    Five-minute resolved spatial distribution of radiocesium in sea sediment derived from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant

    AbstractThe spatial distributions of radiocesium concentration in sea sediment to a core depth of 14 cm were investigated in the offshore region from the Fukushima Prefecture to the northern part of the Ibaraki Prefecture in February and July 2012, at a spatial resolution of 5 min of latitude and longitude. The concentrations in the area south of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) were generally higher than those in the area north of it. In the southern area, a band of especially high concentration with a width about 20 km was present in the region shallower than 100 m, and a narrow minimal concentration band was found along the 200-m isobaths. In more than half of all cases, the vertical core profiles of radiocesium concentration generally showed an exponential decreasing trend with depth. However, in the area north of the FDNPP, where the radiocesium concentrations tended to be very low, radiocesium concentrations that had similar or larger magnitude compared with those of the most-surface layer were often found in deeper layers. Relatively good correlations were found between radiocesium concentrations and grain sizes of the most-surface sediment. The vertical profile of radiocesium concentration also had a relationship with grain size. In other case, the radiocesium concentration in the sediment seems to have had a dependence on the radiocesium concentration in bottom seawater, suggesting that the quantity of radiocesium supplied and the grain size were major factors determining the spatial distribution pattern of the radiocesium concentration after the FDNPP accident

    Twenty barrel in situ pipe gun type solid hydrogen pellet injector for the Large Helical Device

    A 20 barrel solid hydrogen pellet injector, which is able to inject 20 cylindrical pellets with a diameter and length of between 3.0 and 3.8 mm at the velocity of 1200 m/s, has been developed for the purpose of direct core fueling in LHD (Large Helical Device). The in situ pipe gun concept with the use of compact cryo-coolers enables stable operation as a fundamental facility in plasma experiments. The combination of the two types of pellet injection timing control modes, i.e., pre-programing mode and real-time control mode, allows the build-up and sustainment of high density plasma around the density limit. The pellet injector has demonstrated stable operation characteristics during the past three years of LHD experiments

    Effects of follow-on therapy after denosumab discontinuation in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis

    Objectives: To clarify the effects of follow-on therapy after denosumab (DMAb) discontinuation. Methods: In this retrospective, multicenter study, postmenopausal patients with osteoporosis who were previously treated by oral bisphosphonates (BP) (n = 26) or teriparatide (TPTD) (n = 27) were switched to DMAb (administered 2.6 times), and then discontinued. Patients (73.1 years, T-scores of the lumbar spine [LS] − 2.7 and femoral neck [FN] − 2.2) were switched to either (1) raloxifene (RAL) (n = 13) or BP [(2) weekly or monthly BP (wmBP) (n = 29) or (3) zoledronate (ZOL) (n = 11)], based on each physician’s decision (mean interval after final DMAb administration was 7.2 months). Bone mineral density (BMD) at final DMAb administration were set as baseline. Results: Changes in LS BMD at 1.5 years after final DMAb administration were −2.7% in the RAL, 0.7% in the wmBP, and 1.9% in the ZOL (p =.31 between groups), and in FN BMD were −3.8%, −0.8%, and 1.8%, respectively (p =.02 between the RAL and ZOL; p =.048 between the RAL and BP). Clinical vertebral fracture incidence during 1.5 years after final DMAb administration was 23.1% in the RAL, 3.4% in the wmBP, and 0.0% in the ZOL (p =.048 between the RAL and ZOL; p =.015 between the RAL and BP). No significant differences were observed in these parameters between the wmBP and ZOL. Conclusion: These results may contribute to the selection of adequate follow-on therapy after DMAb discontinuation, although further investigations are required.Ebina K., Hashimoto J., Kashii M., et al.     Impact of combining medial capsule interposition with modified scarf osteotomy for hallux valgus

    Objectives: To clarify the effect of combining medial capsule interposition with modified scarf osteotomy for hallux valgus. Methods: A multicenter, retrospective study included 64 cases [59 osteoarthritis patients (excluding rheumatoid arthritis); age 68.8 years, range 40–93 years] of modified scarf osteotomy which were performed from 2013 to 2017 and followed for 26.6 (range, 13–50) months. Patients were treated by either (1) without medial capsule interposition (33 cases) or (2) combined with interposition (31 cases) at each senior surgeon’s discretion. The Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot (JSSF) hallux metatarsophalangeal (MTP)-interphalangeal scale was evaluated along with radiographic parameters (hallux valgus angle [HVA], first and second metatarsals intermetatarsal angles, and Hardy grade). Results: All JSSF scale and radiographic parameters were similar at baseline and significantly improved at final follow-up in both groups (pre-operation vs. final follow-up: p <.001). However, compared to without interposition group, interposition group showed significantly higher improvement in the JSSF scale (pre-operation to final follow-up: p value between the two groups at final follow-up) for pain (without interposition: 19.4–34.2, interposition: 18.4–37.1; p =.02), function (without interposition: 20.8–33.6, interposition: 18.3–36.6; p =.005), total score (without interposition: 41.5–81.8, interposition: 38.5–88.5; p <.001), and the MTP joint space (without interposition: 1.4–1.5 mm, interposition: 1.6–2.6 mm; p <.001) with significant correlation between the total JSSF score (r =.40; p =.001).     Daytime site characterisation of La Palma, and its relation to night-time conditions

