A Case of Acquired Leucoderma, Associated with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
A 67-year-old female diagnosed as Hashimoto's thyroiditis in company with acquired leucoderma was reported. She first noticed the enlarged thyroid at the age of 36, and thereafter leucoderma made its appearance 30 years later. Though a significant association between these two diseases has been found in the literature thus far and they are considered to be of autoimmune origin, their coexistence is not so common clinically. In spite of PUVA treatment, a benefit effect was not obtained completely

Processing of Semi-Solid Gray Cast Iron Using the Cooling Plate Technique
A semi-solid processing technique combining a cooling plate and various mold materials is developed to produce high quality gray cast iron components. Flow behavior of semi-solid slurry along an inclined cooling plate is studied to establish the effect of plate orientation on the integrity of cast products. The concept of multiple-stage cooling is discussed by considering cooling rates at different stages of processing along the cooling plate and in sand, graphite and metallic molds to show the significance of cooling rate in determining component microstructure. The morphology of microstructure in cast components is discussed and image analysis results presented. A refined microstructure of primary austenite and graphite, and their characteristics associated with the use of different mold materials are reported. Angle of inclination of plate is shown to influence the morphology and quantity of precipitated phases. Finally, the effects of cooling plate and mold material on Vickers hardness and mechanical strength of cast components are discussed
Chemo-Sensitive Running Droplet
Chemical control of the spontaneous motion of a reactive oil droplet moving
on a glass substrate under an aqueous phase is reported. Experimental results
show that the self-motion of an oil droplet is confined on an acid-treated
glass surface. The transient behavior of oil-droplet motion is also observed
with a high-speed video camera. A mathematical model that incorporates the
effect of the glass surface charge is built based on the experimental
observation of oil-droplet motion. A numerical simulation of this mathematical
model reproduced the essential features concerning confinement within a certain
chemical territory of oil-droplet motion, and also its transient behavior. Our
results may shed light on physical aspects of reactive spreading and a
chemotaxis in living things.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Salvage surgery with a tumor prosthesis for femoral condylar nonunion at the very advanced age of 90 years
We report an unusual case of multifragmentary condylar femoral nonunion with severe synovitis and bone loss in a 90-year-old woman. Initially, conservative treatment of the condylar femoral fracture was indicated because the fracture was severely comminuted and the patient was very advanced in age. The fracture failed to heal. Salvage surgery with a total knee tumor endoprosthetic replacement was performed. Four years postoperatively, the patient was walking without knee pain using a walker. We believe that the present results justify the use of a megaprosthesis in the treatment of benign conditions even in very elderly patients. © 2012
