    Debating standard language ideology in the classroom:Using the speak good English movement to raise awareness of Global Englishes

    In this article, we describe and evaluate an innovative pedagogical task designed to raise awareness of Global Englishes and to challenge standard language ideology in an English language classroom. The task encouraged the learning and debate of the controversial Speak Good English Movement, which campaigns for Singaporeans to use a ‘standard’ form of English rather than the local variety, ‘Singlish’. The debate was introduced as a Global Englishes-inspired multi-lesson task at a Japanese university with 108 students in four classes. Data were collected in the form of written reflections, in which learners stated their own positions and beliefs. Data indicated that the majority sided against the Speak Good English Movement, viewing Singlish as a legitimate variety of English with important cultural attributes, which contributed to a national identity. Results showed that the debate achieved the aim of encouraging students to critically reflect on standard language ideology in both English and Japanese, their mother tongue. Overall, the activity was successful in raising awareness of the diversity of English, and encouraging critical reflection on the complexities surrounding standard language beliefs. This was seen to be essential given the dominance of the ‘native’ speaker episteme in Japanese language curricula

    Adopting the Discovery Method to Develop Linguistic Competence Among International Students: Experience from Russia and Belarus

    The article addresses linguistic competence and the importance of its formation for academic and professional purposes. It also posits that linguistic competence is an important part of the communicative one. The Discovery Method is proposed as a privileged tool when teaching international students to apply the norms and rules established in a language. In this article the authors give a number of reasons why this method should be used, and how to apply it during English teaching process in a class. The research is based on the data collected during English and Russian classes and is conducted in three universities by means of observation, discussion, interview, and questionnaire. The article proposes a set of 3 tables of descriptors to assess the student’s linguistic competence in three types of class activities: translation, writing, and reading. It also introduces a framework of exercises for teachers who wish to use the Discovery Method. Theoretical ground has been set for further research, focusing on the results of using the Discovery Method for linguistic competence formation

    Biochemical Comparison of Anopheles gambiae and Human NADPH P450 Reductases Reveals Different 2′-5′-ADP and FMN Binding Traits

    NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (CPR) plays a central role in chemical detoxification and insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae, the major vector for malaria. Anopheles gambiae CPR (AgCPR) was initially expressed in Eschericia coli but failed to bind 2′, 5′-ADP Sepharose. To investigate this unusual trait, we expressed and purified a truncated histidine-tagged version for side-by-side comparisons with human CPR. Close functional similarities were found with respect to the steady state kinetics of cytochrome c reduction, with rates (kcat) of 105 s−1 and 88 s−1, respectively, for mosquito and human CPR. However, the inhibitory effects of 2′,5′-ADP on activity were different; the IC50 value of AgCPR for 2′, 5′ –ADP was significantly higher (6–10 fold) than human CPR (hCPR) in both phosphate and phosphate-free buffer, indicative of a decrease in affinity for 2′, 5′- ADP. This was confirmed by isothermal titration calorimetry where binding of 2′,5′-ADP to AgCPR (Kd = 410±18 nM) was ∼10 fold weaker than human CPR (Kd = 38 nM). Characterisation of the individual AgFMN binding domain revealed much weaker binding of FMN (Kd = 83±2.0 nM) than the equivalent human domain (Kd = 23±0.9 nM). Furthermore, AgCPR was an order of magnitude more sensitive than hCPR to the reductase inhibitor diphenyliodonium chloride (IC50 = 28 µM±2 and 361±31 µM respectively). Taken together, these results reveal unusual biochemical differences between mosquito CPR and the human form in the binding of small molecules that may aid the development of ‘smart’ insecticides and synergists that selectively target mosquito CPR

    Swearing, Euphemisms, and Linguistic Relativity

    Participants read aloud swear words, euphemisms of the swear words, and neutral stimuli while their autonomic activity was measured by electrodermal activity. The key finding was that autonomic responses to swear words were larger than to euphemisms and neutral stimuli. It is argued that the heightened response to swear words reflects a form of verbal conditioning in which the phonological form of the word is directly associated with an affective response. Euphemisms are effective because they replace the trigger (the offending word form) by another word form that expresses a similar idea. That is, word forms exert some control on affect and cognition in turn. We relate these findings to the linguistic relativity hypothesis, and suggest a simple mechanistic account of how language may influence thinking in this context

    A multi-country study of intussusception in children under 2 years of age in Latin America: analysis of prospective surveillance data

    BACKGROUND: Intussusception (IS) is a form of acute intestinal obstruction that occurs mainly in infants and is usually of unknown cause. An association between IS and the first licensed rotavirus vaccine, a reassortant-tetravalent, rhesus-based rotavirus vaccine (RRV-TV), led to the withdrawal of the vaccine. New rotavirus vaccines have now been developed and extensively studied for their potential association with IS. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology and to estimate the incidence of IS in Latin American infants prior to new vaccine introduction. METHODS: Children under 2 years of age representing potential IS cases were enrolled in 16 centers in 11 Latin American countries from January 2003 to May 2005. IS cases were classified as definite, probable, possible or suspected as stated on the Brighton Collaboration Working Group guidelines. RESULTS: From 517 potential cases identified, 476 (92%) cases were classified as definite, 21 probable, 10 possible and 10 suspected for intussusception. Among the 476 definite IS cases, the median age at presentation was 6.4 months with 89% of cases aged <1 year. The male to female ratio was 1.5:1. The incidence of definite IS per 100,000 subject-years ranged from 1.9 in Brazil to 62.4 in Argentina for children <2 years of age, and from 3.8 in Brazil to 105.3 in Argentina for children aged <1 year. Median hospital stay was 4 days with a high prevalence of surgery as the primary treatment (65%). Most cases (88%) made a complete recovery, but 13 (3%) died. No clear seasonal pattern of IS cases emerged. CONCLUSIONS: This study describes the epidemiology and estimates the incidence of IS in Latin American infants prior to the introduction of new rotavirus vaccines.
