SFX Label & Options Menu - Comparative Analysis

    Get PDF
The study looked at a number of other library sites to see what labels were being used for SFX or SFX-like buttons, as well as what options they had for Document Delivery. We compared these labels with what had been done on our own site.SFX is a tool provided by the University Library that creates shortcuts to the full-text of online articles, as well as links to other Library services. When searching in many of the University Library databases, there will be an SFX button or link that connects to a menu of options.Usability Grouphttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107028/1/SFX_comp_eval.pd

Deep Blue Institutional Repository - Expert Evaluations

    Get PDF
Several Library colleagues reviewed the Deep Blue environment within their context as reference librarians. The questionnaire was designed to discover how experts in search and retrieval would deposit, search, and browse within Deep Blue.Deep Blue (http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/) is the University of Michigan's service for representing U-M's rich intellectual environment. The primary goal of Deep Blue is to provide access to the work that makes Michigan a leader in research, teaching, and creativity. It represents UM's scholars-- from faculty through students-- as individuals and as members of communities, and provides a framework for preserving and finding the best scholarly and artistic work done at the University. Deep Blue runs using DSpace technology.Usability Grouphttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107020/1/DeepBlue_expert_eval.pd

Enhancing Search and Browse Using Automated Clustering of Subject Metadata

The Web puzzle of online information resources often hinders end-users from effective and efficient access to these resources. Clustering resources into appropriate subject-based groupings may help alleviate these difficulties, but will it work with heterogeneous material? The University of Michigan and the University of California Irvine joined forces to test automatically enhancing metadata records using the Topic Modeling algorithm on the varied OAIster corpus. We created labels for the resulting clusters of metadata records, matched the clusters to an in-house classification system, and developed a prototype that would showcase methods for search and retrieval using the enhanced records. Results indicated that while the algorithm was somewhat time-intensive to run and using a local classification scheme had its drawbacks, precise clustering of records was achieved and the prototype interface proved that faceted classification could be powerful in helping end-users find resources.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/58766/1/07hagedorn.pd

Current Developments and Future Trends for the OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting

    Get PDF
The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) has been widely adopted since its initial release in 2001. Initially developed as a means to federate access to diverse e-print archives through metadata harvesting and aggregation, the protocol has demonstrated its potential usefulness to a broad range of communities. Two years out from the release of the stable production version of the protocol (2.0), there are many interesting developments within the OAI community. Communities of interest have begun to use the protocol to aggregate metadata relative to their needs. The development of a registry of OAI data providers with browsing and searching capabilities as well as accessibility to machine processing is helping to provide a scalable solution to the question of who is providing what via the OAI protocol. Work is progressing on the technical infrastructure for extending the OAI protocol beyond the traditional harvesting structure. However, serious challenges, particularly for service providers, still exist. This paper provides an overview of the current OAI environment and speculates on future directions for the protocol and OAI community.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/59513/1/Shreevesetal_576-589_LT_53_4.pd

Findings from interviews with graduates and undergraduates experienced in using the library website for research. The Usability Group conducted a series of interviews with 10 experienced users to study how they interact with the library website and what online services they value. We also hoped to identify what resources experienced users were missing or struggling with, and gain insights into how to help them utilize our resources more efficiently.Usability Grouphttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/106784/1/Interviews_Experienced_Users_0.pd
