Analysis and characterization of enhanced kinetic reaction on ozone generation using negative corona discharge
Background and objective: Ozone gas has been used in microorganism treatment and is known as one of the strongest oxidizing agents. The main limitation of ozone is decay rapidly due to its short halflife. In this study, a novel method was established to enhance the production of ozonated water with lower decomposition time. Materials and method: The newly developed prototype was designed with improved technology to increase the kinetic reaction between ozone and water utilizing the parameters of high pressure and continuous flow. Ozonated water produced was examined using dissolved ozone meter with maximum detection of 20 mg L−1 . The reaction and decomposition modeling of this system was developed and the dynamic structure of produced ozonated water was investigated using Raman spectroscopy. Results: The findings showed that the newly developed prototype facilitates a higher concentration of ozonated water with an ozone transfer rate of 2.5 L min−1 and a lower decomposition rate with an average half-life 200 min. The results obtained from Raman spectroscopy showed the increases in ozonated water concentration leading to a decrease in the intensity of Raman peak, more likely approaching the Raman intensity of distilled water. Conclusion: This system was proven to be efficient in producing ozonated water at high volume and concentration with longer half-life which suits the domestic and industrial application requirements
A Generalization of Otsu's Method and Minimum Error Thresholding
We present Generalized Histogram Thresholding (GHT), a simple, fast, and
effective technique for histogram-based image thresholding. GHT works by
performing approximate maximum a posteriori estimation of a mixture of
Gaussians with appropriate priors. We demonstrate that GHT subsumes three
classic thresholding techniques as special cases: Otsu's method, Minimum Error
Thresholding (MET), and weighted percentile thresholding. GHT thereby enables
the continuous interpolation between those three algorithms, which allows
thresholding accuracy to be improved significantly. GHT also provides a
clarifying interpretation of the common practice of coarsening a histogram's
bin width during thresholding. We show that GHT outperforms or matches the
performance of all algorithms on a recent challenge for handwritten document
image binarization (including deep neural networks trained to produce per-pixel
binarizations), and can be implemented in a dozen lines of code or as a trivial
modification to Otsu's method or MET.Comment: ECCV 202
A combined transmission spectrum of the Earth-sized exoplanets TRAPPIST-1 b and c
Three Earth-sized exoplanets were recently discovered close to the habitable
zone of the nearby ultracool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. The nature of these planets
has yet to be determined, since their masses remain unmeasured and no
observational constraint is available for the planetary population surrounding
ultracool dwarfs, of which the TRAPPIST-1 planets are the first transiting
example. Theoretical predictions span the entire atmospheric range from
depleted to extended hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Here, we report a
space-based measurement of the combined transmission spectrum of the two inner
planets made possible by a favorable alignment resulting in their simultaneous
transits on 04 May 2016. The lack of features in the combined spectrum rules
out cloud-free hydrogen-dominated atmospheres for each planet at 10-
levels; TRAPPIST-1 b and c are hence unlikely to harbor an extended gas
envelope as they lie in a region of parameter space where high-altitude
cloud/haze formation is not expected to be significant for hydrogen-dominated
atmospheres. Many denser atmospheres remain consistent with the featureless
transmission spectrum---from a cloud-free water vapour atmosphere to a

Declining Rates in Male Circumcision amidst Increasing Evidence of its Public Health Benefit
BACKGROUND: Recent experimental evidence has demonstrated the benefits of male circumcision for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Studies have also shown that male circumcision is cost-effective and reduces the risk for certain ulcerative sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The epidemiology of male circumcision in the United States is poorly studied and most prior reports were limited by self-reported measures. The study objective was to describe male circumcision trends among men attending the San Francisco municipal STD clinic, and to correlate the findings with HIV, syphilis and sexual orientation. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A cross sectional study was performed by reviewing all electronic records of males attending the San Francisco municipal STD clinic between 1996 and 2005. The prevalence of circumcision over time and by subpopulation such as race/ethnicity and sexual orientation were measured. The findings were further correlated with the presence of syphilis and HIV infection. Circumcision status was determined by physical examination and disease status by clinical evaluation with laboratory confirmation. Among 58,598 male patients, 32,613 (55.7%, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 55.2-56.1) were circumcised. Male circumcision varied significantly by decade of birth (increasing between 1920 and 1950 and declining overall since the 1960's), race/ethnicity (Black: 62.2%, 95% CI 61.2-63.2, White: 60.0%, 95% CI 59.46-60.5, Asian Pacific Islander: 48.2%, 46.9-49.5 95% CI, and Hispanic: 42.2%, 95% CI 41.3-43.1), and sexual orientation (gay/bisexual: 73.0%, 95% CI 72.6-73.4; heterosexual: 66.0%, 65.5-66.5). Male circumcision may have been modestly protective against syphilis in HIV-uninfected heterosexual men (PR 0.92, 95% C.I. 0.83-1.02, P = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS: Male circumcision was common among men seeking STD services in San Francisco but has declined substantially in recent decades. Male circumcision rates differed by race/ethnicity and sexual orientation. Given recent studies suggesting the public health benefits of male circumcision, a reconsideration of national male circumcision policy is needed to respond to current trends

Improved Upper Limit on the Neutrino Mass from a Direct Kinematic Method by KATRIN.