    This paper presents preliminary daytime profiles taken using a Wide-Field Shack-Hartmann Sensor at the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST), La Palma. These are contrasted against Stereo-SCIDAR data from corresponding nights to assess the validity of the assumptions currently used for simulating the performances of possible Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems for future solar telescopes, especially the assumption that the structure of the high altitude turbulence is mostly similar between the day and the night. We find that for our data both the altitude and the strength of the turbulence differ between the day and the night, although more data is required to draw any conclusions about typical behaviour and conditions

    A report of three cases which required tibialis anterior tendon resection to recover delayed wound healing after total ankle arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Delayed wound healing is one of the severe complications after total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). In particular, once tibialis anterior (TA) tendon is exposed from tendon sheath of extensor retinaculum, wound healing will be critically intractable. We report three cases (mean age: 75.3 years old) of delayed wound healing after TAA cured by resection of TA tendon in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). All three cases underwent TAA through an anterior approach, with careful suture of extensor retinaculum in wound closure. Ankle joint was fixed with splint and avoid weight bearing for three weeks after surgery. Delayed wound healing with TA tendon exposure was observed, and initially treated by debridement, basic fibroblast growth factor spray, and negative pressure wound therapy, which all failed to obtain wound healing. Finally, complete resection of TA tendon led to rapid wound healing. In all cases, ankle dorsal flexion was compensated by other extensors, with maintained range of motion and muscle strength (manual muscle testing 3 to 4) compared to pre-operation at 1 year after TAA operation. Resection of TA tendon may be considered as one of the salvage treatment options of severe delayed wound healing in TAA with anterior approach, especially in elderly patients.Etani Y., Ebina K., Hirao M., et al.     First Detection of NaI D lines in High-Redshift Damped Lyman-alpha Systems

    A Near-infrared (1.18-1.35 micron) high-resolution spectrum of the gravitationally-lensed QSO APM 08279+5255 was obtained with the IRCS mounted on the Subaru Telescope using the AO system. We detected strong NaI D 5891,5897 doublet absorption in high-redshift DLAs at z=1.062 and 1.181, confirming the presence of NaI, which was first reported for the rest-frame UV NaI 3303.3,3303.9 doublet by Petitjean et al. This is the first detection of NaI D absorption in a high-redshift (z>1) DLA. In addition, we detected a new NaI component in the z=1.062 DLA and four new components in the z=1.181 DLA. Using an empirical relationship between NaI and HI column density, we found that all "components" have large HI column density, so that each component is classified as DLA absorption. We also detected strong NaI D absorption associated with a MgII system at z=1.173. Because no other metal absorption lines were detected in this system at the velocity of the NaI absorption in previously reported optical spectra (observed 3.6 years ago), we interpret this NaI absorption cloud probably appeared in the line of sight toward the QSO after the optical observation. This newly found cloud is likely to be a DLA based upon its large estimated HI column density. We found that the N(NaI)/N(CaII) ratios in these DLAs are systematically smaller than those observed in the Galaxy; they are more consistent with the ratios seen in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is consistent with dust depletion generally being smaller in lower metallicity environments. However, all five clouds of the z=1.181 system have a high N(NaI)/N(CaII) ratio, which is characteristic of cold dense gas. We tentatively suggest that the host galaxy of this system may be the most significant contributor to the gravitational-lens toward APM 08279+5255.Comment: 22 pages, 6 Postscript figures, 3 tables, ApJ in press (Vol.643, 2 June 2006

    NB-LRR-encoding genes conferring susceptibility to organophosphate pesticides in sorghum

    Organophosphate is the commonly used pesticide to control pest outbreak, such as those by aphids in many crops. Despite its wide use, however, necrotic lesion and/or cell death following the application of organophosphate pesticides has been reported to occur in several species. To understand this phenomenon, called organophosphate pesticide sensitivity (OPS) in sorghum, we conducted QTL analysis in a recombinant inbred line derived from the Japanese cultivar NOG, which exhibits OPS. Mapping OPS in this population identified a prominent QTL on chromosome 5, which corresponded to Organophosphate-Sensitive Reaction (OSR) reported previously in other mapping populations. The OSR locus included a cluster of three genes potentially encoding nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR, NLR) proteins, among which NLR-C was considered to be responsible for OPS in a dominant fashion. NLR-C was functional in NOG, whereas the other resistant parent, BTx623, had a null mutation caused by the deletion of promoter sequences. Our finding of OSR as a dominant trait is important not only in understanding the diversified role of NB-LRR proteins in cereals but also in securing sorghum breeding free from OPS
