Exploring the Structure of a Neuropsychological Battery across Healthy Elders and Those with Questionable Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a series of confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on 17 variables designed to assess different cognitive abilities in a sample of healthy older adults. In the EFA, 4 factors emerged corresponding to language, memory, processing speed, and fluid ability constructs. The results of the confirmatory factor analyses suggested that a 5-factor model with an additional Attention factor improved the fit. The invariance of the 5-factor model was examined across 3 groups: a group of cognitively healthy older adults, a group of patients diagnosed with questionable dementia (QD), and a group of patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD). Results of the invariance analysis suggest that the model may have configural invariance across the 3 groups but not metric invariance. Specifically, preliminary analyses suggest that the memory construct may represent something different in the QD and AD groups as compared to the healthy older adult group, consistent with the underlying pathology in early AD
Structural dichroism in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of V_2O_3
We performed near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) at V K edge in
the antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) phase of a 2.8% Cr-doped V_2O_3 single
crystal. Linear dichroism of several percent is measured in the hexagonal plane
and found to be in good agreement with ab-initio calculations based on multiple
scattering theory. This experiment definitively proves the structural origin of
the signal and therefore solves a controversy raised by previous
interpretations of the same dichroism as non-reciprocal. It also calls for a
further investigation of the role of the magnetoelectric annealing procedure in

Relation among concentrations of incorporated Mn atoms, ionized Mn acceptors, and holes in p-(Ga,Mn)As epilayers
The amount of ionized Mn acceptors in various p-type Mn-doped GaAs epilayers
has been evaluated by electrochemical capacitance-voltage measurements, and has
been compared systematically with concentrations of incorporated Mn atoms and
holes for wide range of Mn concentration (10^17 ~ 10^21 cm^-3). Quantitative
assessment of anomalous Hall effect at room temperature is also carried out for

Characterization of nanometer-sized, mechanically exfoliated graphene on the H-passivated Si(100) surface using scanning tunnelling microscopy
We have developed a method for depositing graphene monolayers and bilayers
with minimum lateral dimensions of 2-10 nm by the mechanical exfoliation of
graphite onto the Si(100)-2x1:H surface. Room temperature, ultra-high vacuum
(UHV) tunnelling spectroscopy measurements of nanometer-sized single-layer
graphene reveal a size dependent energy gap ranging from 0.1-1 eV. Furthermore,
the number of graphene layers can be directly determined from scanning
tunnelling microscopy (STM) topographic contours. This atomistic study provides
an experimental basis for probing the electronic structure of nanometer-sized
graphene which can assist the development of graphene-based nanoelectronics.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nanotechnolog
Origin of atomic clusters during ion sputtering
Previous studies have shown that the size distributions of small clusters ( n<=40 n = number of atoms/cluster) generated by sputtering obey an inverse power law with an exponent between -8 and -4. Here we report electron microscopy studies of the size distributions of larger clusters ( n>=500) sputtered by high-energy ion impacts. These new measurements also yield an inverse power law, but one with an exponent of -2 and one independent of sputtering yield, indicating that the large clusters are produced when shock waves, generated by subsurface displacement cascades, ablate the surface
Intravenous angiotensin II for the treatment of high-output shock (ATHOS trial): a pilot study
Introduction: Patients with distributive shock who require high dose vasopressors have a high mortality. Angiotensin II (ATII) may prove useful in patients who remain hypotensive despite catecholamine and vasopressin therapy. The appropriate dose of parenteral angiotensin II for shock is unknown.
Methods: In total, 20 patients with distributive shock and a cardiovascular Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score of 4 were randomized to either ATII infusion (N?=?10) or placebo (N?=?10) plus standard of care. ATII was started at a dose of 20?ng/kg/min, and titrated for a goal of maintaining a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 65?mmHg. The infusion (either ATII or placebo) was continued for 6?hours then titrated off. The primary endpoint was the effect of ATII on the standing dose of norepinephrine required to maintain a MAP of 65?mmHg.
Results: ATII resulted in marked reduction in norepinephrine dosing in all patients. The mean hour 1 norepinephrine dose for the placebo cohort was 27.6???29.3 mcg/min versus 7.4???12.4 mcg/min for the ATII cohort (P?=?0.06). The most common adverse event attributable to ATII was hypertension, which occurred in 20% of patients receiving ATII. 30-day mortality for the ATII cohort and the placebo cohort was similar (50% versus 60%, P?=?1.00).
Conclusion: Angiotensin II is an effective rescue vasopressor agent in patients with distributive shock requiring multiple vasopressors. The initial dose range of ATII that appears to be appropriate for patients with distributive shock is 2 to 10?ng/kg/min.

X-ray photoemission study of NiS_{2-x}Se_x (x = 0.0 - 1.2)
Electronic structure of NiS_{2-x}Se_x system has been investigated for
various compositions (x) using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. An analysis of
the core level as well as the valence band spectra of NiS_2 in conjunction with
many-body cluster calculations provides a quantitative description of the
electronic structure of this compound. With increasing Se content, the on-site
Coulomb correlation strength (U) does not change, while the band width W of the
system increases, driving the system from a covalent insulating state to a

Hydration interactions: aqueous solvent effects in electric double layers
A model for ionic solutions with an attractive short-range pair interaction
between the ions is presented. The short-range interaction is accounted for by
adding a quadratic non-local term to the Poisson-Boltzmann free energy. The
model is used to study solvent effects in a planar electric double layer. The
counter-ion density is found to increase near the charged surface, as compared
with the Poisson-Boltzmann theory, and to decrease at larger distances. The ion
density profile is studied analytically in the case where the ion distribution
near the plate is dominated only by counter-ions. Further away from the plate
the density distribution can be described using a Poisson-Boltzmann theory with

Genome wide association and linkage analyses identified three loci-4q25, 17q23.2, and 10q11.21-associated with variation in leukocyte telomere length: the Long Life Family Study
Leukocyte telomere length is believed to measure cellular aging in humans, and short leukocyte telomere length is associated with increased risks of late onset diseases, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, etc. Many studies have shown that leukocyte telomere length is a heritable trait, and several candidate genes have been identified, including TERT, TERC, OBFC1, and CTC1. Unlike most studies that have focused on genetic causes of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes in relation to leukocyte telomere length, the present study examined the genome to identify variants that may contribute to variation in leukocyte telomere length among families with exceptional longevity. From the genome wide association analysis in 4,289 LLFS participants, we identified a novel intergenic SNP rs7680468 located near PAPSS1 and DKK2 on 4q25 (p = 4.7E-8). From our linkage analysis, we identified two additional novel loci with HLOD scores exceeding three, including 4.77 for 17q23.2, and 4.36 for 10q11.21. These two loci harbor a number of novel candidate genes with SNPs, and our gene-wise association analysis identified multiple genes, including DCAF7, POLG2, CEP95, and SMURF2 at 17q23.2; and RASGEF1A, HNRNPF, ANF487, CSTF2T, and PRKG1 at 10q11.21. Among these genes, multiple SNPs were associated with leukocyte telomere length, but the strongest association was observed with one contiguous haplotype in CEP95 and SMURF2. We also show that three previously reported genes—TERC, MYNN, and OBFC1—were significantly associated with leukocyte telomere length at p(empirical) < 0.05