We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic end point at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of (-1.0_{-1.1}^{+0.9}) eV^{2}. From this, we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90% confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of 2 and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation
The role of sexually transmitted infections in male circumcision effectiveness against HIV – insights from clinical trial simulation
BACKGROUND: A landmark randomised trial of male circumcision (MC) in Orange Farm, South Africa recently showed a large and significant reduction in risk of HIV infection, reporting MC effectiveness of 61% (95% CI: 34%–77%). Additionally, two further randomised trials of MC in Kisumu, Kenya and Rakai, Uganda were recently stopped early to report 53% and 48% effectiveness, respectively. Since MC may protect against both HIV and certain sexually transmitted infections (STI), which are themselves cofactors of HIV infection, an important question is the extent to which this estimated effectiveness against HIV is mediated by the protective effect of circumcision against STI. The answer lies in the trial data if the appropriate statistical analyses can be identified to estimate the separate efficacies against HIV and STI, which combine to determine overall effectiveness. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Focusing on the MC trial in Kisumu, we used a stochastic prevention trial simulator (1) to determine whether statistical analyses can validly estimate efficacy, (2) to determine whether MC efficacy against STI alone can produce large effectiveness against HIV and (3) to estimate the fraction of all HIV infections prevented that are attributable to efficacy against STI when both efficacies combine. RESULTS: Valid estimation of separate efficacies against HIV and STI as well as MC effectiveness is feasible with available STI and HIV trial data, under Kisumu trial conditions. Under our parameter assumptions, high overall effectiveness of MC against HIV was observed only with a high MC efficacy against HIV and was not possible on the basis of MC efficacy against STI alone. The fraction of all HIV infections prevented which were attributable to MC efficacy against STI was small, except when efficacy of MC specifically against HIV was very low. In the three MC trials which reported between 48% and 61% effectiveness (combining STI and HIV efficacies), the fraction of HIV infections prevented in circumcised males which were attributable to STI was unlikely to be more than 10% to 20%. CONCLUSION: Estimation of efficacy, attributable fraction and effectiveness leads to improved understanding of trial results, gives trial results greater external validity and is essential to determine the broader public health impact of circumcision to men and women
Can Molecular Motors Drive Distance Measurements in Injured Neurons?
Injury to nerve axons induces diverse responses in neuronal cell bodies, some of which are influenced by the distance from the site of injury. This suggests that neurons have the capacity to estimate the distance of the injury site from their cell body. Recent work has shown that the molecular motor dynein transports importin-mediated retrograde signaling complexes from axonal lesion sites to cell bodies, raising the question whether dynein-based mechanisms enable axonal distance estimations in injured neurons? We used computer simulations to examine mechanisms that may provide nerve cells with dynein-dependent distance assessment capabilities. A multiple-signals model was postulated based on the time delay between the arrival of two or more signals produced at the site of injury–a rapid signal carried by action potentials or similar mechanisms and slower signals carried by dynein. The time delay between the arrivals of these two types of signals should reflect the distance traversed, and simulations of this model show that it can indeed provide a basis for distance measurements in the context of nerve injuries. The analyses indicate that the suggested mechanism can allow nerve cells to discriminate between distances differing by 10% or more of their total axon length, and suggest that dynein-based retrograde signaling in neurons can be utilized for this purpose over different scales of nerves and organisms. Moreover, such a mechanism might also function in synapse to nucleus signaling in uninjured neurons. This could potentially allow a neuron to dynamically sense the relative lengths of its processes on an ongoing basis, enabling appropriate metabolic output from cell body to processes
Mice lacking the Cβ subunit of PKA are resistant to angiotensin II-induced cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>PKA is a ubiquitous, multi-subunit cellular kinase that regulates a number of different physiological responses in response to cAMP, including metabolism, cell division, and cardiac function. Numerous studies have implicated altered PKA signaling in cardiac dysfunction. Recently, it has been shown that mice lacking the catalytic β subunit of PKA (PKA Cβ) are protected from age-related problems such as weight gain and enlarged livers, and we hypothesized that these mice might also be resistant to cardiomyopathy.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Angiotensin II (ang II) induced hypertension in both PKA Cβ null mice and their WT littermates. However, PKA Cβ null mice were resistant to a number of ang II-induced, cardiopathological effects observed in the WT mice, including hypertrophy, decreased diastolic performance, and enlarged left atria.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The Cβ subunit of PKA plays an important role in angiotensin-induced cardiac dysfunction. The Cβ null mouse highlights the potential of the PKA Cβ subunit as a pharmaceutical target for hypertrophic cardiac disease.</p
Toxoplasma gondii Infection in the Brain Inhibits Neuronal Degeneration and Learning and Memory Impairments in a Murine Model of Alzheimer's Disease
Immunosuppression is a characteristic feature of Toxoplasma gondii-infected murine hosts. The present study aimed to determine the effect of the immunosuppression induced by T. gondii infection on the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Tg2576 AD mice. Mice were infected with a cyst-forming strain (ME49) of T. gondii, and levels of inflammatory mediators (IFN-γ and nitric oxide), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TGF-β), neuronal damage, and β-amyloid plaque deposition were examined in brain tissues and/or in BV-2 microglial cells. In addition, behavioral tests, including the water maze and Y-maze tests, were performed on T. gondii-infected and uninfected Tg2576 mice. Results revealed that whereas the level of IFN-γ was unchanged, the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines were significantly higher in T. gondii-infected mice than in uninfected mice, and in BV-2 cells treated with T. gondii lysate antigen. Furthermore, nitrite production from primary cultured brain microglial cells and BV-2 cells was reduced by the addition of T. gondii lysate antigen (TLA), and β-amyloid plaque deposition in the cortex and hippocampus of Tg2576 mouse brains was remarkably lower in T. gondii-infected AD mice than in uninfected controls. In addition, water maze and Y-maze test results revealed retarded cognitive capacities in uninfected mice as compared with infected mice. These findings demonstrate the favorable effects of the immunosuppression induced by T. gondii infection on the pathogenesis and progression of AD in Tg2576 mice
