinematic Selection' technique allows full reconstruction of neutralino and chargino masses from one event, in principle. A Monte Carlo simulation demonstrates the feasibilty of using this technique at the LHC.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures; EPJC versio

CP violation in Bd,s→l+l−B_{d,s} \to l^+l^- in the model III 2HDM

We have calculated the Wilson coefficients C10,CQiC_{10}, C_{Q_i} (i=1,2) in the MSˉ\bar{MS} renormalization scheme in the model III 2HDM. Using the obtained Wilson coefficients, we have analyzed the CP violation in decays Bq0→l+l−B^0_q\to l^+l^- (q=d,s) in the model. The CP asymmetry, ACPA_{CP}, depends on the parameters of models and ACPA_{CP} in Bd→l+l−B_d\to l^+l^- can be as large as 40% and 35% for l=τl=\tau and l=μl=\mu respectively. It can reach 4% for Bs0B^0_s decays. Because in SM CP violation is smaller than or equal to O(10−310^{-3}) which is unobservably small, an observation of CP asymmetry in the decays Bq0→l+l−(q=d,s)B^0_q \to l^+l^- (q=d,s) would unambiguously signal the existence of new physics.Comment: revtex4, 16 pages, 7 figure

    Lepton Polarization and Forward-Backward Asymmetries in b -> s tau+ tau-

    Get PDF
We study the spin polarizations of both tau leptons in the decay b -> s tau+ tau-. In addition to the polarization asymmetries involving a single tau, we construct asymmetries for the case where both polarizations are simultaneously measured. We also study forward-backward asymmetries with polarized tau's. We find that a large number of asymmetries are predicted to be large, >~ 10%. This permits the measurement of all Wilson coefficients and the b-quark mass, thus allowing the standard model (SM) to be exhaustively tested. Furthermore, there are many unique signals for the presence of new physics. For example, asymmetries involving triple-product correlations are predicted to be tiny within the SM, O(10^{-2}). Their observation would be a clear signal of new physics.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures (included). Paper somewhat reorganized, references greatly expanded, conclusions unchange
