Hepatitis B virus subgenotype C2 is the most prevalent subgenotype in northeast China
AbstractThe geographical distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) subgenotypes and their clinical implications in patients with acute and chronic hepatitis B in the Heilung-kiang province of northeast China were investigated. Nested PCR and multiplex PCR were performed with genotype-specific primers and with subgenotype-specific primers to identify genotypes and subgenotypes from serum samples of 412 HBV infections including 69 with acute self-limited hepatitis (ASH) and 343 with chronic hepatitis (CH). A total of 361 samples were genotyped and 304 were further subgenotyped. The most common HBV genotype was C (93.63%, 338/361), with subgenotype group C2 (83.73%, 283/338) predominating. Genotype B was also found and subgenotype B2 predominated within this genotype. Out of 69 infected patients with ASH, 48 were identified as genotype C and all belonged to subgenotype C2. Of 343 infected patients with CH, 313 were genotyped and 256 were subgenotyped; amongst these, C2 (91.80%, 235/256), B2 (7.42%, 19/256) and mixed subgenotypes B2 and C2 (0.78%, 2/256) were found. In HBV subgenotype C2 infections, ASH had a higher ratio of women than CH patients. These results show that HBV subgenotypes C2 and B2 were found in Heilung-kiang province of northeast China. In ASH and CH groups, the distributions of subgenotypes were coincident with C2, the predominant subgenotype. Analysis of the association between subgenotype and the outcomes of HBV infection was inconclusive in our study
Mesoscale magnetism at the grain boundaries in colossal magnetoresistive films
We report the discovery of mesoscale regions with distinctive magnetic
properties in epitaxial LaSrMnO films which exhibit
tunneling-like magnetoresistance across grain boundaries. By using
temperature-dependent magnetic force microscopy we observe that the mesoscale
regions are formed near the grain boundaries and have a different Curie
temperature (up to 20 K {\it higher}) than the grain interiors. Our images
provide direct evidence for previous speculations that the grain boundaries in
thin films are not magnetically and electronically sharp interfaces. The size
of the mesoscale regions varies with temperature and nature of the underlying

Non-Universal Power Law of the "Hall Scattering Rate" in a Single-Layer Cuprate Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6}
In-plane resistivity \rho_{ab}, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance (MR)
are measured in a series of high-quality Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6} crystals
with various carrier concentrations, from underdope to overdope. Our crystals
show the highest T_c (33 K) and the smallest residual resistivity ever reported
for Bi-2201 at optimum doping. It is found that the temperature dependence of
the Hall angle obeys a power law T^n with n systematically decreasing with
increasing doping, which questions the universality of the Fermi-liquid-like
T^2 dependence of the "Hall scattering rate". In particular, the Hall angle of
the optimally-doped sample changes as T^{1.7}, not as T^2, while \rho_{ab}
shows a good T-linear behavior. The systematics of the MR indicates an
increasing role of spin scattering in underdoped samples.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Improved Determination of the Mass of the Light Hybrid Meson From QCD Sum Rules
We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) -corrections to the
contributions of the condensates and in the
current-current correlator of the hybrid current
g\barq(x)\gamma_{\nu}iF_{\mu\nu}^aT^aq(x) using the external field method in
Feynman gauge. After incorporating these NLO contributions into the Laplace
sum-rules, the mass of the = light hybrid meson is recalculated
using the QCD sum rule approach. We find that the sum rules exhibit enhanced
stability when the NLO -corrections are included in the sum rule
analysis, resulting in a light hybrid meson mass of approximately 1.6

Observation of Two New N* Peaks in J/psi -> and Decays
The system in decays of is limited to be
isospin 1/2 by isospin conservation. This provides a big advantage in studying
compared with and experiments which mix
isospin 1/2 and 3/2 for the system. Using 58 million decays
collected with the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand
events are obtained. Besides two well known
peaks at 1500 MeV and 1670 MeV, there are two new, clear peaks in
the invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV and 2030 MeV. They are the
first direct observation of the peak and a long-sought "missing"
peak above 2 GeV in the invariant mass spectrum. A simple
Breit-Wigner fit gives the mass and width for the peak as MeV and MeV, and for the new peak above 2 GeV
as MeV and MeV, respectively
Ultrasonic evidence of an uncorrelated cluster formation temperature in manganites with first-order magnetic transition at T_C
Ultrasonic attenuation and phase velocity measurements have been carried out
in the ferromagnetic perovskites La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3 and
La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3. Data show that the transition at the Curie temperature,
T_C, changes from first- to second-order as Sr replaces Ca in the perovskite.
The compound with first-order transition shows also another transition at a
temperature T* > T_C. We interpret the temperature window T_C < T < T* as a
region of coexistence of a phase separated regime of metallic and insulating
regions, in the line of recent theoretical proposals.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Measurements of J/psi Decays into 2(pi+pi-)eta and 3(pi+pi-)eta
Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector,
the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are
measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and
(7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally
