Revealed cardinal preference
I prove that as long as we allow the marginal utility for money (lambda) to
vary between purchases (similarly to the budget) then the quasi-linear and
the ordinal budget-constrained models rationalize the same data. However, we know that lambda is approximately constant. I provide a simple constructive proof for the necessary and sufficient condition for the constant lambda rationalization, which I argue should replace the Generalized Axiom of
Revealed Preference in empirical studies of consumer behavior.
'Go Cardinals!'
It is the minimal requirement of any scientifi c theory that it is consistent with
the data it is trying to explain. In the case of (Hicksian) consumer theory it was
revealed preference -introduced by Samuelson (1938,1948) - that provided an
empirical test to satisfy this need. At that time most of economic reasoning was
done in terms of a competitive general equilibrium, a concept abstract enough
so that it can be built on the ordinal preferences over baskets of goods - even if
the extremely specialized ones of Arrow and Debreu. However, starting in the
sixties, economics has moved beyond the 'invisible hand' explanation of how
-even competitive- markets operate. A seemingly unavoidable step of this
'revolution' was that ever since, most economic research has been carried out
in a partial equilibrium context. Now, the partial equilibrium approach does
not mean that the rest of the markets are ignored, rather that they are held
constant. In other words, there is a special commodity -call it money - that
reflects the trade-offs of moving purchasing power across markets. As a result,
the basic building block of consumer behavior in partial equilibrium is no longer
the consumer's preferences over goods, rather her valuation of them, in terms
of money. This new paradigm necessitates a new theory of revealed preference
Analyticity, Unitarity and One-loop Graviton Corrections to Compton Scattering
We compute spin-flip cross section for graviton photoproduction on a spin-1/2
target of finite mass. Using this tree-level result, we find one-loop graviton
correction to the spin-flip low-energy forward Compton scattering amplitude by
using Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule. We show that this result agrees with the
corresponding perturbative computations, implying the validity of the sum rule
at one-loop level, contrary to the previous claims. We discuss possible effects
from the black hole production and string Regge trajectory exchange at very
high energies. These effects seem to soften the UV divergence present at
one-loop graviton level. Finally, we discuss the relation of these observations
with the models that involve extra dimensions.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Investigating poultry trade patterns to guide avian influenza surveillance and control: a case study in Vietnam
Live bird markets are often the focus of surveillance activities monitoring avian influenza viruses (AIV) circulating in poultry. However, in order to ensure a high sensitivity of virus detection and effectiveness of management actions, poultry management practices features influencing AIV dynamics need to be accounted for in the design of surveillance programmes. In order to address this knowledge gap, a cross-sectional survey was conducted through interviews with 791 traders in 18 Vietnamese live bird markets. Markets greatly differed according to the sources from which poultry was obtained, and their connections to other markets through the movements of their traders. These features, which could be informed based on indicators that are easy to measure, suggest that markets could be used as sentinels for monitoring virus strains circulating in specific segments of the poultry production sector. AIV spread within markets was modelled. Due to the high turn-over of poultry, viral amplification was likely to be minimal in most of the largest markets. However, due to the large number of birds being introduced each day, and challenges related to cleaning and disinfection, environmental accumulation of viruses at markets may take place, posing a threat to the poultry production sector and to public health
State of the Art on Prediction of Concrete Pumping
Large scale constructions needs to estimate a possibility for pumping concrete. In this paper, the state of the art on prediction of concrete pumping including analytical and experimental works is presented. The existing methods to measure the rheological properties of slip layer (or called lubricating layer) are first introduced. Second, based on the rheological properties of slip layer and parent concrete, models to predict concrete pumping (flow rate, pumping pressure, and pumpable distance) are explained. Third, influencing factors on concrete pumping are discussed with the test results of various concrete mixes. Finally, future need for research on concrete pumping is suggested.ope
Establishing the precise evolutionary history of a gene improves prediction of disease-causing missense mutations
PURPOSE: Predicting the phenotypic effects of mutations has become an important application in clinical genetic diagnostics. Computational tools evaluate the behavior of the variant over evolutionary time and assume that variations seen during the course of evolution are probably benign in humans. However, current tools do not take into account orthologous/paralogous relationships. Paralogs have dramatically different roles in Mendelian diseases. For example, whereas inactivating mutations in the NPC1 gene cause the neurodegenerative disorder Niemann-Pick C, inactivating mutations in its paralog NPC1L1 are not disease-causing and, moreover, are implicated in protection from coronary heart disease. METHODS: We identified major events in NPC1 evolution and revealed and compared orthologs and paralogs of the human NPC1 gene through phylogenetic and protein sequence analyses. We predicted whether an amino acid substitution affects protein function by reducing the organism’s fitness. RESULTS: Removing the paralogs and distant homologs improved the overall performance of categorizing disease-causing and benign amino acid substitutions. CONCLUSION: The results show that a thorough evolutionary analysis followed by identification of orthologs improves the accuracy in predicting disease-causing missense mutations. Shortcuts to adiabaticity in a time-dependent box
A method is proposed to drive an ultrafast non-adiabatic dynamics of an
ultracold gas trapped in a box potential. The resulting state is free from
spurious excitations associated with the breakdown of adiabaticity, and
preserves the quantum correlations of the initial state up to a scaling factor.
The process relies on the existence of an adiabatic invariant and the inversion
of the dynamical self-similar scaling law dictated by it. Its physical
implementation generally requires the use of an auxiliary expulsive potential
analogous to those used in soliton control. The method is extended to a broad
family of many-body systems. As illustrative examples we consider the ultrafast
expansion of a Tonks-Girardeau gas and of Bose-Einstein condensates in
different dimensions, where the method exhibits an excellent robustness against
different regimes of interactions and the features of an experimentally

Simultaneous determination of natural and synthetic steroid estrogens and their conjugates in aqueous matrices by liquid chromatography / mass spectrometry
An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of nine free and conjugated steroid estrogens was developed with application to environmental aqueous matrices. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was employed for isolation and concentration, with detection by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) using electrospray ionisation (ESI) in the negative mode. Method recoveries for various aqueous matrices (wastewater, lake and drinking water) were determined, recoveries proving to be sample dependent. When spiked at 50 ng/l concentrations in sewage influent, recoveries ranged from 62-89 % with relative standard deviations (RSD) < 8.1 %. In comparison, drinking water spiked at the same concentrations had recoveries between 82-100 % with an RSD < 5%. Ion suppression is a known phenomenon when using ESI; hence its impact on method recovery was elucidated for raw sewage. Both ion suppression from matrix interferences and the extraction procedure has bearing on the overall method recovery. Analysis of municipal raw sewage identified several of the analytes of interest at ng/l concentrations, estriol (E3) being the most abundant.
