Marginal Release Under Local Differential Privacy
Many analysis and machine learning tasks require the availability of marginal
statistics on multidimensional datasets while providing strong privacy
guarantees for the data subjects. Applications for these statistics range from
finding correlations in the data to fitting sophisticated prediction models. In
this paper, we provide a set of algorithms for materializing marginal
statistics under the strong model of local differential privacy. We prove the
first tight theoretical bounds on the accuracy of marginals compiled under each
approach, perform empirical evaluation to confirm these bounds, and evaluate
them for tasks such as modeling and correlation testing. Our results show that
releasing information based on (local) Fourier transformations of the input is
preferable to alternatives based directly on (local) marginals

Grid services for the MAGIC experiment
Exploring signals from the outer space has become an observational science
under fast expansion. On the basis of its advanced technology the MAGIC
telescope is the natural building block for the first large scale ground based
high energy gamma-ray observatory. The low energy threshold for gamma-rays
together with different background sources leads to a considerable amount of
data. The analysis will be done in different institutes spread over Europe.
Therefore MAGIC offers the opportunity to use the Grid technology to setup a
distributed computational and data intensive analysis system with the nowadays
available technology. Benefits of Grid computing for the MAGIC telescope are

Occupy: in theory and practice
This paper situates the discourse of the Occupy movement within the context of radical political philosophy. Our analysis takes place on two levels. First, we conduct an empirical analysis of the âofficialâ publications of Occupy Wall Street (OWS) and Occupy London (OL). Operationalising core concepts from the framing perspective within social movement theory, we provide a descriptive-comparative analysis of the âcollective action framesâ of OWS and OL. Second, we consider the extent to which radical political philosophy speaks to the discourse of Occupy. Our empirical analysis reveals that both movements share diagnostic frames, but there were notable differences in terms of prognostic framing. The philosophical discussion suggests that there are alignments between anarchist, post-anarchist and post-Marxist ideologies at the level of both identity and strategy. Indeed, the absence of totalising anti-capitalist or anti-statist positions in Occupy suggests that â particularly with Occupy London â alignments are perhaps not so distant from typically social democratic demands
Differentially Private Model Selection with Penalized and Constrained Likelihood
In statistical disclosure control, the goal of data analysis is twofold: The
released information must provide accurate and useful statistics about the
underlying population of interest, while minimizing the potential for an
individual record to be identified. In recent years, the notion of differential
privacy has received much attention in theoretical computer science, machine
learning, and statistics. It provides a rigorous and strong notion of
protection for individuals' sensitive information. A fundamental question is
how to incorporate differential privacy into traditional statistical inference
procedures. In this paper we study model selection in multivariate linear
regression under the constraint of differential privacy. We show that model
selection procedures based on penalized least squares or likelihood can be made
differentially private by a combination of regularization and randomization,
and propose two algorithms to do so. We show that our private procedures are
consistent under essentially the same conditions as the corresponding
non-private procedures. We also find that under differential privacy, the
procedure becomes more sensitive to the tuning parameters. We illustrate and
evaluate our method using simulation studies and two real data examples
No measure for culture? Value in the new economy
This paper explores articulations of the value of investment in culture and the arts through a critical discourse analysis of policy documents, reports and academic commentary since 1997. It argues that in this period, discourses around the value of culture have moved from a focus on the direct economic contributions of the culture industries to their indirect economic benefits. These indirect benefits are discussed here under three main headings: creativity and innovation, employability, and social inclusion. These are in turn analysed in terms of three forms of capital: human, social and cultural. The paper concludes with an analysis of this discursive shift through the lens of autonomist Marxist concerns with the labour of social reproduction. It is our argument that, in contemporary policy discourses on culture and the arts, the government in the UK is increasingly concerned with the use of culture to form the social in the image of capital. As such, we must turn our attention beyond the walls of the factory in order to understand the contemporary capitalist production of value and resistance to it. </jats:p
A comparison of direct versus self-report measures for assessing physical activity in adults: a systematic review
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Accurate assessment is required to assess current and changing physical activity levels, and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions designed to increase activity levels. This study systematically reviewed the literature to determine the extent of agreement between subjectively (self-report e.g. questionnaire, diary) and objectively (directly measured; e.g. accelerometry, doubly labeled water) assessed physical activity in adults.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eight electronic databases were searched to identify observational and experimental studies of adult populations. Searching identified 4,463 potential articles. Initial screening found that 293 examined the relationship between self-reported and directly measured physical activity and met the eligibility criteria. Data abstraction was completed for 187 articles, which described comparable data and/or comparisons, while 76 articles lacked comparable data or comparisons, and a further 30 did not meet the review's eligibility requirements. A risk of bias assessment was conducted for all articles from which data was abstracted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Correlations between self-report and direct measures were generally low-to-moderate and ranged from -0.71 to 0.96. No clear pattern emerged for the mean differences between self-report and direct measures of physical activity. Trends differed by measure of physical activity employed, level of physical activity measured, and the gender of participants. Results of the risk of bias assessment indicated that 38% of the studies had lower quality scores.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings suggest that the measurement method may have a significant impact on the observed levels of physical activity. Self-report measures of physical activity were both higher and lower than directly measured levels of physical activity, which poses a problem for both reliance on self-report measures and for attempts to correct for self-report â direct measure differences. This review reveals the need for valid, accurate and reliable measures of physical activity in evaluating current and changing physical activity levels, physical activity interventions, and the relationships between physical activity and health outcomes.</p
Gene repositioning within the cell nucleus is not random and is determined by its genomic neighborhood
Background: Heterochromatin has been reported to be a major silencing compartment during development and differentiation. Prominent heterochromatin compartments are located at the nuclear periphery and inside the nucleus (e.g., pericentric heterochromatin). Whether the position of a gene in relation to some or all heterochromatin compartments matters remains a matter of debate, which we have addressed in this study. Answering this question demanded solving the technical challenges of 3D measurements and the large-scale morphological changes accompanying cellular differentiation. Results: Here, we investigated the proximity effects of the nuclear periphery and pericentric heterochromatin on gene expression and additionally considered the effect of neighboring genomic features on a gene's nuclear position. Using a well-established myogenic in vitro differentiation system and a differentiation-independent heterochromatin remodeling system dependent on ectopic MeCP2 expression, we first identified genes with statistically significant expression changes by transcriptional profiling. We identified nuclear gene positions by 3D fluorescence in situ hybridization followed by 3D distance measurements toward constitutive and facultative heterochromatin domains. Single-cell-based normalization enabled us to acquire morphologically unbiased data and we finally correlated changes in gene positioning to changes in transcriptional profiles. We found no significant correlation of gene silencing and proximity to constitutive heterochromatin and a rather unexpected inverse correlation of gene activity and position relative to facultative heterochromatin at the nuclear periphery. Conclusion: In summary, our data question the hypothesis of heterochromatin as a general silencing compartment. Nonetheless, compared to a simulated random distribution, we found that genes are not randomly located within the nucleus. An analysis of neighboring genomic context revealed that gene location within the nucleus is rather dependent on CpG islands, GC content, gene density, and short and long interspersed nuclear elements, collectively known as RIDGE (regions of increased gene expression) properties. Although genes do not move away/to the heterochromatin upon up-/down-regulation, genomic regions with RIDGE properties are generally excluded from peripheral heterochromatin. Hence, we suggest that individual gene activity does not influence gene positioning, but rather chromosomal context matters for sub-nuclear location
